Before the Olympics I remember vision Vancouver implying how much money all the business were going to be .
After the smoke cleared and reality hit ,
I asked around , loads of people who both worked downtown and owned businesses downtown , and with an obvious huge exception of the restaurants and hotels , as far as retail , brick and mortar etc , you could have shot a cap on through most downtown business for two weeks and you wouldn’t have hit a soul . Even most staff were sent home early ever day ok the count of it being so dead .
Whether is was because people who are coming to watch sports weren’t here to shop ,
Or if perhaps many were broke after tickets , hotel , restaurant and bar bills ,
All other businesses downtown suffered and made pretty. I’ve nothing for two weeks .
I spoke to a restaurant manager I know that runs a nice classy place just over the Granville Bridge. He said the only places making money are restaurants and pubs on Granville strip.

His business is down, but gave me an example that 1 pub/restaurant made $80,000 in one day during the Canada game.

This is what never gets mentioned by the promoters of these big events. Yes, it brings in a lot of money for some, but is also just redistributes the same pot of money to different places. So, the guy pulling in $80,000 in one day, has earned a substantial amount from what would have been spent in restaurants/pubs around the city and suburbs, or in other ways.

I have a relative who runs a major hotel and he said that this summer has been terrible for them in terms of occupancy. They have charged more so kinda made up some of it but FIFA was not positive for the place.

There were 1200 police deployed down town every day during all the hoopla. VPD spokesperson said that will drop to 400, "because the need isn't there."
Right - there was some a need during FIFA to make sure tourists were protected, but now we nonentities who paid for it, and just live here can go back to being punched and stabbed randomly, and watch addicts shoot up and shit in our doorways again.

I asked a couple police where they moved the homeless too and they both said nowhere .
It seemed like they believed it , but I don’t . They definitely pushed them somewhere where they were less of an eyesore during World Cup .
There’s like 90% less downtown

Where I work wasn’t hit too badly which was a pleasant surprise,
But during the Olympics , every downtown brick and mortar business that wasn’t a sports bar or restaurant basically made almost no money for two weeks .

I remember a buddy telling me his GF worked at Holts and they had all these very serious staff meeting that no one was allowed time off during the Olympics cause they were going to be “so busy” . As the city had more than implied .
When the time came the actual reality was everyone was sent home early every day cause Holts was like a ghost town .
She told him you could have shot a cannon ball through the store and you still wouldn’t hit a soul .
