The brightest thing about this movie is Sandra Bullock. I wish I could just walk up to her and yell at her for getting plastic surgery. She was a naturally pretty woman with a very likable personality (Remember Speed?) but then she decided to turn into Michael Jackson.
It's was pretty obvious too. She held out for a very loooooong time which I'm so grateful for. But I can't imagine the body dysmorphia that people living in LA must suffer from from being surrounded by all that plastic surgery.

Watched "Don't Look Up" with my kids and their spouses yesterday.
What an excellent flick. Satire to the nth degree on so many topics and stellar performances from Leonardo and Jennifer L who gave us yet another look and in my mind really hot. Jonah Hill doing his supporting role thing perfectly and Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett rocking their roles.
Strong recommend from et moi.
Cheers, Merry Christmas, Happy Boxing Day, etc etc.

A Quiet Place -2
Sequela are rarely good but this movie is an exception. f you liked part one, you will like this one as well. It starts with a short prequel to part one and then starts from where part one ended. Excellent edge of the seat action! There something very sexy about Emily Blunt. John Kasinski, her husband directed this one as well. I was surised that this likable young man Jim from The Office made it. The young girl playing the daughter is also fantastic .

3/5.

Finally I caught The Courier on Prime.
Totally spellbinding if you ask me. It is based on a true story about Cuban missile crisis during the cold war between the USA and the USSR. Very tense and it has great acting by Benedict Cumberbatch, the lead guy.
If you are into spy thrillers, you will like it.
3.5/5.

I recently got into renting movies again. I discovered Black Dog Video on commercial. They no longer own the cambie location. You can rent 5 catalogue movies for 15 bucks. (You need a credit card to sign up) They have a vast and insane collection of all sorts of movies. Criterion, eclectic slashers, cult movies, tons of documentaries and TV shows. Newer rentals are 6 bucks and only 3 nights.

I have been finding lots of rare and hard to find movies to watch from there. I could easily torrent and get them online or pay 5 bucks off youtube, but I like the nostalgic feeling of browsing in the store and supporting a local business. Nice owners and customer service too. People bring in old movies to trade in for credit so you can also buy movies for 5 bucks and they have several large sections of used DVDs.

I also use the local library to borrow stuff too. Streaming services are fine but eventually I get get caught up and bored and switch them up. Physical media is just something that for me will always be personal and nostalgic. also for example netflix removed the season 2 episode of community with the dark elf thing, and it's better just to have it physically.

The reviews said that movie is so-so, but I am going to watch it now. Thanks.

Saw #Alive on Netflix ( or was it Prime?) ... can't remember. It is ( yet another) Korean movie. Seems like they are becoming very popular. Basically a young guy gets stuck in his apartment alone when some kind of disease starts to turn everyone around him into zombies (Yea, another one of those movies). We all know how these stories go and how they end so ...

Nevertheless, I think Koreans are at least at par if not above their movie making, in terms of story telling as well as the technical stuff.
If you like zombie movies, it is not bad, but don't expect too much.

"Train to Busan" which came out in 2016 is the first Korean movie that I remember a lot of positve press about. I'm sure that there were other good movies that came of Korea before that, I just don't remember them. Coincidently, it was also a zombie movie. Afterward, both a prequel "Seoul Station" and a sequel "Peninsula" came out as well. And guess what? They are zombie movies as well lol.

Maybe Korean directors have decided to specialize in zombie movies?

Oldboy, Minari, and Parasite? Just to name a few.
Parasite alone won the Palme d'Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. Also the 2020 Academy Award awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film.

I highly suggest checking one, if not all of them out.

Ok, I know it’s not a movie, but I just had had HAD to watch Season 2 of the Witcher on Netflix. Loved loved LOVED the first episode! OMG, I totally LOL’d, and I’m not a big LOL-er. Second episode a bit meh, but it’s good to be back in the saddle 😀. Gonna pop a fuk-ton of popcorn and binge-out for a couple of days. IV drip, two-four of IPA, and shopvac at the ready.

The couch is my happy place.

I was just joking lol.

I have watched Parasite ( awful title - probably a short coming of the translation of Korean to English) and started on Minari. I just had a feeling it was going to end badly for the family so stopped watching, too much sadness already in my life. I may return some day and watch the rest.

I started Korean movies with Train To Busan as well and then Old Boy (later remade in Hollywood with Josh Brolin), Tunnel, Parasite, The Host and The Snowpiercer (with Hollywood cast) to name a few. I am going to watch Minari soon. I heard it’s good.

Finally saw Run on Netflix.

It is a suspense thriller and I think overall it is not really a bad movie. The most remarkable is the acting by both female leads.
Sarah Paulson has this madness in her looks and she uses it very well. Also it is very well directed and the tension is maintained throughout!
2.79 out of 5 for me.

Many Saints of Newark

The long anticipated prequel to the HBO Sopranos series is available now.

It’s 2 hours long and they tried to unpack a lot of Pre-history of the 6+ years of the series. For me it was a disappointing result making a disjointed film like this one. There is too much backstory required to make proper sense of the prequel they present. To my mind it should have at least 2 or 3 instalments to do a proper job of the long running series.

That's unfortunate, though despite your review, I can't not see it at some point soon.

Did the satire remind you in any way of Dr. Strangelove or The Death Of Stalin? I do enjoy satire so it's on my watch-one-day list, doubly so because of Jennifer Lawrence.

Don't look back is in the same vein as dr.Strangelove. well worth seeing.
Reviewed and caught up on movies on my TDL
Saw Apocalypse Now Redux...almost a full hour added on. I'd seen enough after 2 hours. The US military Industrial complex has missed the message even tho' it is plain as day year after year. Just brutal, especially having now travelled thru Vietnam from Hanoi to Saigon, and even talked to survivors. They are not bitter, which is testament to the overall goodness of the USA.
Reservoir Dogs. Crazy gory early Quentin Tarantino.
Girl with the Dragon Tatoo. Now this is a movie!!! The movie is European, and deals with old money rich people's dark family secrets. There is a lot in this movie for women to admire. I love how Rooney Mara's character extractis sweet revenge on a rapist and then so capablly works alongside Craig. Her character is about 20 yrs old and Daniel Craig looks >55, and she bangs him at least twice and maybe 3x. I enjoyed that aspect!

You should see the original European version titled Men Who Hate Women. It is much more gruesome than the Hollywood version, which was very good too.

I have that original trilogy on DVD. Got it as a gift years ago. I'm reluctant to see the Mara/Craig version as a result and end up comparing.

I was a fan like half the world reading the Stieg Larsson books and also watched the original trilogy which was a bit of a challenge with the subtitles but you just had to adjust to paying more attention. At one point reading the books, I was sure that all Swedes were in a constant grey rainy or winter season, drove new Volvos, used the latest Macs and had constant hot sex. The Euro films really were good but I have to say Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer and Rooney Mara in their version was really good as well. As an aside, the last book which was written by the guy who picked up Larsson's manuscripts after he died was so bad I can't recall the title nor if I finished it or not.

Just in the midst of watching Apocalypse Now Redux. Oddly enough. Was going to review it but you just did. I saw it in 1979 or whenever it came out and was knocked out. First Vietnam movie really. Francis Ford Cappola didn't miss the message. Brutal. If you want a glimpse at the insanity of the American invasion of Vietnam with all it's cynical glory. Very brilliant movie. IMHO. "Freedom ain't free" as vets in berets and T shirts brag. Robert Duval had a couple of one liners that are classics. "Charlie don't surf" " I love the smell of Napalm in the morning. Smells like victory" " I apologize Lance. The waves are getting blown out by the napalm."
Thankfully they fired Harvey Keitel as Captain Willard. Somebody found him as unlikeable as truly deserved. And cast Martin Sheen. Which made his cred.

I have both the Swedish and the Craig/Rooney version. They did an excellent job on the English version. Stellar supporting cast too.

I have yet to do the complete set of three movies over a weekend. I’m waiting to get totally snowed in before that happens.
