Most people will survive this virus just fine. Only the elderly and immune suppressed need worry. We have shut down the planet for less than one percent of the populations safety.
Putting aside your ambivalence towards communities you don't belong to, I'd just like to point out that if our healthcare system collapses under the strain of handling such a massive number of cases in a small timeframe then it's going to be a lot more than just elderly people and immunocompromised people that are at risk. I hope everyone's keeping receipts on everyone that's tried to downplay this.

that is the absolute truth. i’m directly related to an ER nurse in FHA and another nurse and doctor in VGH ICU. the nativity in BC is extremely concerning as this is exactly what Spain thought two weeks ago. “ya we good”. NO THEY AREN’T

I will be refraining for a LONG time.
It's all numbers. This started with just a very few cases and look where it is now in this short time. I doubt the virus will be 100% erradicated, so al long as it exists out there, it can surface and spread again.
At this point the Experts do not know if we are immune if we fight it off the first time. If we do become immune that will help, but based on the numbers they projected, 70% will become infected. That still leaves 30% who could catch it at a later date.
Even if there is a vaccine, will those 30% get vaccinated? If the answer is NO, then it will still be out there.
Am I an pessimist, NO. But I like numbers.
Very similar to the HIV issue. Currently there are drugs out there that will hinder it's passing between people. But because of this, many think it is "cured", yet it is making a resurgence again.

Also, on today's updates, younger and younger people are ending up hospitalized with this virus.
Then toss in the talk that it may have already mutated.
I would like things to get better, but as long as I keep seeing people congregating out there, it's going to keep spreading. Just watching my neighbours and how many kids are having "play dates", many people are not taking this seriously.
Saw one guy, who thought he was doing the right thing, as he was wearing gloves while shopping. What did he do? Pulled his phone out of his pocket with gloves one, hit the screen a few times with gloved fingers, then proceeded to put it up to his face for a phone call. Then back into his pocket once done. He just doesn't get how the gloves are supposed to work, he might as well had bare hands.

And people who live in places with elevators. I would not trust those buttons at all.

Then our healthcare system. I am not blaming them, but prior to this, people in need of assistance were not getting it in hospitals nor clinics as they were packed already. Now toss in more and more people who are infected, and things get ugly very quick.

Apparently there are currently 8 different strains in the world, as it mutates.

So far, the mutations are benign, but are helpful for tracking, but who knows...

It truly is amazing how quickly the sheep have folded to the new mentality of let’s let the gov’t dictate everything we do - in the sake of world safety. It’s World War 2 measures all over again, especially when you compare it to Russia and most of the eastern block countries towards the end. Then there’s the guys on here preaching how they’re not going to see anyone ever just because they’re posting now - like fuck right off, like saying you’ll never eat another Fuji apple because the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941.

And not a single bomb was dropped.

I’m all for washing hands and keeping a safe distance and using sanitizer - I think most people are fucking gross, but you’d be blind to not see how quickly we’ve devolved to a fascist state, without anyone being none the wiser. We are getting duped, because rest assured - the rich are only getting wealthier because of this.

So - do your part - but enough with the shaming. It’s hypocritical and pathetic.

I used to feel that way about Japanese motorcycles, but then I bought one anyway.

We don't have any idea yet how this will play out. China is claiming that they're through the worst, but I don't trust them. If we see Italy or France cap out that will give us an idea.

Trump has backed away from his Easter promise. He's now saying end of April at the earliest.

This will only end when we have herd immunity (I believe 60% of the population exposed) or there is a vaccine. This is based on exposure to the virus creating immunity to subsequent reinfection.

There had been hope that the virus would slow down in warmer months, but warmer countries don't seem to be having any slower spread.

All of our social distancing makes it less likely for the vulnerable to contract the virus, but it also extends the time that it would take for herd immunity to be developed. A vaccine is unlikely to be released until January.

I think Justin Trudeau is doing his best to spend as much money as possible to keep things rolling. I think he will keep spending to ensure that there's cash around for people to spend once social distancing ends. So there should then be a surge of pent-up activity on all fronts. But a much larger government debt to pay off.

Personally I've been holding off on massages because I've been sick (not with COVID). I do know an Asian woman who has always used a mask for her sessions so I might see her once I get well. Otherwise I've been socking away cash to my pooning budget. So I'll probably splurge once we come out of this.

I hope we re-consider doing business with China. We've all turned a blind eye to their human rights record and open desire to build an empire. We got cheap products, but here's one way that we're paying for it.

A very logical post. I agree with most of your points raisinbran.

This social distancing will certainly delay arriving at herd immunity levels of the virus in Canadian society. China supposedly scucceeded, not in reaching herd immunity (only approx 0.005 of 1% of Chinese people are now immune, if we are to believe the Chinese statistics), but in isolatiing the virus to such a degree that the spread is now very slow. I assume this is what Canada is trying to do also.

Clearly China's long term plan is the creation of a vaccine and then having enough of their citizens take said vaccine to reach herd immunity in that manner. I am just fearfull that in Canada we will be forced to have social distancing and the continued shutdown of many business for a very long time if we do succeed in flattening the curve but not eliminating new cases sufficiently to try to return to some kind of normal as they are supposedly now doing in Wuhan province in China.

The things that will come out is how vulnerable our society is.
The best answear to spread is confinement, which gives valuable time to set up and prepare for more cases.

One of the problems was at the beginning was the testing for the virus. When people start coming into the hospital with flu symptoms and its greater than average, they should be testing the patients, not within the week, within a day. Most countries are not set up for that, most hospitals can test (or have a contracter that does), but that is limited in quantity. The hospitals are not set up for emergency operations of great numbers. There is no overflow place to put the patients that can handle hundreds, let alone thousands (and put them on ventilators). Let alone setting that up before hand (you know be prepared..) too much money. Cost.... Economy.... Best value for you taxdollars.....
But the big thing will be the testing. More advance places in every city for testing... With a place for overflow testing, and people that are trained to help out. Shipping out overnight to Toronto will not do, if the airlines are shut down.

Well I am sure the authorities have plans to use the arenas, or soccer fields to put up tents for make-shift hospitals... You know someone has those tents on a shelf somewhere.... Just like there are lots of ventilators in Canada's inventory.... if there are more than 10,000 I will be surprized..... (sarcasm-- the thing I know about government.. they aren't great planners for the future). You see some dickhead economist decided that it cost too much money to store shit in Canada; and to save money started to close all the "unneccessary places" that needed heat in the winter.... Money saving....." I saved you money" , "see how great I am".... fucktards....Please do not ask how fucked up the government supply system is....

What I can see is every major city holding a stockpile of necessary medical (to do 20% of their population). A specific place to house thousands (3 or 4) in the immediate area of major cities (A hospital thats kept in reserve). this would have a airlock system for clean and dirty/contaminated areas... The problem is money and stock shelf life of things.

For Food.... You might see the bigger push towards local growing for fresh food. (Like that Montreal store growing fresh produce on its roof). More green house space in cities. Planned neighbourhoods having a green house.... So if your fav coffee bean comes from Brazil, and you can't get it... grow it. Apartment buildings should require roof top plots. Apartments to have a standard pantry for dry goods... etc.

I can see a new plan for cruise ships. Ports they expected to go into, refused them. If they want the cruise ships in, ports will have to provide for boats that have sick people. (maybe for 4 or 5 boats in number)..

So people and governments have to shift their thinking. (most think about money/cost savings and how to get relected)

An epidemic could wipe out the human race, but humans are smart enough to avoid this, if they make sacrifices...

When it's over, it may change the way we travel, take vacations, cruises.
Taxes will have to go up to pay for all this.
Changes in how we interact with each other in public.
Working from home may become more common for some professions.

All I can say is I am glad I considered an essential service and I am still working and making money.I have a decent amount of savings and my home is paid off several years back.

That being said a lot of people are going to have to take a bite out of a big shit sandwich.I see a lot of small business's folding and a lot of personal bankruptsies in the future given that before this 68% of Canadians were within $200 a month of being flat broke and being leveraged to the nuts with owing $1.78 per dollar they earned when they were working.

The public sector of course for the most part will be just fine.I have no problem with fire/police/EMS/doctors nurses etc getting by this unscathed but I take serious umbrage and discontent that pencil pushing bureaucrats whos biggest activity each day is how to figure out how to fuck the dog get a safe cushy pass on this harsh situation.

It doesn't matter much even if you are not on the verge of bankruptcy, still, a slowdown in the economy will affect you in one way or the other, worse is if you are older and catch the virus and say goodbye to this world:)
