Tried to catch up on Oscars nominated movies. For Fucks Sake. So many duds but then that's the Holyweird press/academy etc for you.
All my opinion so don't judge me too harshly:
Everything everywhere blah blah, what a fucking train wreck. Really tried to stay with it but it was so hackneyed and really pathetic I mean grade B or even C, I bailed.
Tar, Nope. Bailed 20min in.
Triangle of sadness, just fucking sad, bailed
Fabelmans, watched it, or maybe I fell asleep through it. Shitty
Banshees, watched it at a theater kept waiting for it to get good, it didn't and as much as I admire Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, it was just not that good a movie.
Maverick, good entertainment but not that good a movie if you know what I mean
Elvis, same as Maverick
Women talking and Western Front haven't seen, not interested
Avatar will see eventually in 3D for the effects
Did I miss anything? Does it matter?
/end shit movies rant
The Oscars always have this tension between small highly-artistic films and epic blockbuster type films. They went from 5 to 10 nominees because people complained that they routinely have seen zero Oscar best picture nominees.
On the other hand, some years certain blockbuster films would just steamroll over everything and the indie / artistic crowd would complain that the Academy was too easily swayed by big money campaigns.
There's really no way to resolve this.
I have seen 3 of the films nominated:
Avatar (good to see in theatres, or else not really worth $$$ )
Everything etc. - well, I enjoyed it, an Michelle Yeoh is nice to watch, but as a concept, it could have just as easily been a double-length Doctor Who episode or something.
Elvis - finally saw like 2 days ago, and it was okay, not a knockout. I thought Walk The Line from years ago was better.
I would definitely want to see All Quiet On The Western Front, but I do not think I would see in a theatre. I've read the book years ago, and saw one previous version of the film (which was so-so). With war films, the technology to make decent battle scenes gets better and better, so if the plot/screenplay is well done, it should be a good film. Mind you, I have seen other recent films like 1917, which could not hold my attention the whole way through.
