For the benefit of anyone reading this who gets a similar call, since Lo-ki didn't say so explicitly, this is not Microsoft. It's a scam to get you to pay for a service to "clean" your computer while in reality you're downloading a Trojan to allow hackers remote access to your computer where they can attempt identity theft and more.

I still remember a neighbour who only had a landline. No cable, no internet and most definitely no computer. She kept them on the phone while she tried to turn on her computer. She did laundry, fed the cat, talked to the neighbour, all while this guy was on the line.

He finally hung up and never called back.

Yep, I had this happen to me too and I was pissed! They somehow got my number like a year and a half ago and the little lady kept talking to them...She thought it was legit and kept telling me about it. I warned her not to listen to them and she said she wasn't. Then I was home one time when they called and I listened to them and I was like WTF...I played along with them like Meaghan's friend, but it just got WAY to hard to understand the thick Indian accent. They claimed they were from Microsoft, and that my computer has been showing several error messages, and that they could help me by removing the virus if I logged into Teamviewer so that they could have remote access to my computer. I knew it was messed up so I didn't even go to my laptop while I was talking to him, and eventually as he was giving me instructions, I said something and hung up on him mid sentence. He called back right away and I told him, thanks very much! It looks my computer is fixed now, I don't need your help anymore! I don't know what you did but it worked! He was confused and asked me to login to confirm lol, and I said thanks I don't need it anymore as I was now sick of him. They finally stopped calling and they had been calling for a couple weeks.

Fast foward to a few months ago, and the phone calls begin again. This time there is no little lady to answer the phone during the day lol, and they are relentless, thinking I am ignoring them. They started with like 3 or 4 per day and then over about a week I would come home and I had a dozen missed calls from them one day, with calls up to like 9:30PM! It was getting crazy and I would have my phone on quiet mode on my days off when I wanted silence. I finally answered again and said simply hello? They went through the spiel again and told me my computer was sending out errors, and they must be cleaned out to ensure proper use of my computer. I feigned shock, telling them, my God, that's so strange! I haven't owned a computer in almost a year and I certainly don't have Internet! My computer broke last year and I haven't replaced it, how are you receiving the errors, this is shocking! Like I said I don't have Internet, or a computer, so I don't know how I can stop you from receiving these error messages? I'm so sorry I can't help you today, it's so weird you are calling me, I haven't even used a computer in months! Thanks for calling though! Thanks a lot, you have a great day! Then I hung up. I did not recieve a call from them for two days. I was shocked lol. Then I got a call from them, thick Indian accent, hello sir we are calling....errors...and I told him pretty much the same but I started asking him how did you get this number, and why are you calling me, I told your "coworker" the other day I don't have a computer, I wish I could help bud, but you're digging in the wrong hole. He got all indignant telling me he is Microsoft and I registered with them and that is why he has the number and that my computer was sending out errors...I explain again, no computer (a lie) and tell him to remove me from "Microsoft's" registration database, because I do not need the help anymore. He said ok ok thank you sir and hung up! I haven't heard from them since but it was so messed up lol. I wondered how they got my number, but I figured they might have come across it randomly, I do have an easy number unfortunately. I never want to give up my number either, so I hope those guys are done now lol.

Tell them "That's terrible my computer is sending you error messages, its sending to the wrong company, can you forward them to apple since my MacBook is calling out for help, I would really appreciate it"

See what happens.

Priceless. Thank you for the chuckle. When in doubt, throw them out "or as I like to say, hang on, I gotta take a crap, I'll be right back, just a sec, or two"......... "Sorry, I'm kinda bound up right now, can you talk to my dog for a moment?"

If you Google "Microsoft telephone scam", you'll see that it's been around for a while. Every so often, I get a call from these guys. I either tell to fuck off right away or waste their time by pretending to follow along. Last call I had from them had a supposed Michigan area code.

I get a bit tired of these calls, so if I have time on my hands when they call, I may play along, and pretend to got to my computer and pretend to go through with their drill. When they ask "What do you see?" my response is usually something like "Three guys fucking a girl in all her holes". I cannot understand why, but they usually hang up on me.

I have had similar calls twice about a year or so ago.

I hung up with some very choice words probably because I was in the middle of something.

But next time, if I have time, I would love to play along and drag on the conversation till the caller figures out that it is his time being wasted.

Oh yeah, I get these calls periodically, usually in batches. Sometimes I play along and then question them how it could possibly be the case as I don't have a Windows machine and there aren't any in the household (I got my first Mac in 1985 and being an Apple fan ever since). They've tried telling me that even if it isn't Windows then they can still fix the problem. Never got to the point of actually doing anything on the computer for them. A scam is a scam. But, sometimes I like to toy with them...

And when they wake me at 5am (which they have), I tell them to f**k off as I don't like to be woken. They still call back a few days later. They have a pretty thick skin... though sometimes they have hung up on me before I've hung up on them.

I get those calls several times a month. It is usually "Oscar" on the other end. The longest I have been able to keep him on the string is 18 minutes. It usually goes like this: This is Oscar from Microsoft. Tells me there is some problem with my computer. Which computer I ask. Tell him we have 7 in the household. He say, "the Windows" one. I ask. "Which one?" How many do you got. Tell him 4 of them. Tells me to go turn on one of them. I do as asked (not really), taking at least 5 minutes. Then I tell him it is go time. (It isn't) Then he gives me a bunch of instructions. Then I tell him to hold, somebody at the door. Usually I tell him it is either Jehovas Wittness, or Mormon missionaries, but I will be back when they leave. 5 minutes of so later, I pick up the phone and he is still there, so I tell him, "Let's fix my computer". I put the phone down at my side and do not touch it, but I keep hearing him say "Hello", "Hello". It usually takes him a few more minutes, but he eventually figures out.

His English is decent, with a heavy accent, but he cannot understand somebody might be playing with him.

I had some issues with my lap top a couple of years ago so I Googled for the Dell website for customer support. Little did I know it was only a link to a private software recovery site (it looked Dell legit to me). After about 20 minutes of back and forth- during which time they had control of my computer to navigate- the dude asks me how I wanted to make payment for the services. I was like WTF? He told me straight up at that point that he wasn't with Dell- yada yada yada. I told him no way, he apologized and then he released command of the navigator back to me and that was that. I've had ZERO security or other issues since then- but just a word of warning to all.

The website for Dell is www.dell.com for US and www.dell.ca for Canada. Don't want to sound snarky but why would you even need to google it? You got very lucky, the dude could have just frozen the computer and waited for you pay to get back command of your laptop.

Easy to say now- at the time was just a force of habit to Google info as needed- multi-tasking etc. with not too much thought put into it. And yes, I feel fortunate that although not the Dell website, the outfit I dealt with was a legit trouble-shooting company and I didn't get fucked over. Dodged a potential bullet there for sure.

Dude if I were you I'd wipe that computer clean and start over. During the time he had control of your computer, he could've installed some nasty malware or worst a rootkit on your computer. I hope you don't do any internet banking on that computer...

I had a call from these scammers also. Myself being a former computer instructor and programmer and currently using a Mac (Apple) computer. I kept them on the line as long as possible, trying to corner them into what was wrong with the computer. They got suspicious of me and hung up.

I love these kinds of calls.

I once told a woman who was calling I'd buy their services if she'd cyber with me via webcam and then I'd start making grunting noises like I was already masturbating to her on the phone. "Hurry up, I'm almost there!"

Telemarketers hate me.

I once had one convinced that I was a doctor and was diagnosing him with throat cancer over the phone because I could hear a weird sound in the way he spoke. Poor guy actually bought it and was really freaking out at me on the phone.

I once had one call me right when I was headed to the bathroom. So I took the phone with me, put in on speaker, and sat there talking while sitting on the pot. I had spicy food the night before, it was a rather colorful show for the caller.
