Pencil in an extra $500-$1000 in maintenance every 3-5 years to change worn clutch plates ...
Depends on the vehicle and driving style.
I finally replaced the original clutch on my 80s BMW, around 2012
Not because the clutch plates were bad, rather the release bearing was worn out.

I had to learn on a 3 on the tree for a summer job when I was a kid. I’d say driving a stick is something I enjoy on long trips.

Somebody mentioned the bumper to bumper traffic - 1st then 2nd repeat a thousand times. My back aches just thinking about it.

I went through the kids and hockey bag era driving a van then SUV. Once that was over I went and got a sports car. It’s like you feel like one with the car and the road being more engaged

It is so much fun to drive a standard car. The road holding and handling are way better than an automatic car. If you love to drive along winding roads up the mountain or around small winding roads like in Vancouver Island ,you will see the difference. You won't have to worry about turning bend. Instead of braking ,you just have to lower the gear . The car behind will have a hard time to catch up with you.
Or if you love to race, you can always revolve your engine hard before you shift your gear! You might have to pay a little bit more.to service your clutch .On the other hand you will save a lots of money in brake pads!

I ride unicycles...they are technically manual. 1 to 1 direct drive forward or reverse doesn't matter. You can change speeds by riding different size wheels effectively. I have five different size ones...20.24.26,29, and 36 inch wheels. I can cruise comfortably on the 36er at about 15 kms per hour.

Those that learn to drive vehicle with standard transmission from the start become better drivers in my opinion , automatic is fine if your job is to drive in the city traffic all day long but getting Porsche 911 with automatic transmission damn what a waste...

The Porsche PDK will outperform the standard.

There is a certain joy in stick handling, grinding the gears, and double de-clutching!!!

For sure. Learned how growing up in the country. Just remember it is a "W" when shifting/ 1st is the top left, 2nd bottom left, 3rd top middle, 4th bottom left etc.

Have fun !

A Porsche with PDK and launch control would outperform most cars on the road. The electronic button shift would also give you all the speed control you need, including immediate downshifts.
So, performance depends a lot on the car and the driver, not necessarily auto or manual.
However, some people in auto would miss the fun of heel-and-toe, and blipping the throttle in downshifts.
Manual is a pain in stop and go traffic and hill start.
I doubt gas consumption and maintenance costs are major factors in choosing between the two.
Overall, it depends on your driving style but auto can give a more relaxed drive.

Transmissions are almost all constant mesh gears. Not grinding gears but the engagement dogs on the sliding collars to the freewheeling gear.
