He did make the bonehead play in game 4 that tied the game, but one player does not win, or lose a game.I'm going to blame losing to Chicago on Willie Mitchell. His botched clearing attempt in game 4 led to the Martin Havlat tying goal.
After that it was all downhill. Lost the game, Series was tied 2-2 instead of a stranglehold going home at 3-1.
I still think Luongo is worth his salary in the new NHL. Got to lock up your star players before somebody else does.

True. I'll also admit that Luongo had the 1 of his worst, if not the worst, performance of his career in Game 6 vs Chicago.
But if I have to blame someone for the series loss, it'd be Mitchell and not Luongo.
Would you say the same when Cloutier let in the Lidstrom center ice goal?

Canuck management signed him to that contract because he is one of the best in the league in the defensive role. He is there to cover mistakes of the skaters in front of him.
There are 20 teams in the league that would jump all over the chance to sign Luongo at that contract.

I find it difficult...and so I decline to do so....to pay $70+++ to sit and watch a game...it is a game. I prefer to play the game rather than be charged for the right to watch.
Having said that, I love playing golf. And I will still pay big money to watch the best of the best do what they do best. Work it out Tiger...I want to see you in April...and I know you care!....lol.

However, aren't we debating the fact that Luongo's NHL salary is over-priced rather than the justification of the amount pro atheletes are paid?
Anyways, to beat a dead horse even more, Luongo is worth every penny, because I'd rather have him backstop the Canucks instead of play against him.
I think Luongo can steal a game for the Canucks, he's done so in the past. This year is not a good year for the team so far, but there's still a lot of the season left; and a large amount of road games, so I wouldn't be surprised if he stole a few games during that stretch.civic said:

Luongo and his peers are likely the TOP thirty goaltenders in the world. In that respect it would seem they're worthy of their salaries.

How dare anyone questions our resident hockey expert's opinion on Luongo? Until such time as he wins the Stanley Cup, Conn Smythe, Hart, Vezina and William M. if Lidstrom played on the Canucks and he finished the season with 60 points and won the Norris trophy would you argue the he deserves to be paid only 75% of the Sedins because he only had 75% as many points...
a fairer comparison would be to compare their salary to only the forwards on the team...
even than, that would be subject to further qualification, but that is beyond the scope of this board...
just as an aside, I once had a member of this board try to convince me that both Sidney Crosby and Eric Godard have the same probability of winning the Conn Smythe trophy because they both account for 1/20th of the roster...

I hasten to add he has it pretty good in Vancouver, as I would say he has about 99.9% of Vancouverite's heads stuck up his ass...
that argument is specious...(Btw, the Sedins eat up 25% of the team's Salary cap, yet contribute to half the team's offensive output. Even if you eliminated the points overlap, they would still contribute to 30% of the offensive. In that case a 25% cap hit is not a big deal; in fact, the argument can be made that it's quite a bargain.

It's quite obvious that the intangibles must be considered when assessing a player's true value towards his team. So since you brought it up, consider this. How do you replace two guys who combine for 160 points per season and are a combined +195 since they started their NHL careers 9 years ago? Vancouver is not a competitive team without them. I think most teams would gladly take on more than their combined $12.2M cap hit because they're going to significantly increase your odds of winning the big game.
The same applies to Luongo. His $6.75M cap hit is in anticipation of what he will provide your team one day. His value to the organization is beyond measure.
Conversely, one can argue that until these guys win the big game, they've got a lot to prove. The Olympics in Vancouver is a great start! Holy f*** am I getting excited!
Having said that, most teams out there wouldn't hesitate to pay more for those three guys because any one of them will truly increase your odds of winning that big game. You guys have all 3 of them. Stop complaining.

I don't want to get tied up in symantics or get into a pissing match. I am familar with the rule changes. But again, he plays a defensive position. All he can do is ensure a tie. He can't score goals in a shoot out. One of his team mates has to score. All he can do is prevent goals, not score them. One of the skater has to score for Luongo's team to win, dude.
