If not for the special relationship of some powerful people in Washington with the Royal Family, CITIBANK would have been allowed to go under like Bear Stearns or Lehman during the recession. The good thing is it will never go under though.

It's amazing what goes on around the world.

I have a friend who once accepted a one year nursing contract to live/work in "The Kingdom of Fahad". The contract was insanely lucrative and her living quarters was palatial but the Kingdom's customs and laws got the best of her. After serving only two months, she severed her contract and returned to Vancouver.

OK, so we got all the western usual suspects out of the way. Now, the top ten reasons why she was really beheaded:

1) Listening to Abba tunes on her iphone 4GS (punishable in any civilized society)
2) She was thought to be performing witchcraft because she was bust'in some crazy new bieb moves (we usually just beat these folks up, but beheading is really a more effective solution)
3) She turned down some important dude for a date, so there must be something evil about her (same thinking applies here in Delta)
4) When asked if her occupation was professional or technical, she inquired "which?". (We all make bad word selections sometimes)
5) After being raped repeatedly by a gang of street thugs, she had the audacity to state that she wished their penises would fall off (such criminal intentions cannot go un-punished, lest they come true)
6) Apparently she survived the drowning, therefore she must be a witch (eastern logic is a bitch)
7) Bad shoes ('nuff said)
8) Who needs that head thingy anyway? (brains are sooo over-rated)
9) No, No, you ninnies, they didn't cut her head off, they just stuck her head in a sack full of honey bees. Get it? "Bee-Headed". Ha Ha. They thought that would sweeten her up. (died anyway)
10) She was ugly (or looked like she might be related to Uncleg)!!!

Sorry, but the attitude in this thread is alarming. It just shows that the majority, in the West, feel our culture is superior than 'others.'

Saudi culture sounds extremely backwards to most Westerners, but we must realize that NOT everyone agrees with our 'liberal' lifestyles here. How many take the time to speak to Saudi women and ask them if they are treated badly?

How would one talk to a Saudi woman if they're not allowed out of the house or even to talk to a man they don't know?

Treating someone as a fellow human being regardless of creed or culture or gender, is a superior culture.

I had a friend who lived in Saudi. Moved there with his family for work, lived in a compound. Only lasted 6 months.

Saudi culture is far more brutal and primitive than the rest of the Arab and Muslim world. (Other friends have moved to Dubai and simply love it. Working in construction.)

It is very possible and reasonable to point out the flaws of other cultures, as long as one is specific about the terms of reference. I certainly believe that the closer a nation adheres to secular democracy, equal treatment of women, avoidance of a class-based culture, etc., the better. Saudi Arabia fails miserably on all counts. Studies comparing standards of living and enjoyment of life also reinforce this observation.

Can't agree with you more. Our justice system in many western countries are just as brutal and babaric as these so called "backward" countries. One apparent civilized western country such as Texas still has the death penalty and executes people on a regular basis. Just take a look at there execution schedule.

Upcoming Executions: http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/upcoming-executions

It is absolutely discusting how these poor people have not only there civil rights violated but there very life taken away by the state they are citizens in. This is not a free and democratic way achieving justice in a society.

Canada is not getting any better either. Just take a look at Harper and his cronies pushing for more prisons. Pretty soon if we don't stop Harper we'll end up just the same.

The irony of our culture feeling superior to others is that ours isn't any better. We preach that we are enlightened, but we have gender, racial and sexual persecutions just like the "other" culture. We claim we're democratic, but how democratic are we really? Our values and system is at best broken. We criticize another culture, meanwhile, ours is pretty fucked up and is severely flawed. Those would point out that we're "better" off than the "other." Congratulations, we're better than Saudi Arabia. That's like Roberto Luongo saying he's better than a house league pee wee goalie. Sadly, that makes most people in our society content and not willing to improve our status quo.

We criticize how 'backwards' these countries are, yet I never see the moral outrage about our government funding these regimes to stay in power. I haven't heard anyone discuss the barbaric-ness of the US government providing SCAF (aka: The Bad guys) nasty gasses they are inflicting on the Egyptian people, or the fact they know SCAF are openly raping women. Nor have I seen the outrage that the Americans let the Bahraini king impose his will on the Shi'a majority.

We're enlightened, we know better, yet we do nothing. That's by far a greater crime than those ignorant of what they are doing.

Exactly which studies are these? Who conducts these studies and for what motive? It's very typical; assuming what we see on the news and in newspapers is legitimate knowledge. Again, I'm sure people with their 'superior' mentality have never traveled to Saudi Arabia nor have taken the time to speak and mingle with Saudi women.

Did you know Arabs wipe their asses with their hands?
Did you know that the Arab women have to shave their heads bald? That's why they wear those things on their heads.
Did you know they eat babies from non-believers? Eating babies is supposed to give you eternal life. That's what it says in the Koran.

You're right they should be building more mental hospitals for left wing nut jobs!

I have lived in Saudi Arabia for a few years and do have first hand experience with the country and the people. Women and minorities are treated like dirt, the practice of any religion other than Sunni Islam is absolutely prohibited although there are more than 3 million non muslims that account for 15-20% of the population. Due process does not exist and you can still get beheaded for witchcraft or proselytizing.

The Comparison with the "republic" of Texas makes absolutely no sense given that there is a huge appeal process and executions are only carried out once all appeals have been exhausted.

I am quite sure you lived in an expat compound that did not get a first-hand experience of living side-by-side with Saudis. My experience differs entirely.
