right here and now
With apologies to Peyton Anders....Sorry to be differential but I would absolutely NOT recommend this wine if you're trying to impress someone who appreciates decent wine. It's sweet, flabby and has no acidity whatsoever. Sweet wines are fine but the sugar needs to be balanced with a good amount of acidity. I almost gagged when I tried this wine. Same goes for the red. Flabby and lots of sweet red berry flavours and to round it off it's as if they add sugar to it and it becomes one, big sticky mess in a glass. Even at $16.99 a bottle there are better wines available out there. One I was impressed with is from Spain called "Borsao" and it's dry, crisp with a medium finish. The grape is Macebo and it sells for $14.99 at almost every LBD. It's good on its own as an aperitif or with seafood.

Another one I like is a Pinot Grigio by Tommasi and it's $19.99 at most LDBs.

BBB has some excellent suggestions above from BC and Marquis Wine Cellars is an excellent place for rare, hard to find wines. They even have a sampling table where they let you try their new releases. Everything Wine is not bad but the staff I find aren't anywhere near as knowledgeable as at Marquis Wine.

I agree that Apothic is dreck in a bottle. Just a commercial Californian export to appeal to the masses- might as well just get some Yellow Tail and save a few bucks- blech!
For whites, there is a lot out of the Alsace region that is awesome for around $18-$22/btl. The Pinot Gris is great, and if you like a wee bit sweeter choose the Gewurztraminers. Washington whites and reds both have a lot to offer as well.

I never thought this thread would grow as much and as fast as it did. Wow !!! The information is overwhelming. There is so much (way too much ) to choose from.

I am not a wine guy and I may not be able to learn anything from this thread but I am sure many of you certainly would enjoy this exchange of ideas.

Luckily, she has emailed me that she likes vodka too (thank you for making my job easier. Yay!!! ) I too swallowed my false male pride and just asked her to suggest some brand names herself.

Thank you, you perb-erts.

One thing I have learned about any beverage whether its wine, beer or spirits; everyone has different tastes. I may like mainly medium to bold reds or whites that are more on the citrus acidic scale for many people's tastes. This does not translate to everyone liking what I have to offer. So if someone likes Cupcake or Oyster Bay or any Apothic wines; I wouldn't try to change their minds. I may not share the same bottle with them but at least we can enjoy wine. :D

Funny I cracked a 2003 Cedar Creek Pinot Noir recently with a friend who is a bit of a foodie. The wine won awards back in the day and I bought a dozen bottles before the prices went crazy. Well my friend the foodie felt the wine was a bit too young to be drinking even though it was bottled 11 years ago. Me, I just rolled my eyes because I knew it was one of the better wines I had in my collection. So it goes to show that any wine that you may enjoy may not be to the liking of another wine drinker.

I thought you would at least nominate her in a few more categories besides that :pound:
Amongst other things ;)

I did try to get her to post in the natural boobies thread

Shouldn't Blonde Brynn be here?
I was away for a week, what with life and all, but I am finally searching my name, and I hath been summoned.

The best wines often hit a dip in quality (called a "dumb phase"), after the fresh fruit flavours fade out, but before the tertiary characteristics have a chance to develop sufficient complexity. This period varies greatly and can last upwards of several years. Opening a bottle and finding it in this state sucks. Bad. Worse than TCA or oxidation or other faults. Because it's your dumb ass that did it :(

As for a nice white, if you want something different, Laurenz und Sophie has a neat Grüner Veltliner that I am very fond of.

I had to peak at BC LCB website to see the price. That's a very nice suggestion at $23 and very damn close to being a five star rated wine. I will pick one up to try to get off my support BC VQA kick :D

On that subject.

I tried this BC VQA wine recently and thought it was a winner. Now usually I avoid the blends like the plague because my gut tells me the vintner is blending to hide weaknesses in their wines.

Try this one. It is simply delightfully to drink with a meal, cheese n crackers or on its own while chilling. $24 in the BC LCB or in Private Wine Stores. 01 on the sweetness scale.

This white wine is a blend of Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Auxerrois and Schoenberger. Hints of spicy fruit and fresh acidity make it ideal for spicy Asian cuisine, grilled seafood or pasta.

I love Vinho Verde which is a Portuguese wine. It has a slight effervesce to it, and its very fresh and light. You can find it at BC liquor stores for under 15$ a bottle, or some cold beer and wine stores have a smaller selection at around 20$ a bottle. These are a few I have tried and really enjoy.

BBB, you almost got it.
Traditionally wines are blended to create the best possible outcome from a number of different varietals. Within a region, grapes grow differently because weather that is good for some is not good for others. Blending produces the best possible outcome, year in and year out.

North America is "ignorant" to the world of wine so what they did was to simplify things by only using ONE GRAPE! Yeah, single varietal wines do not really exist in the countries that created wine! So yes the vintner is hiding flaws but more so, he is also enhancing the final product.
You snipped me prematurely because my comment was to try a blend I had enjoyed recently. This acknowledged that my single varietal grape thinking was flawed.
