I give everyone a chance, but I also weigh the evidence carefully and don't forget their past words & actions at election time, like most people do.
Been watching PP work for years. Pierre Pestilence, Pollywannacracker, whatever he is called, the dude's called that because he's an obnoxious asshole, and quite proud of it. If his goal was to have 2/3 of people hating his guts - well, mission accomplished ! Spends his time trying to repackage all the bullshit rhetoric that comes from the toxic tire-fire of US politics. He and his supporters spent the last few years cozying up to conspiracy theorists and encouraging their violent public tantrums, so what do we make of that? Either he is actually one of them (a deranged idiot), or he is just using them as partisan cannon fodder (a cynical con artist). Plus he's big on pushing some very sketchy economic schemes. My bet is that what is openly wrong with him, what people know about already, is really just the tip of the iceberg.
People such as him, and politics like his, are the reason that Trudeau won the last two elections (barely). Canadians know that mediocre still beats disaster. Even if Trudeau gets tiresome and his government seem like they're always muddling along, at least they do not get the big things wrong on purpose. They same can't be said for his opponents.
Every election the Conservative party has the chance to not act the way that angered Canadians and lost them elections. Instead, every time they fall back on the idea they just needed to act that way even more.
At least O'Toole understood you have to throw cold water on the nutjobs, not loudly proclaim solidarity with them, but that sense of discipline just wasn't in step with his own party. They got rid of O'Toole for someone even less credible, and much less likeable.
Maybe voters would be interested an alternative, a party of business-minded but responsible people who could create a stable and prosperous society, with innovation and realistic long term goals - but Conservatives just made it clear they would (still) rather be the guys who burn all that down.
