It also hilarious how little Americans understand about their own electricity. If BC, Ontario, and QC cut the power… half the US goes black, and the other half does too because what’s left can’t handle the drain and explodes. Probably metaphorically, but this is the US we’re talking about so the private equity in utilities has probably gutted “expensive and therefore unnecessary” safety protocols… so maybe it’ll be literal.
Canada supplies about 1 to 2 percent of the total US consumption. Not enough to turn the switch off everywhere but in mid winter or mid summer it is critical.
The US consumption is around 4000 terawatts a year of which around 40 terawatts comes from Canada. The network are critically linked which is why it's still a big bargain tool that trump definitely doesn't grasps.
US Power companies will or would become our strongest allies and lobby if I would have to bet to avert rolling power outages.

They make me sad. I don’t understand how someone could just… not care about other people? Like it’s so easy to not be actively terrible. I grew up being promised Star Trek, and it is beyond my ken and reckoning how so many people would rather have a reality that makes Blade Runner *look* like Star Trek.
