How is axing the tax bending over for big oil? Are we all to drive electric vehicles, ride bicycles to work or perhaps bring back the horse and buggy days? Are we to throw away our gas furnaces and resort to wood burning stoves to heat our houses?
dude, clearly you need to do more research on the topic.

big industry are the biggest target for energy conversion. this is where carbon pricing has the most immediate response and drives alternative energy supply chains.

personal transportation is a much smaller footprint. but since you mention it... how many electric vehicles do you see on the road today? how many did you see 10 years ago? its happening.

also, electric cars rule. who needs a old gas guzzlin Ferrari when you can have a Nevera.

Electric vehicles don’t do anything for me. Hopefully I’ll never be forced to buy one by the government .

the government is not going to force you... the market will. the government only creates incentives to push markets in directions that are in the best interest of everybody.

lots of people refused to give up the horse and buggy. but i get that a lot of people are very resistant to change... except that change is the only absolute in life.

what we suffer from is big oil and their big money pushing their weight around doing what they can to stifle alternative energy sources. alternatives that drive energy RESILIENCE.

Singh confronts protesters on Parliament Hill
I saw him walking down the hill towards Sussex Street in front of the Chateau Laurier. Naturally there were some clownvoy type assholes yelling paki slurs at him. I’m sure it’s a constant thing for him. Not surprised he’d snap.

Also saw JT’s motorcade go around the same corner. Unmarked Ford, armoured Ford, minivan and another Ford. By the way, they waited for the light to change to turn left onto Sussex.
Four vehicles.
Once upon a time way back when we saw Obama’s convoy in DC, jeezus what a sight.

We are so lucky to live here where politicians can usually walk around like normal people.

We set a mandatory target that all new light-duty cars and passenger trucks sales be zero-emissions by 2035

The above statement from the Liberal party looks like the government trying to force me to buy an electric vehicle, market has nothing to do with it.

I have worked in the oil industry for many years “big oil” is not the scary bogeyman you seem to think it is.

Yes, there wont be any used cars left on Jan 1 2035. You'll be 'forced' to buy an electric.

Meanwhile, here's a coal fired space heater to make you warm.

LOL! The market forcing a consumer into a (potentially) non-voluntary consumption choice due to govt regulation is in fact, the govt forcing it's will onto consumers/the market. Govt need not push markets (i.e. consumers) towards the "better mouse trap" - because the better mouse trap usually wins out anyways! Did the govt need to push consumers to buy iPhones? No. Someone (i.e. Steve Jobs and Apple) built a better mouse trap - and the market agreed it was a better mouse trap. Ergo, why Apple has 60% market share in smartphone sales in Canada, which in turn caused the death of Blackberry smartphones, LG smartphones, Nokia, etc., etc., etc.

Saying nothing for the fact that you're arguing out of both sides of your mouth. You stated in another post in this thread that " personal transportation is a much smaller footprint" (in regards to emissions contributions). So, apparently, personal cars don't contribute all that much to emissions, but at the same time, you think govt needs to push consumers into EV's for "the best interest of everybody." Sorry mate, that doesn't logic! Moreover, you also stated " electric cars rule" - which implies that EV's are the better mousetrap. So, in your mind, we need to put everyone into EV's to reduce emissions from personal vehicles that (by your own words) "is a much smaller footprint" so that the better mouse trap will win - which, would happen (over time) anyways because better mouse traps usually win! LOL

And further, we have a govt pushing EV's on Canadians (who are not ready, because of the sticker shock) - while at the same time implementing 100% tariffs on potentially cost competitive EV's from China. And again for what? So that (using your words) the govt can force people to do what is in "the best interest of everybody". So, in your mind, it is in "the best interest of everybody" to potentially buy EV's that they can't afford anyways, so that emissions from personal vehicles which are "a much smaller footprint" (from an emissions perspective) can be reduced! LOL

This is why govts shouldn't try to manipulate markets. They (the govt) want people in EV's. They give billions to VW, Stellantis, GM, Honda, etc., etc., etc. to sell us EV's many of our neighbours can't afford. All while taxing the heck (i.e. 100% tariffs) out of the cost competitive EV's made by BYD, et al. For what? According to you, this scheme is all in "the best interest of everybody". LOL This so called "EV strategy" is all about supporting the 150,000 auto factory workers and auto parts workers in this country. Unfortunately, Canadians purchase over 1.5 million new vehicles each year. Apparently, the govt hatched a scheme to give tens of billions to multi-billion dollar companies to support 150,000 direct jobs in Canada - at the expense of the greater than 1.5 million annual Canadian consumers of new vehicles. Support 150,000 people at the expense of 1.5 million - that doesn't math or logic! LOL

Exactly why Alberta banned investment in renewable projects as is ready to pay to clean up after the oil industry - cause they can compete without subsidy. Same goes for oil workers, how much wonk dust gets spent on propping up those jobs?

Both side of your mouth indeed.

I am not voting for JT this election although I did vote liberals in the last election. I am certainly not going to vote for Jagmeet Singh and his NDP. Jagmeet Singh is a puppet of this separatist movement in India (well, mostly in Canada really). Minority govts are often spineless and afraid to take some tough decisions. Having said that, JT lost my respect for many other reasons e.g. the truck convoy fiasco is a black mark on govt and law enforcement and the worst is senseless and unplanned immigration. Well, that's a topic for another day.

Having said that all, it was very disappointing to see someone calling Jagmeet Singh a 'corrupt ba****d'. It's one thing to disagree with someone strongly but to stoop to that level is just not Canadian at all. Good on him to turn around and face the heckler and this ball-less heckler turned into a p***y cat very quickly.

Next Federal elections will be very interesting, that's for sure. I hope we see some changes. I most certainly hope that the elections bring a majority govt.

Could add: The rigged economy of fiat currency born centuries ago with a tiny global population didn't or couldn't think about future repercussions. I questioned a blog of some of the most sophstacated financial posters for an alternative system. The best answer I got: a barter system. But how long sitting with a few live chickens on the sidewalk at Columbia & Hastings before you get the leg of beef you want.

well i agree that i'm somewhat talking out both sides of my mouth... while the market will help people make the choice away from increasing carbon output there is a big push in government policy that needs to get the market moving in that direction. the market takes over when the cost/benefit starts to kick in due to increased supply chain.

but, i'm afraid that manipulating markets is what government does and needs to do all the time. monopolies are really bad for the economy and government steps in every time. manipulating the bank of canada rate is manipulation of markets. restricting bad actors in investment is manipulating markets. grants for home insulation and heat pumps is market manipulation. etc etc. it goes on forever and we would have mayhem otherwise.

i totally agree with your take on the national auto industry. those fuckers have been looking for protections forever and all they've done is use that power to sell people more and more expensive vehicles. its disgusting. north american auto is dropping most of their small sedans. its going in the wrong direction just because consumers have been convinced that bigger vehicles mean bigger price tags. and they've dragged their feet on electric for decades... because electric vehicles simply don't represent as big a profit margin on after sales parts. there should be no chinese tarrifs! the north american auto industry needs a wake up call. auto workers here will build anything. its all about corporate profits.

except that he pushed through expansions to pharmacare and now canadians have dental coverage for children and seniors. he used his clout with the minority government to do so.

if the CCP is a better pick then state the policies that matter. i'm afraid the most vocal name callers just have mindless dislike for some personality.

Also look at the dealership lobby , those fuckers have been manipulating things for a long time. The preserved markups on cars and the sheer amount of market fuckery is crazy if your a free market proponent.

Its also not like BYD and other Chinese auto groups aren't subsidized or even state owned appendages. Its the Wal'mart school of business, undercut everyone for a while till they go broke then jack the prices.
