One thing Covid lockdown has done is make me realize there is absolutely no need for professional sports to take up much, if any of my time, ever again.

I never understood why people watched basketball. Back and forth, along the court, almost every play someone scores, mystery fouls and only the last two minutes actually meaning anything. Now add in being lectured by millionaire players, and nothing about the sport is enticing.

WNBA - Seriously? What’s next - the Women Watching Paint Dry League?

Ditto for pro football. They’re paid to play a sport, not lecture fans (and only one voice is allowed) on politics, race, finance, architecture, religion, or anything else. CFL had some appeal, but the over-hyped NFL was boring. The showboating celebrations after every play like they just won the game, the trash talk, the marketing of everything under the sun. Buh bye.

Soccer? I used to be a fan, but it really is tedious.

Hockey. I sometimes enjoy watching the Canucks lose, but between the greed, the politics and incessant rule changes, I’m done except for maybe the Stanley Cup.

Auto racing? Other than crashes, why?

Horse racing - exists just for betting, which is where the rest of pro sports is headed.

Olympics - The most corrupt group in the world, fleecing cities and states for billions every four years to sell Coca Cola, TV's and credit cardss. Oh, and some unknown athletes are put on display to justify the con.

Tennis, Skiing, Running, Cycling - All things I’d rather do, than watch.

Look at all that wasted time spent watching what amounts to nothing, really. Was I entertained? Maybe, sometimes. Other times I invested way too much energy and emotion in people that often showed utter disdain for their fans. So, now I’m done with them.

Might I suggest a much more sane, yet equally satisfying alternative?

You used to really piss me off CT, now I just feel sorry for you.
So sad to view everything in life in a negative manner.

Good luck to you, you will need it....especially living in Alberta!!
What was negative about it? I said I'd much rather be hiking, cycling, running or playing tennis than watching a bunch of whining, pampered millionaires, most who could care less about their fans. What's more sad, out enjoying life, visiting friends, or sitting at home, or in a bar cheering on some players you don't know, who would move to another city in a flash for more money, and has no interest, or investment in you?

Agreed. Entertainment shall remain just that, or die off. When I want a lecture, I don't watch the Oscars, or sports channel for it, I'd watch relevant commentary or political programming instead. Politics, forced re-education and virtue signalling has infected all aspects of life. I'm for one quite happy if evidence shows public appetite for this crap is starting to diminish.

If the CFL had some appeal to you, that's a whole different story on itself.... CFL is crap, will always be crap and hopefully will be done for after this year

I think 99% of the obesity problem coincides with society watching sports instead of doing sports.

How often do you hear someone say they are into hockey? They really mean they are into lying on the sofa stuffing their faces watching it on tv.

Critics, probally why Billy Crystal stopped doing the Oscars. Just too many critics.
As for sports in general, yeah the playoffs are something to watch. Over the fall time on weekends to watch sports. I found sports are hard to follow when you get busy doing other things... And really I don't miss them that much.
The problem today for me is acess. I don't have cable, there fore I don't veg on the couch and watch TV. I don't like pay for access for anything. example I won't pay for a channel suscription.
This is because I find everything is going that way. Microsoft Office, Video programmes, audio programs, Autocad programs etc are monthly or yearly suscriptions. Companies are going for the monthly suscription over the buy once product (every 3 to 4 years product advances - usually only software)... Reason is steady income. But cost the consumer alot more in the long run.
Back to sports, with the billions in TV contracts the players make more money now then they did in the 30 years ago. Kids instead of becoming doctors and lawyers are going for the quick cash as athletes. Whats more appealing to an young person, play sports, or 8 to 10 years of going to post secondary school to get a doctors degree (I think that the doctors are going tol putsmore into his schooling than those pro sports guys put into their sports.)....The other thing is age 20+ people are in school and trying to get jobs don't have time to play sports, or sports interfer with job/school etc.

But here I think CT is more of a high-lights fan. Not surprizing because all industry/people are into the "power-point/bulletins" to get main points across and not waste time.

But sports cover a major deal with all societies. People can discuss/argue/fight about the sports teams/ type of sport, and still don't feel the need to beat the bloody shit out of people that disagree with them... Now take those same conversations into religion, sex, politics and people won't let go of their ideaology, and usually end up in fights.

Maybe people are more versed in knowledge of sports then sex, politics and religion.

But as someone metioned above its better to get out and exercise then sit on a couch....

Care to elaborate?

Because I would rather watch the CFL than give the NFL even one second of attention. The NFL game is boring, what with the ability to run out the last 20 minutes of a game by endlessly taking a knee. Plus, it's an *American* league with no Canadian teams -- why would I watch or care about a league with no local rooting interest?

I for one enjoy both watching sports on TV (namely hockey), and getting out to do stuff like hike. Believe me, the Whiteshell in Manitoba is my playground.

I too find the NFL games at times slow paced and somewhat boring at times. Have seen many far more exciting CFL games. It irks me when people denigrate the CFL. Don’t like it, don’t watch or move to to US.

Not a big fan yet I understand the escapism element. Another way to have fun. Bring on the vR takeover

As a guy, I have always felt like a bit of an oddball as I have never had any interest in watching or playing competitive sports, although I do stay physically fit (excercise, weight lifting, cycling, walking).

It has been said that sports are a substitute for war and violence, so I suppose it does serve a useful purpose in society.

Oympic sports: javelin, discus, shot put, hammer throw, running, fencing, wrestling, boxing. yup war stuff.... ancient to modern still happening. Sports are a way of getting rid of aggression etc. by physical attivity.
I wonder if wenching was an activity back in the first olympics in Greece....
