Is it just me, or do you all need to log in under your user name just to browse the boards?

I used to be able to browse without logging in and would log in if I wanted to post.

Sirlickheralot - unfortunately I can't read the explanation since I don't have a TERB username.... are you able to post it here?

This is a new thing

I think that the powers that be are clamping down for some unknown reason. My browser...Netscape 7.1, is set to automatically delete cookies after each session, and up until this morning I could also browse W/O logging in. Maybe the Mod will see this thread and offer us an explanation ??

This is what Fred had to say on TERB about this matter.

We are just doing our part to save electric power ( eliminate lurkers who have nothing to contribute ) .

Also...

To extend from Kev's post, I think the reason why PERB is also cut back is because the physical server we are on here is likely the same one TERB is on in Toronto. Whatever happens there affects this forum as well.

Until power is normal again in the East, I believe Fred Zed will be running things as members only.....like he was quoted "doing our part". ;)

Sorry about that guys, I forgot that since lurkers can't see the posts anymore all the people without terb accounts wouldn't be able to see the explanation.

Actually Fred mentioned once that PERB and MERB are on a different server than TERB. I think the reason has more to do with encouraging people to sign up and post rather than just lurking.

Just a thought or two

Don't lurkers from all over the world use the board to help in deciding who to see? Then they might even post a review or comment. I would also imagine that the ladies who pay "hard-earned" money to be advertisers would be much happier if as many people as possible could check things out with no hassle. As for me, well I realize that I haven't posted all that much, but I'll try to be a good boy and comment more often. I don't really want to post just for the sake of it. I've toned down my adventuring a lot this last year, and mostly see old "friends" who've been reviewed already, or have decided to go real low key and discrete.

Actually, the idea was to encourage lurkers to sign up for accounts. Although we were successful in this regard
(219 new registrations compared to an average of 10 a day )
there is still no evidence that the new members are contributing any posts. Ah well.. at least we tried . :)

A computer question

If the server is on, doesn't it consume the same amount of power no matter how many hits it gets. This is not a confrontational question, just curious....

If you couple that with a requirement to contribute a minimum number of posts each month that could work to turn lurkers into perberts.
It certainly would, if we can get them to post in the first place.
Typically, a larger percentage of people on boards such as this one prefer to lurk. That is fine by me, as it boosts the hits to our advertisers' sites.

Never posted, had nothing new or relevant

As a former lurker I thought just seeing an advertiser would in a small way contribute to the board.

Zero sum.

There is a marketing department working hard to sign up the lurkers, but on the other hand there is a giant erasing machine that is erasing lurkers who don't post. Doesn't this sound like a zero sum game situation?
