Time for me to get some new books for the summer! I've got a few on my list but I love getting ideas from others..
I guess I'll start..

the bride stripped bare

its interesting but not what I thought it would be, I was hoping it would be like another book I love called driving men mad.. its full of short stories.. I think about an escort, but not sure.. it kinda gives such an impression but never really confirms it.... I recommend it.. skip the bride stripped bare

In Defense of Atheism by Michael Onfray Excellent read considering how in many areas of the world, religion (the beliefs of some) is influencing politics (the rights of all).

Just finished: Freakonomics. Also an excellent read as it explains how many things are related, even though to look at them individually you'd never think they would effect each other.

Next: either Nine Parts of Desire (about women and/in Islam) OR No-Logo OR the 2nd 1/2 of Germs, Guns & Steel (about why some civilizations are more "successful" than others, I got 1/2 way through and lost it somewhere).

GUY books:

" Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist explores the Hidden Side of Everything" Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner

Excellent book on things analyzed from a unique economic viewpoint, entertaining explanation of some of the mysteries of how things work. Not boring as you would expect.



"The demon and the Monk" David Grant

His story about beating addiction, on the streets of Calgary. The cover of the book is his demon/monk full back tattoo. Pretty good read, esp since I know all the places he desrcribes. - hard to find but out there... in the library too - place a hold you'll get it in 6 months.



"This is Cocaine" Nick Constable

All about it, the process, the social aspects, where it comes from, history. Has evrything except how to inject crack, but that's a new thing and the book is 3 years old.



"The art of the chopper II" Tom zimberoff

Cooooool choppers... I wanna build one but not a Harley, too passe. I think I'll use a bio-diesel VW drivetrain, or maybe a turbo Chrysler w/automatic. Can't decide. If those bozos on American Chopper can build em, so can I. The only diff is that mine won't cost me 50K and sell for 100k, sheez - that's just the OPPOSITE of what a chopper is s'posed to be... CHEEP...

None of them easy to get through...but each of them....wow, retrospectively, fascinating. Did I spell retro right?...I think so...

Celestine Prophecy - tells of a tale of a person's quest for a Manuscript in Peru. The manuscript opens you to a world of a new way of being. That we have these energies within us. It's a great book; a little bit older but well worth it. It's fiction for the next marketing new age ploy -- the secret

I read the Celestine Prophecies....on the recommendation of a waycoolamazinglyhotfunneedtogetclosertoyou chick....and I can only say...I was disappointed to find an advertisement at the end...urging me to join some sort of club they were running...wtf was that?

I would also reccommend "The Time Traveller's Wife" and "The Bride Stripped Bare". Both were good reads.

If you want some fun, silly books to read at the beach, the "Shopaholic" series is ridiculously cute.

"Tuesdays with Morrie" and "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" were both wonderful.

I just read "Pride and Prejudice" again as well as "Emma". (but I am a nerd who likes the classics.)

Next: ..... OR No-Logo OR .....

Just my 2c, but I was actually rather disappointed with that one. Not a bad book per-se, but seemed a bit overblown and drawn out (I only managed to get through about a third of it before I got bored and moved onto something else). Having said that though if you've never seen the documentary called "The Take" that was done by Naomi Klein then go check it out of the library -- very cool stuff.

At any rate, if you like those "anti-corporate" kind of books check out:

The celestine crap was a ripoff of Carlos Castaneda Don Yuan series.....A good book on life values is ''Zen and the art of motorcycle maintence '' by Persig , makes you look at things in a different slant. Also '' The holographic universe'' is a real eye opener. Right now I'm reading '' Memoirs of a Geisha '' its a decent read so far.

You've probably already read it, but George Eliot's Middlemarch is my favourite Victorian classic--the heroine Dorothea is passionate about social justice, and it takes some time for her to learn hard and valuable lessons about her own passionate heart. For what it's worth, I'm with those folks who think Eliot the smartest of her peers--more insightful than Thackeray, wiser than Dickens, she wrote with an unmatched intelligence wedded to a finely tuned emotional sensibility.

I am currently reading Tourjours Provence it is the follow up to A Year in Provence. Very funny with great characters, after reading the first book I wanted to goto Provence to meet all the great and somewhat crazy people he writes about.
