Like everything you have to realize that science has solved some of these ancient technologies; it just that people use certain things for hype or just too lazy to go and see if there is more recent information out there.
For the Antikythera mechanism: Due to the increase in x-ray technology in the last 30 years, the rusted/corroded mechanism was revealed.

This series is how a person made tools from the area of when the Antikythera mechanism was made. I found these videos interesting on how the tools were made. Mind you they are using easily available information from today to make those tools. In Ancient times this knowledge was not shared widely.
The main reason that people are immpressed with the Antikythera mechanism is because it has gears (made in ancient Greece), Centuries before the historians thought they made metal gears and gearing. The reason they found this mechanism was that it was discovered on a mediterrean wrekage that sunk around 65BC (Found by the island of Antikythera and hence the name of the object). Likely reason why no other mechanism were found, was that the mechanism was made of metal, so if it broke, it was melted down and used for its metal....
Lost knowledge like this usually belonged to the temples. Also ancient libraires that were burnt down, like the Library of Alexandria (Christians burning Pagan knowledge).
