This is nothing new. Many countries host foreign military for training, on both sides.
Also if you read the article this was set up and approved by our former moronic leadership; i.e. Stephen Harper.

Both federal parties have treated the military as an after thought in terms of planning and the way they have treated our veterans. None of them have the right to shame the other side as the have acted shamelessly on both counts . And that has been going on for decades ...so the mud/manure is on both sides.

in the bizzaro world we live in it only make sense that we teach them how to protect the for profit natural resources that we (Canada collectively) have given to them

Not really. Canada is stuck between 2 superpowers. The declining US superpower and the up and coming China superpower. Or should I say economic declining American power compared with the rising economy of China.
As I look at America's economic power, it is declining. Fracking for oil. Bad environmental record. To make profits the American companies went to the Far East, to hong Kong, Twaiwan and China (that iphone you use is made in China). America hasn't yet depleted its natural resources.
China has the elements for high technology equipment (rare earth elements).

In Canada we don't have any heavy industry compared to America, Britian and the rest of the world. (think gobalism)

China will be hungry for resources, and the far north of Canada will be its target. And the far north is a miserable place.

The military in Canada is controlled by the civilian authorities. Which is the Minister of National Defence. Since the early 70s military spending has been cut to the CAF, basicly making them boy scouts with no equipment. The equipment we do have is aging and most major pieces of equipment are over 20 years old.

Although I hate to say it, Canada military's equipment is sadly lacking. If you don't have the equipment, you can't survive out in the cold. Let alone fight in it. If Trudeau wants to invite China to watch our soldiers floundering in the snow, then so be it.

Sun Tzu, the Art of War- get to know your enemy by becoming your enemies friend... ( or there abouts). So if you think they are spying on us, we are spying on them too probally. Then we share our infomation too... with our friends.

The reality is who ever leaked the memo/letters, should not of done that. Unless it was meant to be released....

Canada doesn't have the resources to secure our North.
It would take a dozen ships and many aircraft and thousands of personnel to monitor such a vast area.
Who wants to pay taxes to buy that equipment?

Since the training agreement was signed in 2013 by the Harper/O'Toole regime, I agree with you.

Thank God we booted the morons out.
Otool is such a fucking hypocrite.
He bitches about China all the time but was happy to suck Harper's dick when Harper sold Canada out to China for 35 years.

The good thing about the north is that we have a very protective neighbour. We are part of Norad.
The thing is the far north is not that mapped out for minerals.
The Canadian Shield holds lots of mineral wealth and northern Ontario is barely tapped for that. It probally has alot hydro potential if the electricity could make it south to Toronto.
The problem is acess and finding the minerals.

The funny thing is that in the 50s and 60s the governments made big projects to access certain types of natural resources, now it relies on private exploration.

Russia is trying to claim parts of the Arctic ocean we consider ours.
Russia thinks there may be undersea oil.
Under Putin they are aggressively expansionist. They invaded Ukraine and are pressuring Latvia Lithuania and Estonia.

There has been a lot of Anti-American sentiment over the years and its getting worse.
They are our only physical neighbor on the south and the north(Alaska).
Would you rather that Russia still owned Alaska?
One former Russian I was speaking with was actually concerned that Russia and USA could squeeze out Canada and take it over very easily.
At first I scoffed at his suggestion but now I think he has very valid point.

Think about it ,the USA is our biggest protector, do you think we have the capability to defend our country if we were attacked by any another country?
We have very little military experience compared to the USA and Russia. Plus we are dwarfed .
If this did come about(Russia and USA deciding to takeover Canada by force)-who would come to our aid? United Nations?
Do you think England and the queen would sent troops? The European Union?
There would be lots of public speeches expressing outrage but that's as far at it would go.
Older siblings can relate to always looking out for the younger siblings even when the younger ones are completely oblivious and no help whatsoever.
A parable for describing the USA/Canada relationship.
