Don't the new model VW's come with a flower holder in the dash? That would be a clue. I mean, the sales guy says, " and right under the makeup mirror is a nifty flower holder. Plus the car colour is actually Magenta".
What possible question could you ask after that? Do you have one the colour of "Gun"??? C'mon!

Plus, ever notice "big" girls tend to drive white cars? Really, check it out. :D

Nina's former car makes me sing the line from that cool song by Heart,
"...oooooh! Barrrrrrrrrrracuda!"

Proof! -That Mini-Coopers are girlie gurlie?

I've owned one of these. The Miata is actually partly inspired from this. This is a late 60's Datsun Roadster. It's apparent from the replies that any compact sportscar, especially convertibles - no matter how cool - are considered by many to be "gurlie"...
Most people have seen, but rarely recognize these, as they are in fact rare. But most often these are mistaken for the Triumphs, Spitfires, and Italian Fiats that are similar. They handle great, and the power-to-weight ratio is excellent. 1600 & 2.0 OHC and OHV.

"Chick" Cars...

1) Mazda Miata
2) VW Beetle (new)
3) Mid-Late 90's Mustangs (V6 variety only)
4) Austin-Mini (new)
5) Porsche Boxter
6) BMW Z3

No straight guy would be driving the first 2, the third only if it's V8, Austin-Mini's are cool old-school style across the pond
I think any SECURE straight guy would drive whatever car appealed to his aesthetic without giving A FUCK about other guys thought ! If he's secure and getting laid hats off !

Old VW Bug

I run into so many people that "used to drive a Bug," and many are male.

I think the vintage ones are fair game, cuz anyone that has put the time and money into restoration...isn't that a "guy thing?"

I LOVE the pic of the piggy-van! Hilarious. That's about the only vehicle I can pass on the highway. (1600 cc of pure putt-putt)

I like the '67 Mustang to own or to drool over. I saw a new Mustang the other night and it was so hot looking - just like the vintage ones. Mmmmmmmm.
I just bought myself one of them 2010 grabber blue 'Stangs and it is the best damn thing I ever did! So much fun to drive. Any ladies who want a ride, let me know

That Datsun Roadster reminds me of the Sunbeam Tiger....pretty amazing power to weight ratio in that car as well with the small block V8.

The Lotus Position

Niiice. It looks like a Miata, too!
And/but anything with the name 'Lotus' sounds sexXxy...

Note about the Datsun Rodster. LoL, they also called it a "Fairlady"!!!
They stopped production in 1970 to build the popular 240Z.

Yes, the Sunbeam Tigers are cool too.

I bought my first Datusn Roadster because I was infatuated with a redheaded co-worker who had one.
But my main fave of that style then, was the Triumph TR-6, with its big-wheels-style, 6 cyl engine, and stylish wood-dashboard.

This is what happens when certain Domme "chicks" leave their "put-put's" unfixed?
- or maybe this is true suburban camoflague? Imagine leaving it this way and driving it around town!

Set the Sunday afternoon Scene:
Shouts from in front of the TV set to wife, beer can in hand:
"Honey, it's your turn to mow the car!"

No straight guy would be driving the first 2, the third only if it's V8, Austin-Mini's are cool old-school style across the pond - the new ones are just too yuppy, Porsche Boxters - if you have that kind of coin a guy would be driving even a base model Carrera, and Z3's... no power, no go, with the exception of the M3 Roadster.
So I'm gay now eh?

I just got back here from being banned cuz I didn't see any reason to celebrate "our diversity" & now you THE premier authority on all that is straight & he mannish are calling me gay?

Funny - I didn't see a Corvette on your list there?
Yet it used to have a 6 cylinder in it? (early C1's)

I used to drive a C4 Corvette which had been given the blank check treatment at California Corvette Specialty.
The one I drove had 430hp from a balanced LS1 with rollers larger throttle body, handling mods, high torsion read end with beefed up carrier beam & aero kit like this one:

All that said I prefer my current MX5 (Miata) to the vette because it is much better built, I am more impressed with the engineering of the car as a whole & pound for pound the Miata is a better car - PERIOD!

Sure the vette was insanely fast, brutally powerful & a real eye catcher...
but - it was also insanely expensive on insurance, maintenance & gas.

In comparison the Miata is damn near bullet proof handles as good factory stock as the modified vette & is cheap to own.

People in their Mustangs & Camaro's may snicker when I pull up at Rivers Edge Road Course but when I pass them through turn 2 & 3 they begin to have some respect.

What about Jay Leno - do you think he's gay too?

It's all about less being more. I like the Miata because it's the only sports car in which they haven't used horsepower to solve all the problems. With almost every other car, when they have trouble with it, or it just isn't selling, they just add gobs of horsepower to it.
'You've got the Mercedes Coupe moving a little slow? You come out with CL65 with 604 HP. Bad handling? Put a Hemi in it.'

With the Miata, that doesn't really seem to be an issue. Although the horsepower's gone up a little bit over the years, it's one of the few cars you drive where horsepower really doesn't seem to be the issue.
It's one of balance.
Because cars are so powerful now, there aren't many cars that need to use all the power all the time, to keep it in boil. When you drive a new Porsche or Corvette, or any of those cars, anything past a third throttle to a half throttle, you're in jail already. With the Miata, you can whip the gear box around, bring the ass end around and slide it a little bit and have a great deal of fun with it.

Both the RX-8 and the Miata are the best-balanced car in the world. They just seem to fit exactly right.
I think may experts will tell you, and I think this is something not many super car owners will admit, but I will admit, I think the Mazda's got the best gearbox of almost any car produced.
It's extremely short, you never miss a gear. It's extremely predictable. Click click click, Click click click. And the fact that you use it a lot makes it enjoyable. You feel connected to the car.

A manly car would be a 1969 Mustang, or any of the Brand new Mustangs. The Mustang went through an embarrassing phase in the 80's, but its back to being a very beefy car, mmmm:p
Yes a BEEFY car it is.
My roadster weighs 2200lbs & can pull 0.93g on the skidpad with street tires. (factory)
The Mustang GT on the other hand weighs 3400lbs & can only manage 0.84g.

MAZDA MIATA's...

Definatly "chick cars", yet I only ever see middle aged men drive them. Everytime i see this, I laugh.
Yup!
That's me!

Bet you wouldn't laugh after I pass you on the track though!
:D

The Mazda MX5 IS a Miata.
I had one of the first that got to Vancouver in 1990..
Red...

and yes, very much a chick car, but amazingly high power/weight ratio.. and handling that was quite impressive.. I miss that car so much!

I put 200,000 kms on it in 2.5 years.
I loved that car.. it was so ME at the time.. today I'd rather drive a Boxter.. not as much a girl car, but after driving a Porsche, I see the value in spending more.

xoxo
Nina
Miata's have a reputation as being second only to the Toyota Corolla & Honda Civic when it comes to reliability.

I routinely see people who have over 300,000kms on their original motor & it still runs great!

Here is some fun info:

Power to you for liking your Miata, but to quote that the Miata is
the "best balanced car in the world" from a biased Miata website
seems laughable to me. Even comparing it to similar vehicles in
its engine class...

2009 Mazada Miata MX-5
Engine size: 1999cc
0-60 : 6.9
1/4 mile : 15
Slalom : 64.9
Skid Pad : .86
Price as testedn (base price) : $29,170 ($26,350)
http://www.edmunds.com/mazda/mx5miata/2009/testdrive.html

2008 Mini Cooper S
0-60 : 6.7
1/4 mile : 14.7
Slalom : 67.4
Skid Pad : .86
Price as tested : $25,220 ($21,200)
http://www.edmunds.com/mini/cooper/2008/testdrive.html
*** cheaper than the MX-5 with better pickup and handling.

2008 Lotus Elise
Engine size: 1796cc
0-60 : 4.9
1/4 mile : 13.3
Slalom : 72.4
Skid Pad : .96
Price as tested: $54,500 ($63,920)

* this car is crazy to drive with the traction control off.

Heck, it can't even lay claim to the "best balanced car for its price range",
let alone "best balanced car in the world".

SO you're four to five stats per car prove your point? You don't even have the weight distribution. Also you really need to ad in the older models of the Miata before they went "luxury" as that is what most people are referring to. They had Skid pad results closer to .90. It is easily the best balanced car in it's price class and definitely in the top 3-5 overall.

And, the car you are comparing it with is...NOT A CONVERTIBLE.

Little tip. You only have to follow the attached links if you want to compare more numbers... ;)
Why the heck do I need to compare weight distribution for?
Doesn't it ultimately contribute to the overall pickup and handling numbers?
Picked the 2008/2009 models as comparison since my assumption is that
car makers have a tendancy to improve the product as it matures.
Besides, the Edmunds review site only keeps track of current models, so that could
be have been a little hasty of me... :p The MX-5 might still be best of its class/price,
but to assert that its the best in the world when it comes to handling sounds
far fetched to me.

For the price the OLDER Miata's are definitely the best handling cars in the world. Great weight and weight distribution, RWD...excellent. Compare that with a heavy FWD Mini and I'm sorry but despite numbers it is just not as good a handling car. Many products DO improve over time but it depends what you consider an improvement. The Miata has consistently gotten heavier and more "luxurious". It is not the barebones sports car it once was. Just look at auto-x results and see how many stock Miata's (in stock class) are above the mini or any other car.

I DO agree that the newer Miata's are NOT the greatest handling sports car for the money and I would put the Elise or Exige up there. But with the old 1990~ definitely.

Did a little more research and you are right! :p
The numbers for the earlier models ARE off the charts.
Heck, my sister had a 97 in high school and I do remember it being
like a go kart. (not a lot of confidence when it comes to survivability
in a serious accident though). That's the reason why she sold it.
Guess that is the reason why the newer models are heavier.... :D

Still not the best balanced car in the world, though. ;)

At least our opinions have neared a little. Also something to take into account is that if you put a little money into the Miata it will KILL the mini. Let's say you take $5K for each car and you can put it into suspension and wheels/tires. You can get wheels/tires cheaper for the Miata (it can run smaller sizes/lighter and cheaper) and it is far cheaper for suspension components so you can do more for the money. A miata with good spring/shock or coilover combo, some sticky tires and sway bars/ chassis bracing will dominate almost any other car.

Anyways, I think we are both right to a degree and I DO agree that the new car is definitely NOT as good as the old one and that there are a few comparable cars.

p.s. Nina rocks!
