Question ;

what does everyone think Vancouver is going to be like during FIFA ?

Mainly the DT core ( traffic , parking etc )

bit also will it have any substantial effect on the outside areas ,
Such as
Everything that is still Vancouver but not the burbs ( East Van , Kits , south Van , Kerrisdale , Shaugnessy etc ) ?

But also the suburbs , will it effect the population in those areas too ?

In my head I imagine the 2010 Winter Olympics , but hope I am wrong .

As I recall and enjoyed immensely, the 2010 Olympics was a blast. Yeah DT traffic was for the most part not allowed but the rest of the city was relatively quiet.
Fast forward 16 years of growth and I think those of us in the GVRD will have some frustrations.
Me? I have several trips planned and will be over at the Lake on the Island for a good part of all this.
Hoping it won't be a shit show.

It will be chaotic during game days and weekends. Me, personally, I have the luxury of skytrain close by which will be my method of transport if need be.

A bunch of rich fucks are going to get richer.
A bunch of dumb people are going to watch some very boring soccer.
And a month later things will go back to normal with minimal benefits to the city itself, just like the olympics.
The BC Sports Hall of Fame will hopefully return to its original status.

From the sounds of the news stories, it will either be very busy, or a bust. there's talk of 350,000 visitors, but hotels are saying bookings are lower than last year. Maybe they are all staying with friends and relatives or camping or something? It is apparently much worse in the US host cities, where there's some talk of it being a complete non-event. Lots of stories of FIFA's arrogance and stupidity. That organization needs an enema with a fire hose.

A friend of mine went for drinks with someone who's intimately involved with the planning of the event. The planner (who previously worked for VANOC) reportedly said "John Horgan must have known his cancer was returning and sold his soul to the devil, because some of the conditions promised to FIFA are outrageously over the top."

Buckle up buttercups...

Countires are also warning citizens of travelling to the US because of the Nazi police antics.. Which is leading to more travel being planned for Canada and Mexico... The only problem is, all the good games are in the US

Fifa already cancelled a whole bunch of hotel reservations they had and hotels are still over pricing their rooms... Few people I know run air bnbs and their booked solid with international travellers

I'll venture to say that the main reason for " unbooked hotels " currently is because of cost and nothing else. Over priced and hyped. Cash cowing the event.

Have to laugh at the cheerleaders saying there might be 350,00. Yeah, there might be pigs flying, too. Why would soccer fans travel all the way to Vancouver where 6 games are being played by outlier countries, for most to watch them on TV? The rah rah crowd never mention the thousands who avoid cities because whenever these disruptive events take place.

Fuck FIFA.
The president wanted a paid for motorcade.

They took an iconic building mural in downtown and painted over it.

Kicked out the BC Hall of Fame for 2 weeks and left the staff without compensation.

Way over budget for the city.

This will not be a positive legacy like the Olympics. Mark my words.

Before the Olympics I remember vision Vancouver implying how much money all the business were going to be .
After the smoke cleared and reality hit ,
I asked around , loads of people who both worked downtown and owned businesses downtown , and with an obvious huge exception of the restaurants and hotels , as far as retail , brick and mortar etc , you could have shot a cap on through most downtown business for two weeks and you wouldn’t have hit a soul . Even most staff were sent home early ever day ok the count of it being so dead .
Whether is was because people who are coming to watch sports weren’t here to shop ,
Or if perhaps many were broke after tickets , hotel , restaurant and bar bills ,
All other businesses downtown suffered and made pretty. I’ve nothing for two weeks .

The NDP are also spiky responsible for turning downtown into a shit hole by legalizing public drug use ,
Which I hear as now spread to kelown and Victoria ,
I’m wondering if the city will once again ship them all out to the middlw
of no where in order to hide the problem and deny. Plausibility instead of fixing anything .

Anyone paying 1k to watch a soccer game here? That seems like something I would not do even if I won the Mega Millions.
Ditto , but soccer is not my life .
Most popular US music festival tickets now go for $500-1200 US ,
And I see no fault in paying it,
Its more the food vendor prices that bug me .
