Took my nephew to watch Lego Batman.

It's both an excellent satire of Batman, as well as an excellent Batman flick. The more you know about Batman, the more you will love this film. Conversely, if you're like my 4 year old nephew just getting into Batsy, you'll still enjoy the film.

Once again, the animated version of Batman is superior to the live action version. Definitely check the flick out. In case you're wondering, this movie does not need to be seen in 3D.

GET OUT

This movie came out not too long ago and it has been getting great reviews (over 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, my go to movie review site). Finally I caught it online last night and I found it to be very good. Basically a white girl has a black boyfriend and she takes him to see her parents out in the country. There is initial awkwardness and you can feel the tension, Then things start to change after that. Lots of plot twists, turns, suspense, thrills and dark humor follow. It is not really a horror movies as some tags might suggest. It has some sharp satire on racial stereotyping and it is very well handled. The whole movie is very well filmed and very smoothly directed. I enjoyed it throughout till the end.

Recommend: Absolutely.

FENCES

I caught this one on a plane recently. Someone said in this thread earlier that he got bored. I can totally see why. The story is about a black man who could not make it to the big league despite being a good baseball player. The role is wonderful for Denzel Washington and he excels in it. The supporting cast, esp role of his wife is very good too. Later on I realized that this movie is actually an adaptation of a broadway play. Denzel Washington himself has been in that play and he decided to take it to the big screen. Since the stage can not show a lot, it has to rely a lot on dialogues. Even the first scene itself seem to go on forever. Most of the rest of the movie doesn't go to other locations either.

Overall, good film with pretty good acting. I am sure it will come up during next Oscars. Recommended: Yes, but again, it is done differently with lots of dialogues.

The Girl on the Train

I caught this one my plane ride as well. Emily Blunt acts and stars as the title character in this suspense thriller. She is the best and the only good thing in the movie. It starts well, but somewhere in the middle it just seems to fall apart. At the end it just feels like a B Grade TV movie. There are lots of flashbacks and I think somewhere in there, the director lost the grip. See it if you like Emily Blunt (she is sexy... I think).

Manchester by the Sea

Either I was just badly jet lagged or may be it was the movie itself but I started it twice and stopped 15, 20 minutes in. Reviews say that it is excellent but I found Casey Afleck's monotonous, drone like tone dreary and boring. I never finished it.

I have watched both of these movies. What I particularly did not like about The Girl on the Train is they pulled a very cheap "trick" where we find out that memories we were shown earlier in the movie were in fact totally incorrect. If that is the only way to make sense of the story, the story should just have been thrown out.

I thought Manchester by the Sea was ok. I do think that Casey Afleck's acting was good but not sure it deserved an Academy Award. What makes the really great actors great, like for example Meryl Streep, is their ability to portray very different characters. I'm not convinced that Casey has that ability.

Fences was already nominated this year. So was DW and the wife was nominated and won. Can't think of her name.

I just saw COLOSSAL. Its a weird genre bending niche film, from the spanish director who made the film Timecrimes. It has a good cast and concept, and I loved it. Definitely worth checking out if you're into weirder more indie like gems.

I saw Kong Skull Island, thought it was half baked. It had some good action but the human characters were all very one dimensional.

It's not even masturbation worthy.
Oh I don't know about that. I cranked off quite a bit to this movie.
I also discovered that Dakota Johnson was the daughter of Don Johnson (Miami Vice) and Melanie Griffith. Piece of trivia.

Europeans seem to be a step or rather miles ahead of N. American cinema when it comes to sex and nudity. French and Italian directors push the boundaries to the extreme.

Just last week, I watched Q it is also titled Desire. Talk about showing it all. The list is endless. Have you guys seen 9 Songs and Love? Basically these are movies with pornographic scenes in them.

Look left. Way left.
Just saw Ken Loach's "I, Daniel Blake". Fantastic! If you're a fan of his stuff, it's top level. If you aren't, you should be. If you don't give a shit about society and the future, don't bother.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 was legit.

I also saw drama called Their Finest, it was flawed but it had a great cast humour, and set design. maybe a rental in the future if you like the cast.

Near the ending of this movie, the plot takes a very unexpected turn. I suspect that the writer(s) were trying to send a message about how unexpectedly acquiring absolute power can change a persons behavior, and not necessarily in a good way. There is also a message about how you can waste your life away on drink, and other useless behavior, if you are not careful. I definitely thought the movie was a morality tale, as are many movies with surreal plots as, for example, Groundhog Day.

J-Dogg, I did see Free Fire on cheap night. Not worth even seeing on cheap night. It was very stretched out, paper thin plot. Got old rather quickly. If you have to see it, go on cheap night or wait for rental.

I recently saw The Wall. Its a tense one location movie with minimal cast but it felt pretty tin and the ending was lame.

Snatched was also very low brow, it got less funny as the film went on. Nowhere near the quality of Trainwreck.
