In another thread someone mentioned hidden fees in a car rental. In a news report about car dealerships there were additional fees for the car, environmental fee, extra warranty, etc.

So in your experience what additional fees cropped up when you bought something (other than taxes).

I made a car sales inquiry recently, and yes, there were some extra fees (like "shipping fee", "premium paint fee" on every colour except black, and so on) when buying a car, that amounted to a couple thousand bucks for the car I was looking at. So looking at the advertised price in the newspaper etc., it was not accurate, and they all do this.

When you see these sorts of fees, that's just their way of raising the price without saying they're raising the price.

Same goes for "fuel surcharges" on everything from BC ferries, to deliveries, to airline tickets. Even airport improvement fees and so on are part of this lie. Does anyone think that a plane is even able to fly without fuel, as if fuel is some kind of extra bonus cost that airlines unexpectedly had to pay for? Of course not. Costs go up, prices go up, and the public shopuld see that true price reflected in all advertising - that's how it should work.

However, they all choose to play this ridiculous game of misleading all customers at all times. It's a scam, but the government allows it because the fraud is so widespread that if the government cracked down on certain businesses misleading about the true price, they'd be faced with an angry campaign from a lot of pearl-clutching business lobbyists, claiming that having to tell the truth would destroy their ability to do business.

Can you imagine going into some grocery store, buying meat, and then being charged a surcharge for it being refrigerated at all, or going to a restaurant and being told you must pay higher than the menu price because they issued you a knife, fork, and spoon to eat with?

No, nobody would stand for that shit. But for some businesses, there's this unwritten aura of bullshit that allows them to chop their costs up and make you pay for them piecemeal just so they don't have to tie their costs directly to their prices in their advertising.

Yes. It's called a $12,000,000.00 gift of our tax money going to Loblaws and the Weston family.

A few years back I got into a bit of a bind. The timing belt snapped on my VW Golf and the stealership said it could be replaced and it would be fine.Timing belt got replaced and it would not run as the pistons lashed the valves and the cylinder head needed to be rebuilt.I ended up getting a somewhat decent trade in on the car on a used Jeep Compass. It was financed and I knew the rate and ran it through a loan calculator the night before.Next day I show up to take care of business and during the course of doing so I see the monthly payment on paperwork and it did not jive with my calculation.

I asked if there was anything "added on" to which I was told that the fucking stealership had arbitrarily added on a 6 month/20,000 kilometer warranty for the tune of $4000 on top of the cost of the SUV.This un-asked for warranty added 35% to the cost.I said I did not want it and the salesman said it was standard practice.I then got terse and said I did not want it and I was told it was priced in.I then got downright fucking blunt and said "I dont want the fucking warranty and I am the customer and the customer is always RIGHT".The guy then changed his tune and redid the paperwork.

Had I not run the numbers the night before I would have got shafted for a useless $4000 warranty that was slipped in in a sneaky way.

Few things worse than buying a new car. I recently helped my mom buy a new vehicle. We found the model she wanted, the trim level and negotiated the price. We passed on warranty’s, undercoating etc.... Next day I sent her to the dealership alone to pay for and pick up the vehicle. The seized on their chance to exploit an old lady, put her in a business manager meeting, sold her a useless $4000 extended warranty and then gave her the wrong vehicle on purpose.

I was so angry, not only did they exploit an elderly lady, but to give her the wrong car was shocking. I only discovered it 48 hours latter when I noticed her car didn’t have a backup camera and aluminum rims. Just gross stuff. We got it rectified, but not without serious hassle. Entire industry is a sham.

I think you missed my point, in your rush to blame you-know-who. Fair point, but that's something entirely different.

I was not blaming anyone and your point was not lost on me. The fee is giving our tax money, a fee we contribute to the Government of Canada, to a company with net earnings such as Loblaws to buy refrigerators.

One might blame the Government.

One wonders if every corner grocery store could get the same consideration.

A 4000 dollar warranty, that if I'm taking you right........you'd be paying interest on with your monthly payments.
So more like a 5000 dollar stealership warranty?

I bought a new car three years ago - Ford. "Registration program: $385.00" "Administrative/documentation fees: $595.00" "BC tire disposal fee: $25.00".
When I bought a used car some years ago the one that really got up my nose was something like "Tire and rim insurance" It was around $450.00. i.e. if you ever had any tire problems, they would fix it. One of those things where nobody ever claims, of course. Gouging!! I would never agree to that again.

These are exactly what I meant. Only the tire disposal fee seems to have any actual purpose, but as a separate fee from the tire price, it still feels scammy.

You are close to the ball park on that and I as a consumer/customer sniffed it out and did not like it......there was a lot of loud noise to say the least.I think I saw 2 respective new car buyers leave the sales room and drive away.

In 2012 when I wanted to buy a new Hyundai Accent 4 door hatchback every dealer in Calgary wanted to fuck me for $3500 worth of "dealership" installed add-ons that are "installed" at the factory.Laser security package/block heater etc.Got sick of the crap and called a dealership in Edmonton. They hooked me up with the exact car I want that had a 6 speed manual in the color I wanted and at the sticker price.Hopped on a Red Arrow bus on a Saturday morning and I got the car I wanted without getting shafted for $3500 in extras......and the first thing I noticed as soon as I saw the car before I test drove it is that it had ALL of the extras. The salesman said "oh we through those in free of charge"...BULLSHIT.Every Calgary dealership wanted to act like they were doing me a favour by selling me a new car and to fuck me with up charging factory installed stuff. The dealership in Edmonton actually wanted to sell a car.

On a side note....when buying a new or used car from a stealership.....NEVER give them the keys to your trade in vehicle.....your putting your BALLS in THEIR hands.

I'm going to be in the market for another 1 ton diesel for hauling stock .... I can only buy North American, as anything else isn't heavy enough......and I'm not looking forward to the purchase.
I go into the sale with the attitude of....what's the best piece of brand new shit I can buy?
I've done em all....5 Dodges ,1 Ford, (and never again)...and 3 GMC's.....and I'm on the fence between GM and Dodge.
I know it'll come down to warranty and price.
The Ford stopped running after six months and they wouldn't stand behind it.....the Dodges ran forever because of the Cummins, but everything else around the motor rattled loose or blew apart....and the GMC's held together well, but are built for city driving, not gravel roads, as they are a little to low for heavy snow.

Difference between a blue collar city and a city full of rich executives, I guess.

Buy a Nissan Titan Diesel.....most likely better than you have owned before and have beaten the shit out of and it is not on your list of POS trucks.

Never judge wealth by the collar.
Half the time my collar is brown, no matter what shirt I'm wearing, if I wear work clothes to town, a truck salesman won't give me the time of day.
Black leather jacket, and shiny new boots...it's a different story.
As beautiful Catherine James once said to me," most people have no idea the wealth tied up in land ,equipment ,and livestock.
Your money may come harder than most , but it's just as good as anyone else's "

Would it haul 6 cattle over the connector ...or half of the shitshow highways we have in BC?
I will have a look at them, as I've never considered one.
I've owned one Toyota, and it was to small for my work truck, but I used it as a runner for everything else....it never quit on me, it just eventually rusted its way into the ground, and ended up as a parts truck.
Which in itself is amazing , because I kicked the living shit outta that poor truck.

( for the record ....never buy one of my used trucks, unless you just want it for target practice)
