Felt sadness all day yesterday, after reading Hatrick`s dramatic report. https://perb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?189668-Karen-9677-ers-don-t-get-rolled-like-I-did

Tremendous pleasure is possible in this hobby, but also many shades of disappointment—and the occasional brutal ripoff.

Hatrick`s altercation with the SP`s pimp/BF (and, most likely, her drug-supplier) is probably the worst incident I`ve yet read about. That it happened to a veteran of this hobby—to my mind, Western Canada`s most famous pooner alive—makes it all the more poignant.

For Hatrick to fight with a guy much stronger than himself was admirably gutsy, but perhaps not the most advisable thing to do. I admire Hatrick`s amazing fortitude. But the money we`re talking about here—I`d guess around $100—was hardly worth the beating he took.

Can`t help asking myself, in this type of situation, what I might do when the lady leaves with my money and a guy appears in her stead telling me to get lost. Here`s what I might say.

Me: "Easy, easy, brother. I guess you don`t know who I am?"

Him: "I don`t care. Get lost!"

Me: "Just a moment, brother. I understand, you need the money. But by stealing my $100 now you`re losing far more than you gain."

Him: "How so, fucker?"

Me: "Well, think about about the bad publicity you`ll get. Guys will write about this place on internet forums. Thousands of guys will read about this ripoff. You`ll have difficulty advertising. Your business will dry up. You may have the cops on your back. Or a guy might come back with a bunch of friends."

Him: "So what! Get the hell out!"

Me: "Sure, right away. Let me just say, I think you`re really a good guy. Of course, you need cash badly. I`m willing to donate my $100. But deep down, aren`t you`re ashamed of the scam you`re pulling here? Ripping off poor guys like me, who just need a little female company."

Him: "Get the hell out. Now!"

Me: "My friend, I have a far better idea how you and your lady might make cash. Lots of it. Thousands of dollars."

Him: "What? Okay, how?"

I might explain to the guy how he and his lady could attract pooner business. The idea is to talk softly, show man-to-man empathy, establish at least minimal rapport, and get him to think about the shortsightedness of his actions.
---

No great probability this approach would get me my donation back. Certainly won`t work with a far-gone junkie who can`t think straight.

But maybe it`s worth a try? Just bailing quietly rewards those con men and encourages them to continue their scam. And getting into a fist fight, as Hatrick did, may be even more costly all around.

Interesting idea, if you were dealing with rational people, which you're not.
What's your plan B?

Sorry, yeah. I say cut your loses and go. What if they had a dirty needle or worse a gun? Actually a dirty needle might be worse. IDK. Like Uh Oh said you are NOT dealing with rational people. And Hatrick, I am so sorry to read that. :(

Sounds like Tant has gotten a stronger prescription for his rose-colored glasses.

Eat the $$ loss and protect your ass.

You are very likely not dealing with a rational person. Why treat the situation in a rational way?

I think the best option is to just leave.
If you are the type that likes to fight, then so be it.

But to basically try to coach him how to pimp?

There is no way to reason with people like this one. Take the $100 loss, keep all your teeth and live to poon another day.

Lucky it was a low cost date.

I'm surprised anyone even considers there are any other options.

If you work in any store or bank - or if someone jumps you on the street or tries to highjack your car by telling you to get out, why anyone would even consider it wise to a)try to argue or reason with someone like that or b)try to fight them? That's just crazy or naive and nonsense!

I haven't read the thread being discussed and it's awful if Hatrick got beat up. But when something like this happen, you take your losses, walk away and be grateful the only thing you walked away without is a hundred bucks - a couple hundreds at most. How exactly most of you would even manage to explain it to your SO's or why you can't/won't report it to the police because your SO can't find out how you got there in the first place.

I can imagine it must suck - no doubt. But there's no way it's worth the risk - any risk. Be glad they're letting you walk that easily and that's it.

Sheesh. Sorry, but what in the world is the OP thinking?

Almost unanimous consensus—rare on PERB!

I see, most who commented would beat a hasty retreat.

That's certainly your choice. Play it safe, cut your losses, keep your head down. A recipe for longevity.

But passively accepting defeat wasn't Hatrick's choice, and—depending on circumstances—I hope it wouldn't be mine either.

I probably wouldn't imitate Hatrick's reaction to this kind of ripoff. I'm the chatty type. I generally believe, there's power in standing one's ground in a communicative, non-violent manner.

In a situation where the SP takes my cash and a guy appears telling me to get lost, I think there's a small but non-negligible chance to get through to him by appealing to his better nature.

There's a lot of gradation between what's "rational" and "irrational." A bully in Hatrick's situation has every interest not to stab or otherwise assail a peaceful pooner, because that would almost certainly bring on the police.

So I think, getting through to this kind of guy is partly a matter of striking a cord with him—just as picking up a female stranger in public is partly a matter of hitting the right note.

get through to him by appealing to his better nature.
That he ever has one is a big assumption. Might as well tell him he won't go to heaven for stealing.
Sometimes you get what you pay for, I ain't losing teeth over a $100 whore.

Tant, seriously do you think a guy who is prepared to rip off someone will suddenly have a change of heart and say "you are right, I have done something quite wrong"?

Now if this were a $1000 date over extended hours it would be worthy of revisiting the residence with some of your own friends equipped with the appropriate Peace Makers.

You can not reason with drug dealers who would sooner stick a knife in your gut than return the $100.

I think you are really over estimating your negotiation skills. I am sure in whatever profession you are in you are not dealing with crack heads or crystal meth.

Brace yourself.....
Some chick lets a stranger stick it in her for $100, she's a whore.
Over $200, she's a service provider.
Over $400 she's a lady with standards.
Over $800 lady is a mouth watering hot skilled professional.
Over $1600 this goddess could bring down a government.

Did you miss the part about Hatrick having his phone stolen?
You can call 911 from any pay phone for free and most people with cell phones will call for free as will any cab driver you can flag down. Always get an incident report for these things. It helps give you credibility when asking sites to remove ads if you can provide evidence of your claim with an incident number.

If I was single and younger, and in a pissy mood,
yeah the pimp would have a problem.

Since I'm older and married and shouldn't dam well be there in the first place.
