The music thread got me thinking about the slump in movie attendance. I know I don't go anywhere near what I did even three years ago. Are you part of the trend to stay away? If so, why? For me it's the classless audience. I just don't want to spend all that money to listen to cell phones ringing, watches beeping, and idiots talking non- stop. There are no longer ushers patrolling to control rowdies. Even if I tell them to shut up it ruins the movie wondering if they retaliate. The other thing is the reliance on special effects in so mnay films.Simpler to rent a DVD.

$15 Bucks is one reason

Too Pricey.

It can cost $60 to go to a movie and actually eat movie food.

I love movies, but most won't pay that.

Just like a hockey game, when the price gets to high, people start paying attention to the value you are getting.

Drop the prices and people will not overthink before they decide to go.

I disagree

There are lots of good movies out there.

But when it is $40 - $60 bucks it isn't worth it to gamble on the results.

I agree the industry is a bit corrupt, with critics taking themsleves to seriously and directors trying to hard to make entertaining movies.

The reality is there is more chaff, but still some winners. The cost is the issue, when i can buy a DVD for $25 3 months later and see some interesting extras etc. Why spend the cash to see it in the theatre.

I like building up my DVD collection and when you can buy previously viewed movies from Blockbuster for a price range of $6 - $14, it's tough for the movie theaters to compete.

I did see 'War of the Worlds' recently and was turned off by the nearly 10 minutes of commercials in front of the 10 minutes of trailers. That might turn some people away, although it's kind of a Catch 22. The more people stay away, the more movie theaters will have to make up revenue by airing more commercials.

Pretty much the same as all above, but for me toss in a hi-speed internet connection and a bit of patience and all the movies are free, well indirectly free since I still pay for the internet, and DVD's to put 'em on, and the pizza or what ever food I would buy to watch 'em that evening.

I only go to the theatre a couple of times a year, I prefer to watch movies on DVD.

At home I don't have to put up with inconsiderate people (It should be legal to kick the ass of anyone who talks or answers a cell phone in a theatre)

At home I don't have to fight with anyone over the armrests. The last movie I went to (Star Wars III) was crowded and the guy to my left took the entire armrest so I felt crowded and uncomfortable.

At home I can lie down and really relax if I choose.

At home I can fix my own snacks and food at a fraction of the cost of theatre food and have far greater selection.

At home I can pause the movie and go to the bathroom and not have to hold it in or miss any of the movie. If I get stuck in the middle of a row of seats I don't like getting up and disturbing the other people in the theatre and if I'm at the end of the rows it pisses me off when people get up and walk in front of me.

I don't like being close to the screen in a theatre, I always try to sit in the last couple of rows in the theatre so if the movie is crowded and I get stuck sitting farther down in the theatre I don't really enjoy the movie.

At home with DVDs I also get to see the special features so I feel like I'm getting more bang for my buck.

Another thing that pisses me off at the theatre these days is that they have started showing commercials. They are already gouging me on the ticket price and the concession then they have the nerve to make me watch fucking commercials, at least if they put them on a DVD I can skip ahead.

While the price of movies have come down from $13.95-$10.95, it still costs $10 for small popcorn and small pop.

How about $10.95-$12.95 for meal combo at KFC but in the mall, it's about $5.99-$6.99.

I used to enjoy the hell out of going to the movies but have completely lost interest over the last several years. All the technocrap is just that--crap! I have no interest in having my senses overloaded by sounds, explosions, fright, etc. so I just stay away. Besides, when my S/O goes to the movies with her girlfriends I get a chance to step out!

shitty scripts with the same big grin stars over and over.
A remake of Bad News Bears? Are they completely out of new ideas...and the Honeymooners...so bad it was insulting.
$10 ticket, 6.50 popcorn, 3.50 for a Pepsi out of the machine, 4.50 for a pretzel, all to see a crappy movie.
Now you are supposed to see a movie just because it has some brand-name star, not because it's good.

I still go to the movies, but only the ones that I deem to be "can't wait to see" or need to be experienced in a theatre. Otherwise I don't go for the following reasons:

Most films being produced today are lacking in originality, creativity or entertainment value - more bluntly, most of it sucks warm shit through a small straw, and are made solely for the Ritalin generation. This is an age where ass-stains like Michael Bay are allowed to make summer blockbusters and every 3rd film is a remake of an old movie or TV show.

And speaking of the Ritalin generation, that brings me to another major problem - these young, spoiled self-centred asshats who talk or use their cell phones during the film, or parents who bring their screaming, diaper-soiling brats into the theatre. Either hire some ushers...not 16-year-old nerds or frail grannies, but brick-shithouse bouncers...to enforce the rules, or some of us will take things into our own hands. Unfortunately, ushers were only viable in the days of one-screen theatres...with these 16-screen multiplexes on every corner, it likely wouldn't be financially viable for the theatre companies unless you want to see ticket price hikes.

Other options and ideas...cell phone airwave blockers; babies room with enclosed glass; an airline-style first-class area with an usher but a slightly higher ticket price so that people such as myself can enjoy the cinematic experience above and away from the noisy unwashed peasants.

Most Hollywood movies are targetted at a shallow audience. I don't know why, but for some reason Hollywood either assumes you are stupid and can't appreciate anything challenging, or just wants to make you stupid.

The last movie I saw was "The Downfall" (also known as "Der Untergang") - a German movie about the last days of Adolf Hitler. It was fascinating, thought provoking, and utterly amazing the likeness (facial and acting) to Hitler. Jewish critics complained it showed that it sympathized with Adolf Hitler. I was impressed that the director had the guts to show the frail human side of a monster.

I saw it 3 times, each time I came back with a different but high appreciation for it.

One great movie I saw was "Raise the Red Lantern" - a movie from China about a man and his four wives. Aside from the beautiful cinematography, it was a tragic story. I saw it probably 6 years ago, and to this day its effect is unforgettable.

I can't say these things to the 99% of the countless Hollywood movies I've seen in my lifetime.

1. Because the sound and picture quality at all theaters SUCKS compared to a properly designed home system. The sound is a compromise to make it sound acceptable for 400 seats, not optimized for 2, the way I like it. The picture quality after the first run is terrible, with all the lines and static and snow... it's distracting and takes away from the movie experience. I seek perfection in picture and sound quality... anything less and I can't enjoy the movie. it's a distraction that makes me call 1-800-CALL-THX to report the incidents that distracted from my enjoyment.
2. All the stupid advertising and trailers they make you watch (I timed it and it was 20 friggin minutes before the damn movie started.. it's always at LEAST 10 minutes, usually 15 on average)
3. Turning off all the lights to force you to watch the PRE advertising (BEFORE the trailers) instead of reading some decent movie magazine article (which they effectively "force" you to read at home by turning the lights off).
4. People saving seats in a PACKED theater for people coming into the movie LATE.
5. The crowd noise from people talking... cell phones aren't really a problem these days.
6. How the theaters think that "$16" for 2 popcorns, 2 hotdogs, and 2 drinks is considered a "value meal deal" ... LMAO on that one.

I rented that Johnny Depp movie about JM Barrie -- Finding Neverland? --- and it started out with a car commercial that I couldn't skip. I complained to the video store. They didn't care.

The so called slump is just media horseshit. Attendance is down compared to last year only because so many church folk went to see Passion of the christ when otherwise they only see 1 movie per decade. The numbers are up compared to 02 or 03.

People don't go to the theatres because they are investing their time and $$$ in buying or renting videos and DVDs. Right now, only about 15% of Hollywood's income comes from theatre admissions.

All the talk of how crappy Hollywood movies are today leads me to ask a few questions.

1. What movie won the Best Picture Oscar instead of Citizen Kane?
2. Name the other Best Picture nominees that year.

Hollywood has always put out more crap movies than good, but who really remembers a movie like Hawmps(saw it as a kid, just saw it in the bargain bin and was reminded of it) compared to Star Wars? Just go to IMDB and punch in any actor who's been around for awhile, and see how many movies they've made you've never heard of. As an example, I read once that John Wayne made 200 movies in his career. Except for a hardcore fan most people might only be able to name a dozen or so.

I used to go to the movies very regularly, usually at least once a week. I broke down and saw Sin City in the theater, just because I'm an ex comic book geek. Before that it was Spiderman 2, because I had a gift certificate that was about to expire. Before that, it was LOTR Return of the King. Between the price (can somebody please explain how getting rid of matinee and cheap Tuesday is "better serving the customer" like the corporate asshats say), general crappiness of too many films, and the fact I can wait a couple of months and watch the DVD with the deleted scenes, bonus extras, etc., why bother going to the theater?

Admission for two: $30
Popcorn for two: $6
2 Pops: $8
2 bags of M&M's: $8

Renting a DVD, not even getting half-way through before you start making out and wind up f**king like minks on the living room floor: Priceless

PERB is full of Crybabies

This is hilarious.

Somebody made noise next to me. Wha Wha

If she was 23 and hot and giggling with her friend you would think it was kind of fun. You wouldn't be complaining about fighting over armrests. Well not until you tried to ask her out and she laughed at you. Of course then the hot girl would become an Ugly Bitch.

Funny how that works.

If the theatre experience sucks leave and get your money back (they will refund you). If you are worried about it being too crowded, go to a later show, or an afternoon show when there are 4 people there.

PERB movie goers sound like a bunch of whiny sociopaths, but of course this is reinforced by the ability to pay a women for her to pretend to like you. It kind of reinforces the sense of entitlement that some were bitching about in relation to the incosiderate.

Oh the hypocrisy.

This is better than a $14 movie.
