Putting aside your ambivalence towards communities you don't belong to, I'd just like to point out that if our healthcare system collapses under the strain of handling such a massive number of cases in a small timeframe then it's going to be a lot more than just elderly people and immunocompromised people that are at risk. I hope everyone's keeping receipts on everyone that's tried to downplay this.

It's all numbers. This started with just a very few cases and look where it is now in this short time. I doubt the virus will be 100% erradicated, so al long as it exists out there, it can surface and spread again.
At this point the Experts do not know if we are immune if we fight it off the first time. If we do become immune that will help, but based on the numbers they projected, 70% will become infected. That still leaves 30% who could catch it at a later date.
Even if there is a vaccine, will those 30% get vaccinated? If the answer is NO, then it will still be out there.
Am I an pessimist, NO. But I like numbers.
Very similar to the HIV issue. Currently there are drugs out there that will hinder it's passing between people. But because of this, many think it is "cured", yet it is making a resurgence again.
Also, on today's updates, younger and younger people are ending up hospitalized with this virus.
Then toss in the talk that it may have already mutated.
I would like things to get better, but as long as I keep seeing people congregating out there, it's going to keep spreading. Just watching my neighbours and how many kids are having "play dates", many people are not taking this seriously.
Saw one guy, who thought he was doing the right thing, as he was wearing gloves while shopping. What did he do? Pulled his phone out of his pocket with gloves one, hit the screen a few times with gloved fingers, then proceeded to put it up to his face for a phone call. Then back into his pocket once done. He just doesn't get how the gloves are supposed to work, he might as well had bare hands.
And people who live in places with elevators. I would not trust those buttons at all.

We don't have any idea yet how this will play out. China is claiming that they're through the worst, but I don't trust them. If we see Italy or France cap out that will give us an idea.

This social distancing will certainly delay arriving at herd immunity levels of the virus in Canadian society. China supposedly scucceeded, not in reaching herd immunity (only approx 0.005 of 1% of Chinese people are now immune, if we are to believe the Chinese statistics), but in isolatiing the virus to such a degree that the spread is now very slow. I assume this is what Canada is trying to do also.
Clearly China's long term plan is the creation of a vaccine and then having enough of their citizens take said vaccine to reach herd immunity in that manner. I am just fearfull that in Canada we will be forced to have social distancing and the continued shutdown of many business for a very long time if we do succeed in flattening the curve but not eliminating new cases sufficiently to try to return to some kind of normal as they are supposedly now doing in Wuhan province in China.

The best answear to spread is confinement, which gives valuable time to set up and prepare for more cases.
One of the problems was at the beginning was the testing for the virus. When people start coming into the hospital with flu symptoms and its greater than average, they should be testing the patients,not within the week, within a day. Most countries are not set up for that, most hospitals can test (or have a contracter that does), but that is limited in quantity. The hospitals are not set up for emergency operations of great numbers. There is no overflow place to put the patients that can handle hundreds, let alone thousands (and put them on ventilators). Let alone setting that up before hand (you know be prepared..) too much money. Cost.... Economy.... Best value for you taxdollars.....
But the big thing will be the testing. More advance places in every city for testing... With a place for overflow testing, and people that are trained to help out. Shipping out overnight to Toronto will not do, if the airlines are shut down.
Well I am sure the authorities have plans to use the arenas, or soccer fields to put up tents for make-shift hospitals... You know someone has those tents on a shelf somewhere.... Just like there are lots of ventilators in Canada's inventory.... if there are more than 10,000 I will be surprized..... (sarcasm-- the thing I know about government.. they aren't great planners for the future). You see some dickhead economist decided that it cost too much money to store shit in Canada; and to save money started to close all the "unneccessary places" that needed heat in the winter.... What I can see is every major city holding a stockpile of necessary medical (to do 20% of their population). A specific place to house thousands (3 or 4) in the immediate area of major cities (A hospital thats kept in reserve). this would have a airlock system for clean and dirty/contaminated areas... The problem is money and stock shelf life of things.
For Food.... You might see the bigger push towards local growing for fresh food. (Like that Montreal store growing fresh produce on its roof). More green house space in cities. Planned neighbourhoods having a green house.... So if your fav coffee bean comes from Brazil, and you can't get it... grow it. Apartment buildings should require roof top plots. Apartments to have a standard pantry for dry goods... etc.
I can see a new plan for cruise ships. Ports they expected to go into, refused them. If they want the cruise ships in, ports will have to provide for boats that have sick people. (maybe for 4 or 5 boats in number)..
So people and governments have to shift their thinking. (most think about money/cost savings and how to get relected)

All I can say is I am glad I considered an essential service and I am still working and making money.I have a decent amount of savings and my home is paid off several years back.

It doesn't matter much even if you are not on the verge of bankruptcy, still, a slowdown in the economy will affect you in one way or the other, worse is if you are older and catch the virus and say goodbye to this world
