Do disinfectants help reduce the risk of STI transmissions after exposure, at least for bacteria STIs?
Examples:
  • a male receives a BJ from an infected partner, will the risk of contracting the STI be reduced by washing using antibacterial soap or even alcohol solution?
  • a female gives a BJ to an infected partner, will the risk of contracting the STI be reduced by using mouthwash?

I would like to know if there are studies about this and/or if the theory would support it
Thank you

Hi Kodiak bear3

Sorry about the delay in getting to your question.

Washings:

I have not been able to find any research or evidence that shows that washing after sex reduces your chances of getting sexually transmitted infection (STI).

In general washing the genitals after sex should not cause a problem. Just do not wash to much as I have seen people that have come to the clinic with broken skin from excessive washing, using strong chemicals or chemicals that are not supposed to be used on the skin.

This breakdown in the first protective layer of skin could increase your risk if you came in contact with infected fluids the next time you had sex.

Mouthwash:

Here is a link to a post in PERB where we discussed the use of mouth wash. I asked an oral surgeon if mouthwash can prevent sexually transmitted infections. There is a lot of information in the post but basically he said that mouthwash is not helpful in preventing sexually transmitted infections and you have to be careful not to use it too much.

Just let me know if this did not answer your questions.
