I got a reusable cold drink container c/w straw.

I've never felt good about all the plastic being dumped and not recycled. As I understand it, straws account for 2% of the plastic waste found in the ocean. Every 2% counts I guess.

Far and away most of the plastic garbage found in the Pacific is traceable back to China. Good luck getting them to care let alone do anything about it.

Purely pooners' point of view: The way they are banning stuff around the world... I am afraid one day they will ban use of condoms. ....... !! May be not, I am sure they will come up with reusable ones.

So the trick to solving that problem......is to be first in line?

Single use straws to be banned in Vancouver by 2019. Hmmm for SBUX I have a personal mug but how about smoothies and the like you really need a straw to suck those up? Guess you'll have to carry them in your vehicle or at least one reusable straw anyhow.
The ban was on plastic straws. Straws used to be made of paper. For milkshakes and smoothies they can just go back to that.

I made a couple of stainless ones ...from ....ummmm...a piece of equipment that the coil was to long, to cool a rather hot liquid.
You know!....nothing illegal ,or anything like that.
I carry a few in my truck, and have a few in my house....they also make awesome pea-shooters.

There isn’t anything illegal about conducting chemical experiments to see how different substances react under different conditions, and then testing to see if they may be a viable beverage that could be commercialized for human consumption. Wasn’t that how coca-cola was discovered... or something like that? And fermented beverages are a hot market segment currently...

Does Sybian have a still....:)

Although SS straws are easier to clean in the dishwasher. Around the house I can see using SS straws; in the car not so much (messy and where to put it until you get home to clean it).

First .....I've been warned about discussing illegal activities on this board....so No!, I do not own ,or operate a distillation equipment, as it is a controlled product, that requires a permit number under the excise tax act, from the federal government.... I am simply ,from time to time, in charge of quality control.
A bottle of water in my truck seems to rinse and clean my stainless straws well.

What's to stop us from re-using plastic straws? And what's to stop us from rinsing them and putting them in a recycle bin when they are no longer usable?

What is the cost, in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, of making a paper straw, and how does that compare to the cost of making an equivalent plastic straw?

What is the cost, in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, of making a metal straw?

I'm not advocating for any particular choice, but I do think that when we jump on a bandwagon like "ban plastic", we fail to consider the entire picture or the entire cost of our preferred choice. An example of that is the plastic grocery bag vs. re-usable cotton grocery bag question. According to one study, the environmental cost of making the cotton bag is about 150 times the environmental cost of making the plastic bag. If that is correct, then the cotton bag is a better choice than the plastic bag only if the cotton bag is used more than 150 times for every one time the plastic bag is used.

Apparently plastic straws are a problem for the normal recycling stream. They tend to fall through sorting grates. My reusable grocery bags are made from recycled plastic. There're pretty sturdy. I've had a couple of them for several years.
