To start out I will say that Costco ROCKS.It really does with regards to a lot of stuff.Get some bagels and they are half the price and it is even cheaper for bread.Bring on the meat and it is a no brainer to buy a whole striploin and carve your own steaks and it gets better if you like the premo cut of the tenderloin.

That being said there are a few things at Costco NOT to buy if you are a single guy or even if you have a family.

#1 is that huge jug of maple syrup....unless you make pancakes 7 days a week for 2 years you will not consume it.....most likely you will die and leave the remainder to somebody in your will.

#2 is soy sauce....it comes in a 1 litre plastic bottle....and unless you own an Asian restaurant you wont use it.....it sits there on the shelf or in the condiment compartment in the door until you sadly discover it when you want to use it only to find out it is 6 months past it's expiration date.

And lastly is that BIG 2 kilogram jar of peanut butter......that is a LOT of peanut butter. If you have kids and you send them off to school each day and make peanut butter cookies on a weekly basis it makes sense.....if not well you paid for a massive jar of peanut butter that will go bad over the course of time.

The roasted chickens are one of their best deals $7.99 and they easily weigh a pound more than at any other store, locally supplied by Sunrise Poultry in Surrey. Recently they have had whole garlic chicken legs complete thigh with drumstick 5 per pack for 10 bucks, when these things come hot out of the oven they are awesome. Their in-house fresh cooked French fries are better than any fast food outlet around and the huge tub of potato salad for 5 bucks. I always grab a couple chickens you can tear them down freeze them for later great for wraps and the boney parts for soups.
That maple syrup can be used for cooking, mixing drink recipes not just for pancakes.
I was recently in the new Costco in Bellingham and they have huge pork rib racks popping out of their ovens but sadly no fries that’s a Canadian perk! I am making myself hungry again.

I have to laugh at this.
pancake syrup (not maple), soy sauce and p butter
I buy two of these fairly regularly and the other is on my next list.

I agree about their roasted chickens, but my favourite thing? The Hebrew National kosher hotdogs...

Costco is all right if you like bulk......I'm no longer a member.
I frequent grocery stores that have multiple sizes of what I prefer to buy......as a single man I cannot consume two gallons of anything before its expiry date.
My grocery bill is a minimum of 500 , as my location is 140 or so Klms from town......my Costco bill would exceed 800, and I'm not a food waster if I can help it.
I also found it very interesting to watch when Costco appeared on the Canadian scene.....they thought that they could use ALL American suppliers, and thought they were so big they could push around the Canadian government .....when they were told they had to use a minimum amount of Canadian produce to sell in their stores, their answer was "no, we have our established supply chain in the U.S."
They were promptly told to "F" off.....and had to comply with the Government.....and found the quality, and supply management very efficient to work with.

About the only item I really liked was their MAG flashlights and they quit stocking them about 5 years ago.

Bigger isn't always better

Yeah I pretty much use the Costco gas bar exclusively for fueling my vehicle unless I'm on a road trip and there isn't an outlet accessible. But I have the same issue with the "warehouse" size of a lot of products as a single guy. It's just not feasible to buy a 24 count bag of crusty dinner rolls even putting them in the freezer they will get stale before I can finish them. Wal-Mart is better in that regard for me as you can just buy three or four buns or rolls at a time from their bins.

I enjoy browsing around Costco once in a while for various gadgets and clothing too. Prices and quality are always good. I do buy some food items that will keep in the cupboard for a couple of months such as a box of energy bars or plastic container of mixed nuts.

Buylist: Que Pasa, Coffee beans, Frozen mixed berries, Eggs, craisins, Peanuts, Clif Bars, Apple Juice 12x1l, macadamia, TP, and jeans. Generally they are conscientious about keeping the ingredients healthy. The BBQ chickens are to die for. The hard part is resisting all the impulse buys as you circulate.

I hope one day there are wholesale pooning stores.

Imagine a Costco like that.

You buy membership and get three for price of one. Or something like that.
Every aisle with a sampling booth. Lovely ladies standing there saying things like ....
"Would you like to suck on this nipple? The main product is $220.hr in aisle 69"

"Good Morning, we are offering quick licks of DATY. You can get the full product right beside aisle 69."

"Would you like a 10 second BBBJ? The full product is on sale for 150/shot."

I bet most of the guys would line up just to sample nipple sucking, p**y tasting, bbbjing.......... and of course there would be a big tub with paper towels beside it with a sign saying, "Please do not litter, empty your load in this tub."

What exactly is the appeal of the Costco gas bar?
The lineups are out of proportion to the so-called "savings". Pricing looks minimally less. 2 cents/litre? So savings for an average car is about a buck?
I find that Safeway has the best gas prices consistently- and with the grocery savings coupon of 15 cents/litre discount they can't be beat! That's about $20/tank for my truck, and I'm filling up weekly. And the discount is regardless of pump price- based strictly on volume.

Gassed up today at Costco and the savings was three cents a liter so about a dollar. Probably force of habit more than anything. That's just my routine. Just avoid it on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon which is easy for me given my schedule.

I think it is more psychological than anything else. One of my vehicles takes over 70 litres. When I fill it up at Costco, I take an empty can (for the other car) that can take about 25 l's. So usually I get about 70-70 litres and the savings only come to about 2 bucks. In the grand scheme of thing I save maximum of 50-57 dollars a year. But I never make a trip to Costco just to get gas. Usually I time it with rest of grocery shopping.

Wine kits are a good deal. The Merlot kit is $70 and will make 46 liters of good wine. That works out to a little over $1.50 a liter.

Or 8 litres of 100 proof after running through a still, with a cold water bath washing over the copper coil.....ummmmm or so I've heard.
