I need to get into shape. Man tits, thick torso in the mirror, molson muscle - it's time to tone up a bit.

But discipline is the problem. There are so many excuses - I worked hard, just today I'll rest, I'm so busy there's no time. And then when I am exercising - I'm tired now... ...I'll go longer tomorrow.

Is a private trainer the only option? What should I be paying? I don't really need an expert kinesthesiologist, just a motivator...

There is a lot of information on the Internet like bodybuilding.com. Core exercises like planks and Swiss ball and bosu ball work can all be found on the net. I wouldn't waste money on a trainer. Go slow, observe what other people do, ask the guy who works at the gym if you aren't sure about something. Once you get going it comes together and starts making sense. Good luck man!

The problem with some trainers is they are like timeshare salesmen.
They will be only too happy recommending you see them 3 times a week for the rest of your life.
At $100 a pop.

But if its about motivation, then a friend is best.
If you don't have anyone, just go to the gym the same time each day, it will be all the same people.
You get to know them.

If time is the problem, it has to become a priority. Get up 20 min early 3 times a week for 2 weeks, then 40 min for 2 weeks, a month from now an hour early. Or delay stuff after work and get it in first thing before getting on to evening activities.

If motivation is a problem... Get into a class, get a friend who will cheer for you, remind you, hold you accountable

If you don't know what you are doing... Get a personal trainer or join a Crossfit gym or yoga studio or Steve Nash Fitness and go to classes.

That's half your battle, diet is the other half.

Best of luck!

It's really expensive. I spent $800 in a few months with a personal trainer at Fitness World. She was really hot with big tits. But I don't think it was worth the money. It was over $50/hour.

try a month without then try a month with
I personally dont use one, and find them somewhat annoying, over priced
unless you are a top tier athlete those personal trainers are nothing more then expensive motivational posters

if you need motivation get a buddy to go with, or make a gym buddy, or just listen to music that gets you moving

Nutrition is definitely huge, but again that information is readily available on the Internet. Google is your friend. So is common sense where eating the right kind of food is concerned. A basic premise I try to follow is to avoid mixing proteins and starches - yes meat and potatoes, for example - as they spoil in your stomach. Nothing wrong with eating a nice steak, but have it with a salad, or steamed asparagus and/or avocado. Substitute the steak with pasta, rice or potatoes, and it works just fine with veggies or salad. It goes without saying that chips, chocolate bars, pop, etc. are 'empty' calories and will not enhance the results you get from working out. Chopped dates, almonds, walnuts, dried cranberries/raisins make for tasty snacks that provide real nutrition, not to mention the energy you often need to get through a demanding workout.

It seems a bit overwhelming at first, but then you start seeing results, and next thing you know it becomes a lifestyle. Good luck to you sir!

Any service where they don't charge you $50+/hr generally means they don't know what they are doing or they are highly motivated to give you a special deal (friend, family, they are new and trying to get the word out)
Trainer, chiro, plumber, lawyer, designer... All should be charging you at least $50/hr for individual attention.

If you can't afford 50-80 an hour go to group setting classes where you don't get one on one, but you do get motivation and correction and there are others to help pay a knowledgeable instructor

Diet is super important! You can't train out a bad diet. I totally recommend personal trainers. From a strictly motivational point, and their knowledge of how to work out effectively. Plus you are paying them, so you will go. LOL. You could find someone pretty decent in the 50-70 dollar an hour range. Interval training, weights, and core exercise is the way to go. Running on a treadmill for an hour will get you nowhere. But nutrition, nutrition, nutrition!

You might find that after a few months, you will just love it and won't need the additional motivation. But good luck to you! Getting fit just feels awesome!
This.

You must eat "clean".

Your diet is super important.

Working out (resistance training) builds muscle, defines and tones your look. BUT your Abs are made in the kitchen.

From my experience booking a trainer first thing in the morning gets your ass out of bed. If you miss your appointment....guess wht? You already paid for it. So you lost money.

Trainers know how to burn fat, how to build muscle and how to keep iot off. They giver good nutrition advice and they know what to say on your bad days and do their best to push you harder.
Becuase let's face it, the best adcertising is word of mouth advertising, so if you can make some lose 40, 50 , 70 lbs and they tell all their friends, that trainer must be pretty good!!

The OP isn't going to enter Mr Olympia. At least for now, he sounds like he just wants to get rid of his man boobs and trim the waist line a bit. I recommend baby steps (no trainer for sure). It's summer time...go for a 20-30 minute walk several times each week. For resistance training, pushups and other exercises that can be done around the house or at a park can go a long ways.

Diet is important but you may fail if you try to "eat clean" as some are suggesting. There are more moderate ways to adjust your diet without depriving yourself of things you like. It's a process and jumping in with both feet often does not work.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback. I do walk more in the summer time, so each year lose a couple of inches. But this last year it was two off, four on, so I have a bit more work to do.

I may join a gym - I have never done that before - I was always the kid who skipped phys ed.

It sounds like the cost of trainers is too high. I'd have to give up pooning! Maybe a gym has a group session or something. We can motivate each other.
