As for calling Americans morons—well, maybe some deserve it. But let’s not forget, even in the True North, there are some questionable choices. After all, someone had to vote Trudeau into office
And Harper before him, which was even worse. People said they would choose "anyone" who could bring down Harper and "anyone" was what they got.
Everyone with half a brain knows that campaigns are "silly season", that what is done and said in those times is ridiculous, so it is supposed to be that what leaders & parties are actually about it what goes on between campaigns.
One thing about the US political scene is that they invented the "permanent campaign". Always use the scripted talking points and never speak for yourself because the partisan media conglomerates are massive; always be fundraising because US politics is completely corrupt and driven by money, so they even go as far as crafting legislation solely for the purpose of attracting donors. Fight the "culture war" forever because conflict motivates both media attention and fundraising drives. Etc. Etc. Policy is all driven by the need to invent new ways to throw shots at each other; consistency in your ideology does not matter compared to scoring partisan points, so hypocrisy skyrockets. Forget about logic, reason, or having to actually get on with life after election day - there is no getting on with life, only the eternal campaign!
Frankly, it is a disgusting innovation, that has made the US an increasingly absurd & terrible place, but that has also not stopped the US from exporting its political strategies to other nations, and political leaders in those nations being stupid enough to accept it.
Canada being right next door is one of those places that have caught "the blight". The conservative party has been all about emulating & sucking up to the GOP since the Reagan era, but the Libs and NDP have also adopted some of the language and activism that comes from US corporate & "progressive" circles, and even hired some of the slick political operators that the Dems have surplus of.
And that in turn has led to the "permanent campaign" plague coming here and so our political culture mutates into something inferior, thanks to those ignorant fools trying to jam those square "presidential republic" pegs into round "parliamentary monarchy" holes.
