The Survivalist
I just finished watching it online. It's a simple story about post apocalyptic era that's told beautifully.
It doesn't have too many characters and the cast is very small but it is very well acted.
It's thrilling yet beautiful. It's bone-chilling at times but it shows the human instincts in a very raw fashion. It's spine tingling, spell binding and I loved it.

Strongly recommended. 8/10.

I saw the new Bourne flic at Metrotown which is the best way to see an action film.

Non stop action as expected. I enjoyed it and a few new twists were thrown in there ;)

I predict Damon will be back for JB VI

Interesting side bar is Damon only spoke 43 sentences and 288 words in this chapter.

A BBC journalist indicated that these films get a lot of foreign play. Less dialogue equals less translation.
don't go to the theaters anymore, it was on tv

it's fucking unwatchable, physically nauseating

the moronic editing, the simple cunts should stick to doing rap videos

the "shaky cam" which was a supposed hand held camera job, makes it unwatchable

can't see how anyone would find this appealing, constant movement, both camera/editing pointless

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Worst editing I have seen in a while; during the action there were like 12 edits in less than 30 seconds. Almost gave me a headache.

Plus during the night segments of the flick it was so dark, it was hard to see what was going on. I had to crank up the brightness, then went to a lit area and it was like I was hit with a flash bang grenade. No character development with most of the cast.

The story and acting were passable; a nice set piece on a building, otherwise I would recommend skipping this movie due to the issues mentioned above.

Today, they announced that the franchise is being rebooted. God help us.

"A Street Cat Named BoB" This is british film, made in London, a well crafted feel good movie.
Based on a novel, it's the story of a homeless drug addict who adopts a cat, and the 2 go on to rescue each other.
The cat is played by himself (Bob), a gorgeous ginger feline who steals most of his scenes.
8/10

Near the ending of this movie, the plot takes a very unexpected turn. I suspect that the writer(s) were trying to send a message about how unexpectedly acquiring absolute power can change a persons behavior, and not necessarily in a good way. There is also a message about how you can waste your life away on drink, and other useless behavior, if you are not careful. I definitely thought the movie was a morality tale, as are many movies with surreal plots as, for example, Groundhog Day.

Colossal: I watched it last night and enjoyed it quite a bit. Anne Hathaway handled herself very well in the role. I read that she was pregnant during the filming and that explains big, long jackets. A very different kind of movie about inner demons. I enjoyed how they revealed it gradually.

Recommend: Yes, if you enjoy off beat movies. 7/10

Bon Cop Bad Cop 2

Loved the 1st one so had to see the sequel. Seemed to have more French then the last one but it was set in Montreal. Similar Anglo-francophone humor which can always be funny. A little slow to get to the main plot but enjoyed it. Basically a good Canadian film made for Canadians.

I too watched Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. It was good but Vol 1 was alot better. And yes I stayed for the 5 after credits scenes. Can't wait until Thor comes out after seeing the trailer.

Took my nephew to watch Lego Batman.

It's both an excellent satire of Batman, as well as an excellent Batman flick. The more you know about Batman, the more you will love this film. Conversely, if you're like my 4 year old nephew just getting into Batsy, you'll still enjoy the film.

Once again, the animated version of Batman is superior to the live action version. Definitely check the flick out. In case you're wondering, this movie does not need to be seen in 3D.
Agreed took my godson to see it. Kid stood up the whole time cuz he loves Batman. The length and pace was perfect so kids and adults would enjoy it without being bored.

Alien Covenant was excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was scary, thrilling, and offered some interesting themes. Can't wait to see what happens next for the franchise.

I'm a little more conflicted about how I feel about Covenant. I did still enjoy it quite a bit but I'm one of the few who thought Prometheus was excellent and I was looking forward to a truer continuation of what was started with that film. While Covenant does touch on that and expand on it to some degree, that is almost dismissed rather briefly with a quick flashback scene and a bit of backstory that I won't reveal due to the SPOILER it would give away. Instead, Covenant ends up delivering more of what we've seen so many times before in the Alien franchise films. Although, admittedly, it's mostly done extremely effectively here. There are at least a couple of truly spectacular sequences but there is also the typically underdeveloped characters who are there to be little more than horror movie victims. The more well developed characters and a couple of the performances of the lesser developed characters do keep it interesting.

And there's still at least one significant plot gap to fill between Prometheus and the original Alien which could still happen I suppose but the end of Covenant would suggest they're going in a different direction.

Oh yeah... and the trailers gave too much away...

THE ESCORT - Not a bad depiction of a high-end escort. A Dramedy, as they say.

Another two thumbs up for I, DANIEL BLAKE.

I saw a thurs night early screening of Wonder Woman. Fucking fantastic is all I can say. DC and WB finally get it right and give the mighty amazon princess a film worthy of her character. Must see, if you like superheroes at all

I saw Wonder Woman and enjoyed it.

The editing is kind of odd, the CGI is unusually bad and the villains' motives are a little vague, but, it's still an enjoyable flick. Apparently it's making women everywhere cry. So, if you want some early foreplay, take them to this film.

I also saw Dr. Strange, now on Netflix. It's essentially Ironman: Magic. It's. . . OK. My big critique of most Superhero films is that they are at their peak powers about midway through the film. Strange speeds through that even more, as, he goes from being able to barely escape through a portal in one scene, to kicking the crap out of the main villains in literally the next scene. They set up Dr. Strange 2 in the end credits, and the next villain's motives for being a villain is both stupid and poorly written.

Editing was definitely off....all the explosions and shit going off and then u have a zack snyder like slow mo close up of the two main characters....goddam killed the pace. No post-credits but in-scene link to Batman.

But apart from the fact that it had echoes of Captain America/Thor/Dirty Dozen, it still was a decent movie. This definitely should have come before that godawful steampile of shit of previous DC movies Superman Returns, Green Lantern, Batman V. Superman, and I know I'm dating myself here....STEEL. Fucking Shaq.

2nd Zigzag's comment...def a good date movie.

As for Doc Strange, it's extremely weird to watch BC with an American accent. The man speaks paragraphs in BBC Sherlock yet is reduced to one-two liners while Tilda takes over hard. She's a better fit in Snowpiercer/Hail Caesar

John Wick: Chapter 2 starring Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Common and Lawrence Fishburne.

Rambling observations:

- If you like the first one then you will like this one, if not you might want to pass on this one.
- Higher body count.
- Ending leaves it open for a part 3.
- Lawrence Fishburne was in it for only 10 minutes; hopefully they will have more of his character in the future.
- Better than most action movies today; no shaky cam, wide angle camera shots instead of too many close ups and very few edits during the action. Yes i am lookin' at you Resident Evil the Final Chapter.

Final Score: 7 out of 10, ymmv.

- Warning Spoiler Ahead......

.......I did not find the main villan all that interesting or threatening, i would have rated the movie higher if this was not the case.

A Cure For Wellness (2017)
Directed by Gore Verbinski (also did Pirates of the Caribbean and The Lone Ranger)

+ Beautiful cinematography; the Alps looked amazing.
+ Decent acting.
-In the beginning the story really dragged, felt like a Kubrick film. Should have trimmed 20 minutes off the runtime.
-Ideas introduced at the beginning but then never fully developed.
-Listed as a horror but not very scary; creepy but that’s about it.

Verdict: other than a beautiful looking film, I would recommend skipping this one.

"Miss Sloane" - Jessica Chastain is excellent as a much soughtafter lobbyist, but she winds up making enenies among the powerful pro gun politicians and becomes their target. The ending is contrived but still, not a bad film. 6.5/10

"Lion" - Based on an autobiography about a man who was born in a poor small village in India, thru a cruel twist of fate becomes a homeless boy at 5 years old, adopted out and grows up in Australia, then goes on a quest to find his long lost mother and brother. Great story!
Dev Patel does a competent job in lead, the kid is played by Sunny Pawar and he is fantastic, and NIcole Kidman is stellar as the mum.
8.5/10 recommended.

ROOM - I caught it on movie channel being offered free by Shaw for two months. The movie came in 2015 and it received very good reviews. It is about a woman and her five year old son being held in captivity by an abductor. They only have each other and it is interesting how the boy sees things. It might sound like a crime thriller and it is, a bit. But it is more about life and perspective. (Spoiler Ahead)! Well, not really a spoiler because the promotions clearly say, that once they gain their freedom......... Anyways, so they do manage to get out halfway thru the movie and the best part is that the best part of the movie is after they free themselves.

Marvelous acting by both of them. It is VERY emotional and even gut-wrenching at times but I totally loved it. I absolutely recommend it.
