I'm considering learning to drive a manual car just for fun and to learn a new thing. Is it worth it since there are a lot of hills in the lower mainland and I mainly drive in the city?

It becomes second nature......until you own a large diesel pickup, and get caught in rush hour.
after a few years your legs become proportionaly different from all the shifting.
Ive never owned a small car, or driven one for long periods of time, so your on your own with that one.
You will drive with your stereo volume lower, to hear the rpm, and taking off on hills is a breeze , after you get to know how the clutch and car behave together.

It's actually a special order if you want to get a manual car now. Don't expect to drive one off the lot on your first visit to the dealer. They're getting especially rare in the used car market.
But if you can learn how to recover from the drop as you start from a hill, you're fine. Just some mad panic the first few times.

Also, BEST SECURITY EVER. Since manuals are getting rare, most people don't know how to drive them, which makes them less likely to be stolen. They'll more like just break a window and steal what's in the change box.

I saw this gorgeous Jaguar F type. Looked inside and I couldn't believe it. It was an AUTOMATIC. What a waste of a good driving experience. Anyone who buys a jag, porche, miata ect. and chooses an automatic must have their head up their ass. I drove nothing but standard for 20years till I got planter facitis in my left foot, making shifting painfull and medically damaging to my foot.

I have only ever driven manual until my newest car. I don’t want to mention which car it is since there’s not many on the road but I do miss manual.

I learned to drive on a 60 chevy with 3 on the tree. Then various trucks with floor shifters - long throw shifting, lots of grinding. Late 70's I bought a mint 1970 Fiat 124 Sport Coupe with this little short throw 5 speed, very short clutch, could heel and toe it. Giant 4 barrell Weber carb and an Anza exhaust. Many that was fun ... the good old days for sure.

To the OP, go for it. Enjoy the shit out of it. When its time to move on, there will be a buyer, all things considered as there will always be another enthusiast ready to take it over.

Learned to drive on a manual when driving schools were unheard of. My old man didn't know anything about automatics and wouldn't let me buy a V8 engine either when he went with me when I bought my first car.

In Vancouver nowadays, the congested traffic is so bad that it is a killer on the clutch. Might want to consider that. Outside the city, yes, its ok.

If you are new to manuals, what might help is when you have the parking park as a hand brake on the central console. When you are stopped on a steep hill, it really does help.

I have done about 400K kms on manual and about 200K kms on automatic. The manual is great for touring while the automatic is best for bumper to bumper traffic. If you don't have to deal with congested traffic, the manual might be better. Anyway, I find that the new automatic transmissions are not particularly robust.

Many cars like the Jaguar F Type have paddle shifters. A semi-automatic transmission a paddle-shift gearbox, is an automobile transmission that combines mechanisms of a manual and automatic transmission. Semi-automatic transmission refers to a conventional manual transmission with an automatic clutch. I enjoy using the paddle shifter on my car.

That is a great point to reiterate!
Most car thieves don't know how to drive a manual, so they won't bother stealing them, for the most part.
In this day and age maybe ... But back in the day when I hung with a very rough crowd, and did very bad things, we all knew how to drive a stick.

^^actually no, some thieves have no clue. When I was living in Manitoba (in my bad girl days) I had my car stolen. I found it with the clutch completely burnt out.

With a good teacher or instructor your clutch should be almost pristine after 400k or more . I had work done on forks 4th and 5th gear at 450k on a Toyota and the tranny place told no need to replace the clutch it's pristine. But it could depend on the quality of the parts too .

Got carjacked at knife point near HSC in Winnipeg.........was driving a 5 speed Honda CRV at the time.......... turned it off and got out and then watched with amusement as the thief tried to figure it out. Finally gave up and got out the car swearing a blue streak.
