Has anyone looked into it?

Basically if you have Shaw internet, you get 6 cell phone lines free. Basically calling and texting is free.

You pay for the data though. Which is much cheaper than what I am paying right now with Rogers.

Has anyone switched yet? Is there signal good?

What phones does it work with?

I think the basic plan is $10/gb and it rolls over till 90 days.
The one I am interested in is $45/25 GB per month. That is huge.
Then there is another one which is more expensive.

What I kind of don't like a bit is that it is 25 GB within BC and Alberta. For rest of Canada it is 2 GB. Which is not too bad considering I rarely travel frequently.

I asked them the provider, but they wouldn't tell. But it has to be Bell or Rogers anyway. Someone said it is Freedom Mobile that Shaw has taken over.

I am ready to go for it but I just want to hear it from someone who is already using it. I want to know their range doesn't drop.

Yes the network provider is Freedom mobile, as it’s already owned by Shaw.
The plan offers look good. $15 credit for existing Shaw internet users.

Drawback on freedom is the last time I tried their coverage in my area it was dismal. Had to stand in my living room with phone against the window to get signal. Maybe they have added a tower to make it better, that was a few years ago.

Yea, that's what I have been worried about, the coverage. May be they have improved their coverage by now. Freedom seems to be very popular in Ontario.

I wish I could transfer my hobby phone to Shaw because I only use it for calling but mostly texting. BUT... being married and stuff, I can't. Bummer! But it's not too expensive even now. $100 top up lasts me almost a year. Last time I topped it up was Oct 2019 and I still have 20 odd bucks left in it.

I’d be careful I know a couple of guys from Ontario who have freedom and they love it except when you leave Ontario then service sucks!

The new Shaw package..... Helluva a deal and yes....what are the drawbacks? Now I see why FIDO ( my provider) offered me 5 gigs extra for free. I now have 10GB for $55 but I know FIDO's network is far more superior than Shaw. But $45 for 25GB !! I just might call in out of curiosity.

The network is no where as good as the big 3. If u r going to use it in lower mainland then it should be good enough but there are still going to be dead spots. If u leave lower mainland often then it's definitely not recommended. Although Shaw indeed has invested a lot of money after they bought wind mobile and renamed it freedom mobile but they still have a lot of catching up to do to get to level of big 3.

Coverage is very poor on the North Shore, constantly frustrated. Despite the good price I will probably change to another provider.

The thing is if your in a populous area, the wifi will be good. A phone and data plan runs about $100/average per person. An internet and cable bill is somewhere between 80-150 (depending what you have). If you have wifi, get something like whatsapp (or similar app)to call over the internet. the only problem I see is that apple wants my google password to access shaw wifi on my iphone.
Whatapp just stated that it needed access to my photo, contacts and other crap on my phone.

It seem its all made to get your data on yourself.

The problem is that these apps have to have a read before and tell you what it has to access before you get the app not just in an access agreement to use their software.

I was reading reviews within the first week they started offering. Not expecting to get a lot of reviews about coverage at the time, but more on the signing up/transferring of number. Some people were complaining about the wait just to have their number ported, instead of the typical ~1 hour (or less), some had to wait for a day. And more people complained about how the staff didn't get the proper training to do the transfer and sign up.

Things have probably improved since then but I haven't done a search again. I will give it six months or so, before I decide if I want to switch.

Yea, that's what makes me wary. I was quite pumped yesterday because I could save money. But I will wait for more feedback on coverage. I am with Rogers and never really had an issue.

If you have shaw cable/internet, you have access to shaw wifi, in most cities they serve. Get a app for calling over the internet (whatsapp is one) and you still have access through your cable internet provider.

Random note, when I worked for one of the big 3 years ago, I got a Shaw exec on my line. I asked him directly how freedom is going. It's good, but realistically it takes 20+ years to build a solid tower infrastructure. It will still take time to get close to the big 3, but it's definitely on its way there. Also said they can't use Shaw cable towers, it doesn't work that way.

That said, freedom is good if you don't plan to travel. Just make sure it's in your area. Can see coverage on their website I think.

They definitely don't piggyback on the big 3 from what I remember, hence the dead/data spots. Big 3 won't let them. However, big 3 are able to use each other's networks.

Yes, that is a fact that I learned afterwards. But so far we have not traveled out of the lower mainland so I can't comment on that. But then I am the only one who has switched to Shaw. rest of the family is still with one of the big 3. So we always have a backup just in case my signal drops.

But that is a good information to have.

Data consumption on 5g is huge.... Feels like these companies know they have to offer more data if they want ppl to get on the 5g network.....

They not investing all that money for no reason...... Data shud be cheap AF but they charge an arm and a leg

We in Canada probably pay very heavily for data. While in countries like India, it is like $20 for two months and they get 2 GB every day !!!!!!!!!!! Yea, they have a large population.so they go for quantity rather than quality.

But Rogers, Bell and Telus has been raking it in big time all this time.

We have had and continue to have as close to a monopoly as possible regarding telecom service. The CRTC never worked for the general population, always for the industry thus the high rates we have and more than likely will always have. I expect the profits of the big 3 will get a nice bump once 5G kicks in and folks don't realize just how much data they are consuming in a very short time. Its a bummer but we're stuck with what we have.
