Robyn Benson on life-support as husband awaits her C-section
B.C. woman declared brain-dead, is 27 weeks pregnant with fetus growing normally

A community is rallying to help a 32-year-old Victoria man facing an almost unimaginable set of circumstances as he awaits his first child's entry into the world.

High school sweethearts Robyn and Dylan Benson were married last July, after dating for 16 years.

Hundreds of people have contributed to a fund in support of Dylan Benson, whose pregnant wife Robyn suffered a medical emergency after Christmas and was declared brain-dead.

She remains in a B.C. hospital on life-support until doctors feel the fetus is viable enough for them to perform a caesarean section.

Benson says his unborn son was just over five months along and growing normally when Robyn complained of a headache and collapsed on Dec. 28.

"She was non-responsive. I tried to call her name and stuff but nothing would happen," he said.

Rushed to hospital, staff determined that she had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, and that damage was irreparable. She was declared brain-dead the next day.

"I didn't understand because I just didn't think that was a possibility," he said.

In line with his wishes, hospital staff are now trying to keep her alive seven more weeks, until the fetus is 34 weeks old and has a better chance of survival outside the womb.

I listened to CBC radio interview him. The fact that he stated that the day the child is born will be the happiest day in his entire life and the saddest day in his entire life as his wife would be taken off life support within minutes of the birth just choked me up. I can't imagine what he is going through. I will certainly be contributing to this fund and hope others will too.

Baby born to pregnant, brain dead Victoria, B.C. woman; she passes away

A Victoria, B.C. woman who tragically suffered a brain hemorrhage when she was 22 weeks pregnant has died, but her son, Iver Cohen Benson was born and is doing well.

Dylan Benson made a post to his Facebook account Monday night, saying that Iver was born Saturday night. He also says that on Sunday his wife Robyn Benson died. He called her the “strongest and most wonderful woman” he had ever met.

Here is the update posted to Dylan’s Facebook page:

Dear friends and family,

It is with a heavy heart but also with extreme proudness that I am posting this update…

On Saturday evening, my beautiful and amazing son, Iver Cohen Benson, was born. Iver is healthy and is the cutest and most precious person I have ever met. As to be expected, it will still be a bumpy ride for he and I as he continues to grow under the care of the wonderful staff at the hospital.

On Sunday, we had to unfortunately say goodbye to the strongest and most wonderful woman I have ever met. I miss Robyn more than words can explain. I could not be more impressed with her strength, and I am so lucky to have known her. She will live on forever within Iver, and in my heart.

Thank you to each and every one of you for your love, your kind words, and your support during this incredibly difficult time.

Robyn had been brain dead after she came down with a crushing headache one day at the couple’s Victoria home. Dylan went out to get some Tylenol for her, and when he returned, Robyn was unconscious on their bathroom floor, but still breathing. Despite attempts to revive her, doctors discovered that blood had leaked into Robyn’s brain and that she would never wake up.

She was declared brain dead by doctors and had been kept alive for the past six weeks until Iver was delivered via c-section Saturday night.

Dylan started an online fundraising campaign to help raise money for living expenses. He has so far raised over $144,000.
