I love good movies In the past I started two threads about movies and seems like they have been inactive for a while. So here is the third one.

I usually go thru ‘Top Movies of .....” at Rotten Tomatoes and pick my movies. Here’s two of them:


The Invisible Man: A very creepy thriller based on H G Wells story. I think another movie was made based on it. This one has an element of horror but its more of a scary suspense thriller. I am not a horror movie guy at all but this one felt different. Great performance by the lead actress Elisabeth Moss. Strongly recommended.

Promising Young Woman: Another good suspense revenge thriller. Great acting by Carey Mulligan, the lead girl. There is this eerie sexiness to her. I remember her in Shame as well. Great direction as well.
Lots of ‘Gotcha’ moments.
Strongly Recommended.

I used to love to go to the movies but with the pandemic I haven't been in over a year. I used to use the same criteria as you do I.e. reviews from Rotten Tomatoes but sadly I'm not even sure what movies are playingin theatres now. Maybe next year.

Because of COVID 19 I don't watch in the theatres either. I should have mentioned that, sorry. I watch them on that little box, IPTV, I believe. I am not sure if any of you guys have it. They have loads and loads of movies, shows, sports and TV channels.

Got the box and my iptv guy set me up with a 'subscription' a couple years back. The subscription is to buy his support and also from his server the Linux box updates pretty much daily.
Holy Crap. If you are looking for a tv series that was streamed at some time, or a movie, chances are its there.
Couple this with Netflix, Amazon, Britbox, free channels, regular tv, hell if you are into being served entertainment to your personal viewing setup, you just need to leave the house to get supplies and to poon.

That's one thing about these streaming services that are starving for content......there is no end to the crap films. The Invisible Man was good, and I'm really a fan of Elizabeth Moss's acting, ever since she was in Mad Men. I was looking at Promising Young Women, I'll have to check it out for sure now.. I would have to say the last time I walked away from a film feeling like I just didn't waste 2 hours of my life was Lost in Translation....and that was in 2003!!

I have downloaded the first but have not watched it yet. The 2nd movie I also downloaded and have watched. I liked it but the computer programmer in me thinks she left a little too much to chance at the end. I will leave it at that. The main actor was nominated for a Golden Globe I believe.

Over the space of some months I have watched 2 Guy Ritchie films that both have a huge number of recognizeable actors, take place in the UK and have a gangster element to them. He seems to like making these kinds of movies. The 2 movies I am referring to are "The Gentlemen" and "RocknRolla". Two other movies mined from the same vein by Guy Ritchie are "Snatch" and "Lock, Stock and Two Barrels". If you have watched any of these movies and liked them, you will likely like the others.

You Were Never Really Here:

Watched it recently on IPTV. It came out two three years ago.

It is a crime thriller based on a book. It was very well received at Cannes. What sets it apart is the acting AND the direction. Clearly Lynne Ramsay, the director knows exactly what she is doing and she did it very well. Joaquin Phoenix did a great job. It doesn't have many dialogues and the ones that are there are mostly mumbled. But it is the scenes, the grim tone, graphic images and the music that tells the story. Surprisingly though, many of the graphic details are, thankfully, not even shown except for the aftermath. Very smartly directed.

Last movie starring Joaquin Phoenix I watched was Joker and I was totally drawn into it. Same with this one. It is amazing what a good actor can do to portray the character.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Repeat: No. Recommend: Yes, if you like what I wrote above.

Changing gears here, the last in theater movie I saw (and was it that long ago now?) was Knives Out. I had not been that thoroughly entertained in such a feel good fun way by a movie for a long time. Had no idea Daniel Craig had such wonderful comedic timing.

I am more a fan of the movies made in the sixties from my childhood. The good guys were good and bad were bad. Simplistic I know. All the war classics (Battle of the Bulge, etc.). I am not as keen on the newer movies so honestly haven't missed the theatres much.

I am a total cinephile with a dvd/BD collection of 600+ movies, the thing is I bet 1/3 of my collection will have your avg viewer ask why the hell that pos is in my library!
Seeing the OP reviews/watches films based off of top RT ratings, I'm not gonna bother posting my B-Movie reviews, lol!

Ex: just watched The New Kids (1985) starring James Spader and Lori Loughlin. Hahaha

Finally got to watch Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

If you have not seen it, you might digest it if you are a Quentin Tarantino fan. It is quirky, sometimes outrageous and it runs many parallel stories together. If nothing else, it certainly takes you to 50's and 60's. The climax is again, quirky and graphic, which is typical of QT. An hour or so in, I knew that QT is just walking us through an era and that's about it. That kinda kept me interested.

I enjoyed parts of it a lot but as a whole, I don't think I found it as great as it was reviewed as. But good performances and what kept me in was the women in it. I love that old time hippy look in girls. Woman with armpit hair! ohhh sexy.

Repeat: No. Recommend: Yea, I guess.

If you have not seen it, you might digest it if you are a Quentin Tarantino fan. It is quirky, sometimes outrageous and it runs many parallel stories together. If nothing else, it certainly takes you to 50's and 60's. The climax is again, quirky and graphic, which is typical of QT. An hour or so in, I knew that QT is just walking us through an era and that's about it. That kinda kept me interested.

I enjoyed parts of it a lot but as a whole, I don't think I found it as great as it was reviewed as. But good performances and what kept me in was the women in it. I love that old time hippy look in girls. Woman with armpit hair! ohhh sexy.

Repeat: No. Recommend: Yea, I guess.

I watched the English Patient on cable recently. I went to see it in the theatre when it first came out and fell asleep during it. Managed to watch it all this time. It was kind of slow paced and didn’t care much for the way the story was told with flashbacks.

lol @ fell asleep. I remember only watching it a bit and realizing that it just wasn’t for me. Too sentimental!

Fair assessment, but as a Tarantino fan with a fascination of the 60s, I loved it start to finish. The beautiful women, cars, set dec etc were all just icing on the cake for me. Brad Pitt‘s character’s pit bull was an additional bonus.
