Got carjacked at knife point near HSC in Winnipeg.........was driving a 5 speed Honda CRV at the time.......... turned it off and got out and then watched with amusement as the thief tried to figure it out. Finally gave up and got out the car swearing a blue streak.
One late January night in Winnipeg many years ago I was with a girlfriend on our way to a rave in the North End. Two other women approached my car when we were at a red light in an attempt to carjack us. My side was locked, but the other woman opened the door on the passenger side and tried to pull my friend out. My friend was so startled, and out of reflex she screamed and turned around and knocked out one of the carjackers.
I never drove in Winnipeg without making sure BOTH doors were locked after that night.

Pencil in an extra $500-$1000 in maintenance every 3-5 years to change worn clutch plates ...
Only if you’re a shitty clutch rider and ride with your hands on the shifter. My car is well over 10 yrs old and original clutch.

Bar none manual is so much more fun to drive, until.... you’re stuck in bumper to bumper traffic and you’re constantly going from N to 1st and back again over and over.

Why is it bad to rest your hand on the shifter?

Hey at least it's something to do while being stuck in traffic!

Manual transmissions are fun to drive, maybe a guy thing but you feel more in control and part of the car, but they are not practical. I can tell you, after 25 years of shifting 13 speed transmissions in a big rig, and I was a big believer that if you couldn't master the 13 speed you didn't belong in a truck, but I love my 6 speed allison automatic I bought 5 years ago. Especially for the kind of work I do now. Every once in a while I have to rent one of the company's spare trucks with a 10 speed and I feel like I'm 20 years old again. It's like driving a Fiat with a 4 speed, which is what I learned how to shift on when I was 15, but I'm always glad to get my auto back from the shop as my clutch leg is usually aching by then. As for the Jag mentioned earlier, steverino is right. These type of cars are designed to replicate a racing experience. Race cars, especially european , have adopted the paddle shifters long ago.

Same my clutches last forever. I was thinking he meant clutch plates for the tiptronic auto gearboxes but maybe they don't have plates, I don't know shit about auto transmissions tbh. I keep my hand on the shift knob but only when it's in neutral, never in gear. Stop and go is really only bad when you have a heavy clutch pedal like my audi S4 used to have, killer calf workout. My current car is super light pedal so stop and go isn't too bad, but can still get annoying in very slow traffic. As someone else mentioned auto trans are quicker in a straight line and flappy paddles are also faster around a track, but there's no feeling like a smooth shift and a well timed heel toe downshift.
I learned the hard way - when I was new to driving manual - I did a 5,000rpm launch and blew out the pressure plate. That was fun times limping my car back to the garage shifting without a clutch (another good skill to have) but having to shut car off at every intersection.

Yah I was raised on Manual trans . Only drove manual from 1972 till 2004. And I would of got a manual then too but they did not make the new Ford F150 in manual. Would of had to gone to a F250 or F350.
I rather have an Automatic these days.

I transport cars for a job. And every now and then I get in a car and it wont start. Dead battery, nope its,a standard. Lol.

I do love driving the mustang GT with a standard.

excuse me. I am VERY vocal and it's 100% not fake. sounds like you need to take THIS car for a spin ;)
Charlee, I would love to take YOUR car for a spin, but I am a little strapped for cash right now.

I had to buy a new toothbrush, some peanut butter, a pair of socks and a battery for my hearing aid in the last few days.
But, if I watch my frivolous spending, I should have enough saved up by next week to visit you.
I assume your rates are in the $200.00 range - so I will ask you to give me about $18.00 worth.
But, to save you a buck or two, should I bring my own condom ?

I only drive manuals but they do suck in a traffic jam. Otherwise I definitely enjoy driving them a lot more than a boring automatic.

Very few cars can even be bought with a manual anymore. Thankfully I like Volkswagens.

CVT's supposedly get better mileage, but they break down a lot.

No electric car comes with a manual transmission (or really any transmission, they just use one "gear" as they have enough torque to handle a normal range of driving speeds). So manuals are soon to be history.

Only if you don't know how to drive. I have driven my manual for eight years, not a single problem, haven't even worn out the brake pads.

For really wanting to drive, I'll take a manual every single time. An automatic is to driving, what a computer synthesizer is to music.

I do. A motorcycle. I owned a car only once a long time ago, an automatic. I like it this way. Where I grew up we only had manual transmission, and it was fun.

Doesn't a DCT service cost more than a manual transmission service though? I've only owned manual transmission cars my whole life. Just this year I finally got an automatic (DCT) car only because the car I wanted did not offer a manual transmission option. Saving up my pennies to finally one day get a Porsche in manual transmission, especially with NA flat-six engine. Porsche Speedster? ?

Why do people always complain about driving manual in traffic? Unless your car has a super heavy clutch, I've never had any problems driving in traffic. Now try driving a motorcycle in heavy traffic...the clutch hand starts to cramp...

Some very stupid rules here when it comes to motorcycles. We should be able legally pass on the shoulder, at slower speed, when the traffic is stopped or very slow. Dame with lane splitting. But i also understand that there are so many bad drivers here. What I don’t understand is why they are getting licenses so easily and stay unskilled and uneducated.

NO to passing on the right... ZERO Not at any time... I lost a good friend from some ass doing this. Riding his bike home one evening. He stopped at the side if the road across from his house to walk the bike across the road... the car behind him stopped to let him cross... the car behind it.... well you get the picture..

That's why I mentioned quality of local drivers, which is very poor. I agree, it might not work here, unless its implemented after proper education. And there are countries where you can do that and it doesn't create problems, because its part of what's allowed and everyone knows about it and keep eyes open.

No Shit. That is what I said previously here. Automatic is far more appropriate within the city. Heading out of Vancouver on HWY 1......it is horrible during the day.
