I Like my Garmin

I don't actually know anything about that particular Garmin model, but I like my Garmin IQue M5 OK. The only major complaint I have is that the windshield suction mount doesn't hold consistently. The one in Gravitas' picture seems to have a fairly similar suction mount.

Another issue might be that if one travels in California and some other states, having anything mounted on the windshield is not legal.

I am also looking for info on the Nuvi, as I have been debating what to purchase... Nuvi 360 or the Streetpilot 2820..... I had the 2610 and I loved it, until some wanker stole it...... Ok which one of you has it?

http://www.garmin.com/products/sp2820/

I think I will go see the distributor next week to compare both, and finally make the purchase. Gravitas, thanks for reminding me.

I don't know about the rest of you, but when the little head is running the show, I need all the help I can get. The other day I was heading off for a massage. Thought I was being super-systematic. Got onto Translink's web site to plot my route. Used my Garmin to locate the address. And I still got on the wrong damn train!

I use my trusty Alienware laptop with a GPS receiver myself. I like having more of the map displayed. Multiple maps even.

I'm looking at this as a replacement to the Quest 2 I currently take with me when travel....it seems to be full of all sorts of options (bonus), including an MP3 player that doesn't need an FM transmitter (bonus) and is very compact (bonus)

I have a Nuvi since January. It's fabulous. I've used it all over North America. PM me if you want more details.

I believe the other state is Minnesota but not really a problem since I picked up the dash mount kit and a swack of temporary adhesive disks which should work like the cat's ass in rental cars.

I was interested in the nuvi as a GPS to have packed in my briefcase (which incidentally is large enough to hold a 6 pack) so compact size was a paramount feature. If I were to look at a unit for a more permanent solution I'd probably be inclined to go the 2820 route.

Not sure where you live but if in Calgary check out GPS Central. Even if you're not from Calgary check out their prices as they are very competitive and customer service is awesome.

I picked up the 360 this afternoon and LOVE it. Its amazingly easy to use, unreal ability to acquire satellite signal and features kick ass. I look forward to my next trip to play with its location based services :)

So it's almost been a month Gravitas... how is your Garmin Nuvi? Has it been a fairly reliable GPS system? Would you recommend it?

H@W,

I've taken a couple of trips within Canada and the US since getting the nuvi and it kicks ass! I was a little concerned about the touch screen display as a means to navigate the features (I prefer fixed buttons) but have to admit that the technology works well and even for someone with average sized man hands its easy enough to use even while driving (no safety lectures please, I only play when I'm stopped at a light). The 3D map view is pretty damn cool and provides a much more intuitive experience when looking at the map. Aside from the built in software Garmin really has nailed the rest of the design and packaging:
-it uses a SD card to store MP3 files and plays in their native format (something that the ipod doesn't do which is currently causing me grief at the moment)
-charges/synchs with a standard USB mini B cable so I don't have to carry anything device specific (I fucking hate manufacturers who have some specialized cable for their POS), also handy since I can use the same car charger for the nuvi that I use for my blackberry
-all sorts of mounting accessories available....in particular like the temp. adhesive disks as they stick well when mounted in a rental car but can still rip off with no real grief or damage
-its small....with the GPS, car bracket, a few extra disks I can fit it into a small eagle creek accessory bag and tuck it into my briefcase

I'd give it a 9/8/10

hey Gravitas!

I finally made my purchase ysterday of the Garmin 2820, I used to have the 2610, and so far I love it, just getting used to the new menu, and some new functions. I was going for the nuvi, but I was told that you can not store waypoints on the nuvi, which was something I really loved about the 2610.

I called GPS city, and asked them about the Gravitas special, an they raised the price 500$ WTF?

Any problems taking it on flights to the USA lately?

Right on! I'm thinking about the 2820 to keep in my truck full time. I tried the c550 but honestly not happy with it. It has a similar menu and environment to the nuvi but actually has fewer features which strikes me as odd since its designed as a more permanent model. Also doing something weird where it reboots itself every now and then when connecting to my dingleberry.

You can kind-of-sort-of add waypoints with the nuvi but its cumbersome. It excels at what it was designed to do, be a great compact GPS system when you travel thats easy to move from vehicle to vehicle.

Sorry brother, I was geo-caching my pecker with their receptionist Lucy and made an unwelcome deposit so I've been cut off.

No real problems with security other then my briefcase tends to get a fairly through going over with all the crap I lug around. Only complaint I have about the nuvi is that it won't operate with a standard mini-b usb car charger. If you turn it off it will charge but you can't run it while plugged in. Not a big deal but it is a slight pain in the ass since it means one extra cable I have to pack. Seems to be a common issue since I picked up a similar unit made by Mio (which incidentally is a piece of shit) and it has the same issue.

With my first unit, I had a problem in one of the US airports, as I passed the scanner, the portable dash mount that I use, (sand bag type thing) I guess it shows up on their scanner, the first guy was asking me to show him how it worked, but it took me 15 minutes of me trying to explain to him I needed a car lighter, to plug it in! Finally I guess his supervisor came by, and saw it, and knew what it was, actually was thinking about one himself, so he let me go, and suggested I pass with the electric pug that also comes with the unit, as it would save problem down the road. I have never been asked again been bothered again after that, from time to time they ask what it is, and they look at it, but at least they don't ask for me to start it like my laptop. I passed with my battery out of my laptop once, O BOY it took 20 minutes of questions to pass US customs.

I am happy to hear you can carry it on the plane, as I don't like to bag check anything breakable or that I can't afford to have stollen in my bags.

I am still playing with this new 2820, it's like having a new girlfriend, she has all these new features, postal code look-up, you can enter a GPS location, dam, looks like I need to go for a road trip soon! I am telling you this is an great Gadget... wait, let me rephrase that (Company expense) this is a tremendous work tool!!!
