It's a case of "not in my backyard". People are petitioning to have the city of Vancouver create a red light district for sex workers on the street. But where? And would this contain workers? I can't imagine everyone staying in the same spot. Thoughts?

Residents of Vancouver's Kensington-Cedar Cottage neighbourhood are petitioning the city to crackdown on prostitution in residential areas and establish a red light district for sex trade workers.

Ewart Aitken says in the dozen years he has lived in the East Vancouver neighbourhood — which centred around the intersection of Kingsway and Knight Street — it has been overrun with drugs, petty crime and prostitution.

"It's getting worse. It's getting a lot worse. And it's happening at quite a fast rate and it's kind of frightening."

The father of two says he's seen everything from needles to human feces on his street, but the biggest problem, he says, is sex trade workers behaving aggressively near local schools.

"My kids and I were approached on 22nd [Avenue] by one asking us to call her a cab. She was clearly strung out and she was freaking my daughter out. I want to feel safe in my community and that day I did not feel safe."

Aitken says residents have worked to improve the neighbourhood, but now they want the city to step in and help.

"We're asking that the city ... create some sort of red light district where the sex trade workers can go somewhere and be safe and basically that sex trade is taken out of the residential neighbourhoods — not just our neighbourhood, all neighbourhoods — and put them in a place that's safe, where they have access to police and street nurses."

It's not clear where he wants the red light district located, but Aitken says organizers hope to meet with city officials in coming weeks.

Some 237 people have signed the petition so far.

I don't think these girls' problems would be fixed by a red light district.

They need to be taken off the drugs, away from the pimps and given a fresh start.

I have always felt that having a designated red light area provides the girls with safe environment. They dont have to depend on (and be exploit by) the pimps.

But yea, the big question is ....... where? No one wants it to be in their community.

You're right Claire, it is always a "not in my area" situation. This topic comes up every couple of years. Once an area becomes known as SW stroll, the traffic and associated problem come to light for the residents and businesses in the area. Law enforcement moves them along until they resurface in another area, and we start all over again.

Pretty much like a revolving door.

Knowing the city, they will open up some red light district, and screw up the city even more

I am in the Kensington area and those girls out there are strung out big time, it's actually sad, but I don't have the answers....certainly the cops don't want to deal with the problem

There is a great tour being offered by the Vancouver Police Museum about the Red Light Districts of yesteryear.
The Museum Curator says "Prostitution played an important role in the life in Vancouver, as it did in every port city. When city coffers were low, madams were hauled in front of a judge, paid a fine, and then allowed to go back to work. It was just a cost of doing business, and as Cat notes, the madams used it as a marketing opportunity, parading through town in their best clothes, and then returning to work to find an eager line-up of fresh customers." OMG The Good Old Days ! LOL
http://evelazarus.com/red-light-rendezvous-at-the-vancouver-police-museum/ It is only $20. I will be taking it. Anyone want to escort me?

LOL, this is NEVER going to take off in Canada or USA. For the poor souls in this area a trip down to Tijuana ' Zona Norte is about as close as we come. I go maybe twice a year down there.
BTW airfare Sea to San Diego is now about 190 bucks RT late Aug and Sept.

I always thought that Mitchell Island would be a great place for a red light district. build a few brothels in a gated area. have all the street lamps red. I don't think anyone would argue against Mitchell island.

Yes, but the girls such a district would be designed for are probably going to be exploited by pimps even if there was such a place. I think it is inherent in their particular circumstance.

Plus, if you did have a real designated red light district, it would presumably be more tightly controlled. That kind of scenario would likely be unattractive to the sorts of women who are causing these public nuisance issues in the local community, so I think they probably would not use it anyway.

The only way a red light district would work is if there was solid regulatory oversight and they went hard after the people who didn't use the district for doing their business.

If you like harm reduction, that's not the way it works. Give people better support and options and some day they may want to get off drugs and be able to. Being "taken off drugs" and "away from the pimps" by some other agent will cause more problems than it solves. The "control the victim" approach is popular with Harper's supporters and we know how that's working.

Nope

Society shouldn't be funding the abomination of hard drug abuse. I have a relative who has been in the system going on 25 years now, it never ends but the welfare never stops either, not to mention endless trips to emergency for problems due to drug abuse. The costs to fund their lives are astronomical.

How can he tell the difference between human feces and dog? The toilet paper?

Red lights districts are very successful in many European countries. If set up properly, they would be successful here as well. The bigger issue is with drugs, pimps and the prostitution that results from those activities. That, IMHO is a totally different issue and wont be solved by a "red light" district.
