Shaw Mobile Plan

Shaw's Freedom is just the old Wind Mobile. I was with Wind a few years ago. Signal quality was very unreliable because Freedom's frequency (band) cannot easily penetrate thick concrete. I went back to Rogers after a few months.

Assuming you can accept Freedom's reliabiity, you still need to subscribe to Shaw's exorbitant Internet plans (posted rates) to get this "free" service. You can get home Internet for much cheaper than Shaw. I got tired of calling Shaw's loyalty dept every once in a while to beg for a lower rate. I have since moved on to a 3rd party reseller and have never thought of going back to Shaw or Telus. With Can Com, I pay $50/month for 100mbps down and 7mbps up; no contract; no quotas.

For cell phone, I have been with Public Mobile for more than 2 years and love it. Public Mobile runs on the Telus network so coverage is excellent. I'm on the cheapest plan at $15/month but have gotten my bill down to $5/month with loyalty/auto pay/referral rewards. In Nov, I'll be at 3 years of loyalty, so my monthly charge will drop by another $1 to $4/month.

Public Mobile plans are great for those who do not need much data. Or for those who have a large social network (SPs ?) to use referral rewards to get their monthly charge lowered substantially. I have heard that some people pay $0/month even on the larger plans.

Checked out public mobile deals, not bad at all. What's reception like as you leave metro Vancouver?

Yes, that is a fact that I learned afterwards. But so far we have not traveled out of the lower mainland so I can't comment on that. But then I am the only one who has switched to Shaw. rest of the family is still with one of the big 3. So we always have a backup just in case my signal drops.

But that is a good information to have.
I'm also potentially considering this since I already have Shaw internet, that $45 for 25 gig deal is enticing. But looking at coverage across the country with Shaw (Freedom) is not comparable to the big 3 yet. I travel the country a lot so it may not work well for me.

I switched couple of months ago and so far I have not had any issues. But then I have not travelled east of Chilliwack ever since so I guess I can not really comment on their coverage out of Great Vancouver and or Fraser Valley area.
For me the main lure was 25 GB. In fact, it is unlimited except that 25 GBs are at fast speed and (according to a friend of mine) the speed apparently drop considerably.

Apparently you can try it almost for free if you are a shaw customer .

Take a somewhat current phone to shaw and they can give you a sim card for $20 .
If you are not happy with the reception , i think you can return the sim within 15 days and get your money back .

I think i will try this and keep it as a backup phone on the $0 plan .

Interesting, I'll need to find a suitable backup phone. Maybe it's time to upgrade my 4 yr old S7...

We have had and continue to have as close to a monopoly as possible regarding telecom service. The CRTC never worked for the general population, always for the industry thus the high rates we have and more than likely will always have. I expect the profits of the big 3 will get a nice bump once 5G kicks in and folks don't realize just how much data they are consuming in a very short time. Its a bummer but we're stuck with what we have.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
