I have a serious question about perbatory ?
Can you be sent there for petty sqaubbles and can one ever get out ? or is it permanent ?

I'm not speaking from experience on Perbatory but would surmise based on years of watching the banning patterns; one may receive :

Warning pm from mods to cool it (both parties). Directed to put each other on ignore lists.

Infraction with points (additive and X number get a free ticket to Perbatory.)

Usually a week to start.

Repeat same behaviour and ignoring mods; not such a good idea and much longer banning.

Challenge the Mod or ignore directions again. Most likely 6 month or longer if they are feeling generous. Possibly permanent banning.

Thing is it all may be a new Perb with the passing of Fred Zed. Admins have the final say but again, it's not a good idea to challenge a Mod.

Ok this one has played itself out. I will chat with Jess about it, but in the end, it will likely come down to a time commitment thing, I simply don't have the time to maintain a perbatory properly, we don't have that many active mods and the board is very busy! Thanks to all who responded.

Thanks to BBB, his summary is pretty spot on. We always try to use progressive discipline, giving people the chance to correct their behavior. Only a very small list of things will result in an immediately lengthy or permanent ban, outing personal info or medical allegations and returning with a new handle after a previous ban are the main ones that stick out. Most of the time, a PM will be the first you hear from us, then an infraction or even two, then a short ban, then longer as you don't seem to get the point.

A special note: When we see a new handle, particularly from a TOR or VPN IP address, that is trolling hard right off the bat, we will often just ban them outright. They clearly are gaming the board system and have nothing to offer of any value. Most often, this is the vehicle of choice for banned members to try to slip back in to the board. The benefit of the doubt is not given in these cases, based on experience, removing the troll (and deleting their posts so as to discourage them since all they want is a reaction) is the better choice.
