Why does Surrey BC and Escorting in the area have a bad name?

I've lived in the GVRD for more than 50 years, and I've never heard that about Langford. It must be a secret Island thing. But good to know.

Imho all cities 🏙 have their “Langford” or “Surrey”
Great Langford joke: “I asked my boyfriend to kiss me somewhere dirty so we drove to Langford”

In all seriousness Langford, is now, a beautiful 🤩 community however 50 years ago it was Dog 🐶 Patch

The way I heard it was...

"My girlfriend told me to kiss her where it smells, so I took her to Prince George."

Everyone in Prince 🤴🏻 George is a hooker or a hockey 🏒 player. Oh! Your sister is from Prince George…?!? What team does she play for…?!?

Born in the late 90s & grew up in surrey.. lived here my whole life. Surrey is nothing but a beauty. The news always boasts the little negatives about our city.. the major development that our city’s seeing now is crazy and Surrey is the second-largest city in B.C. population-wise after Vancouver. We’re evolving real quick. Article from April 2019 https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/georgetown-surrey-bc-largest-city
😉 when I drive in Surrey I always say to my passenger: “Cover me while I change lanes!”

HUH? As a visitor to BC I find Surrey and Langley to be pretty good looking and roomy and seems like a nice place to live.

You want terrible? Go to Tacoma, WA or Parts of South Seattle. It will change your tune.
Of course, but for US standards there are far far worse than Seattle area.
For Canadian standards, there is prob more riff raff in the Fraser Valley (Surrey the main part) than other places. Its all relative.

As has been mentioned here in many fronts- Surrey has been a major crime area, gangs etc. it was the ugly step sister of Vancouver for years. Picked on due to ethnic diversity too and basically the but end of jokes and radio stations helped it along.
Surrey was the poor cousin to the city and the homeland of the bridge and tunnel crowd-
The poors, or poorer so to speak.

you know TO- then think of it as Scarborough or Scarbaria as it was called.

The Surrey part described for the most part is section of Whalley. Outside of that, Surrey is ok. You can look at the another side and that is.... Why are most of gang shootings in Surrey and very minimal in Burnaby, New Westminster or North Van per say? Also, another example is....pre the year 2000, New Westminster ( New west my residence ) had a very bad rap for low track. In fact, It was referred as the 2nd to low track on East Van. Today, however, New Westminster has eliminated low track street workers. For me personally, and it dont why, I could never find a reputable lady for when I was looking for a simple " BBBJ" session only without getting scammed. Downtown Van, Coquitlam or Burnaby was more favorable for me. Just saying

Grew up near whalley in the 60’s, historically Surrey was a low rent suburb of new west etc. also close to the Okalla prison in saperton, prisoners families would live in the bridge view area ( below the patullo bridge Surrey side) due to cheap rent. There was lots of crime in the area as there usually is in a low income area. The reputation developed and never seemed to go away. This trend has seemed to follow a lot of the communities in the valley, like a previous poster stated, there are prisons in maple ridge, mission and Abbotsford.

Well said Rusty. As for New West. Thank goodness its made a turnaround for the better imo.
12th street itself has still a bit of a reminder of the past but, that's about the the gist of it. The rest of the city definitely has, and will, continue to improve. As for " Indy S.W. " providers...... New West is pretty dry which sucks. Lucky we have metro town / middle-gate close by lol.

I'm from the Island and people used to tease Langford even though downtown Victoria has way more sketchy areas, but like Surrey and else where, it's ancient history as the area has gentrified and real estate values have skyrocketed. Bear Mountain resort is in Langford for god's sake. Downtown Nanaimo and Duncan also used to get a bad rap as well but again gentrification has found them and it's all in the past.

Us ancients know that Bear 🐻 Mountain 🏔 was built on the properties of former auto wreckers. And at one time the development was the largest non-performing real estate asset in The World for HSBC which, at the time, was the largest bank 🏦 in The World 🌎. However, as you said, “ancient history” 😉

As a kid in the 60s Surrey was where people who couldn’t afford to live in Van lived. It was the first “bedroom community” that I learned of. Actually it was pretty nice back then, lots of vacant space, not crowded like Van was.

Surrey has some very expensive/rich areas and some war zones. The latter get all of the attention and it's certainly a massive gang territory, so plenty of shootings and they always seem to dump the stolen vehicles and set them on fire somewhere in Surrey. Back in the day when the streets were the major attraction, the high end was downtown and Surrey the lowest of the low. In general, rent is 1/2 of downtown rates in Surrey, so that might play into it as well. Plus, there are almost no cheap motels/hotels downtown that ladies work from much anymore, and lots of them in Surrey.

I much rather focus on the lady, there are gems everywhere and rip offs even at the highest end hotels downtown. You can't judge a book by the cover.
