I am sure we have all had this happen to us.

You are sitting back in front of TV, or having your supper etc and someone knocks at your door. It is one of those unwanted people with a scripted sales pitch.

Last night it happened at around 7-55 pm!! It was a young girl from Unicef!! Number one I don't want anyone at my door asking me for donations, Shaw or Telus trying to get me to sign a three year contact.. or trying to sell me three vacuum cleaners for the price of one. Secondly, there has to be some kind of time that these people have to observe. It is already 8 PM for goodness' sake! People who live in apartments probably don't have to face these people.

Almost all the time I don't open the door if I know it is a salesperson. Alternatively, if I open the door, I just tell them thanks but no thanks. Only time I don't really get upset is if it is kids selling cookies etc and I make sure I buy them because I have kids too.

Last night I had a sleazy third party natural gas salesperson knock on my door trying to sell me on fixed price natural gas....I reminded him that everyone who had signed these contracts, when there was the big push after gas was first deregulated, ended up way overpaying. He had no idea what I was talking about. I would never sign a contract at the door.

I got scammed at the door a long time ago.

Two women had impeccable ID from a well known charity on lanyards. Next thing I saw was their pics in a local paper being wanted by police.

Forever more I only contribute to any charity direct to their website.

I don't even reply to anyone else knocking at the door to buy services etc

I used to host a monthly poker game for pooners. It was a good thing actually.I would make a pretty damn good dinner and we would enjoy a sociable meal and then play poker( I even had a couple of SP's stop in for a social hello if I had hosted them for my own selfish sexual desires) and the door was always unlocked.I had one guest/friend show up and I was busy in the kitchen putting togeather the individual beef wellingtons and the doorbell rang and I asked him to answer the door.He did so and I asked who it was he said "it is a Just Energy salesman" and I responded "tell him to FUCK OFF and slam the door in his face or you dont eat".....I promptly heard a loud FUCK OFF and and even louder slam of the door.We actually had a running joke about it all night though dinner and the poker game.

If you are a friend or welcome guest I have no problem answering the door.....not so much for any type of solicitor of services etc.

It’s a tough gig, I’ve been there and made pretty good money. Be kind. Door-to-door workers encounter every kind of person from every walk of life and have to assess how best to proceed with their pitch, not knowing what kind of day that person has had. I was told every curse word in the books but also met some amazing people.

When I was working we went from 10am-9pm. Same as telephone sales. God, I don’t miss those days!!

I once answered the door when there was a Jehovah's Witness there, while wearing my Dayglo Abortions shirt, brutal music blaring in the background.
Between that and my sullenness (not rude, just clearly uninterested), they never came back. They probably thought I'm going to be burning in hellfire. Of course, they think that about everyone, don't they?

Once in my youth I did Census work. It was hell sometimes, mostly because of all the door-to-door salespeople & charity salespeople & scammers that have people conditioned to be suspicious.

Speaking about charities, thats one place I don't like to donate. I've seen the CEO's and their huge salaries, and kids are still starving to death. My mom told me the other day, let the movie stars and rich people donate to them, I'll only give my money to the actual needy person in their hand. My mom used to have money taken from her paycheck going to one of these charities, so I can see where she comes from. If I see the salvation army guy during Christmas, I'll be tempted and do end up giving...even though I don't agree with their beliefs. I just can't help it :( I am a sucker :faint2::pout:

And the door to door thing, its annoying! But I also try to get cookies, they actually have really good cookies and chocolates. One time, I was staying with my dad and he's a little crazy in the head, has some mental illness, and he would allow the Jehovah's to come inside, and he'd sit there for hours debating with them and asking them all sorts of questions, he would bring up Islamic stuff and they would try hard to turn him over to their sides. Nowadays I always get mail from them asking for money lmao.

Don't get much of that anymore, not since I got the dog....been great in public spaces, still protective as hell around the house. Had one guy go on about having a vicious dog, he shut up real quick when I actually came outside with the dog and headed him off the property....stopping only when we got to the fence line where I pointed out the the No Trespassing signs. At that point he clued in that if the dog had been outside, as he is at times this would have been a very different situation.

Oh yes, those J's Witnesses... they are like bad diarrhea ... just when you think you have had your last painful dump ... another one making its way thru your intestine ..

Big sign right beside our door. Blah blah , no salesman, no this, no that, if I don't know you by name,... DON"T RING OR KNOCK.
If by chance one does, I open the door, say nothing, point to the sign & close the door.

Did you just say .... Be kind to them?? Next time I will make sure I only use verbal abuse on them.

Till 9 pm .... interesting..... how considerate of ...... these people... many people are having a quiet moment with their family or .. getting ready to get it on .. and you hear knock on the door.....
"We are offering free pencil if you order Shaw cable plus two vacuums, one cow, two years donation to Unicef, World vision donation, that will be charged to your credit card ... oh by the way, my uncle jeff also does window clearning.. would you like to sign up for lawn treatment while you are at it?"

Yup, lots of reasons there for me to be "kind" to these...... people.

If I saw you at my door I would most likely open it, buy whatever you are selling, then explain to the Mrs what I just did and why.
Sucker for a beautiful lady.

I have thought about it, but I don't want to discourage neighborhood kids from selling crappy chocolate bars for $2 each .. !!

If by chance you greeted people like that with a bucket of water or turned the garden hose on them suddenly you are the ASSHOLE......the ASSHOLE who is besieged in his own home.

As a kid in Calgary I used to shovel sidewalks after dinner during the freezing cold winter months.I did it after 6 and had to be home by 9.Cant say as I EVER got a rude response to me knocking on the door or ringing the bell as I was offering a well intentioned direct form of service that saved people the chore of shoveling the sidewalk in the cold after enjoying dinner.9 times out of 10 I got the job for the meagre price of $1 or $2 if it was a lot of work and I think a lot of people liked my moxie.I dont see kids doing that these days.

Yes, be kind. It's really not that hard to do.
