For those in Vancouver, this is now in limited release, playing at The Park on Cambie. Very limited showtimes over the next few days. Then it'll play at The Rio on the 23rd and the 26th. I was hoping to catch it if I can.

Having seen both of the last two films posted in this thread, both are pretty solid. Anna and the Apocalypse was a lot of fun, and Into the Spiderverse was definitely a unique experience.

I also saw Green Book, the drama about the Italian who has to drive around a wealthy black piano player. It was a very balanced film with great performances. Definitely oscar bait.

I also checked out Default, a Korean drama about the financial crisis of 1997. Very similar to The Big Short, I knew nothing of the true events but it kept me informed and invested.

Also saw Boy Erased, very harrowing drama about a young gay teen who is forced to conversion camp and the stuff that happens behind closed doors. More good acting from all involved.

Still the best movie I've seen all year was AMERICAN ANIMALS.

No promotion, no stars, no suerheroes, but a fascinating, true story that came and went in a blink.

Search it out.

Not a movie, a 3-part BBC series that's true, but stranger-than-fiction is MRS WILSON. The lead actress is portraying her real grandmother.

Vice

I saw Vice yesterday and it was ok and not really the satirical docudrama that some reviews have indicated.

Perhaps I have too much #45 news overload to see the satire. That said, the cast is amazing with a pretty good script. Christian Bale once again bulked up with a huge gut like he had in American Hustle. That weight gain and weight loss afterwards can't be healthy. His portrayal of Cheney is quite convincing.

Ben is Back: This as a well acted drama that as incredible. It was balanced and avoided cliches, for a harrowing look at family, loyalty, and drug addiction.

The Mule: Its entertaining with solid performances, but it tries to hit the family theme a little too hard. Maybe a rental or Netflix wait, or cheap tuesday viewing.

Shoplifters: Japanese drama explores a poor family taking in an abused girl and how they make do with the occasional swiping of instant noodles and snacks. Its a very human look at connections, its a tad long but if you want something different check it out.

All of these are playing at International Village

Bohemian Rhapsody:

the story revolves around the British rock band Queen and its flamboyant
lead singer Freddie Mercury (played by Rami Malek).
the resemblance is uncanny especially the performance of the historic concert event
Live Aid.

some interesting insight to other band members lives had they not formed the band.
Brian May an astrophysicist
Roger Taylor a dentist
John Deacon an electronic wizard

I liked some of the lighter moments such as when the band
was trying to convince a record exec what the album
A Night At The Opera is all about. Freddie controlled the meeting with
a hissy fit.

anyone who appreciates the band Queen will like this movie.
I was lucky enough to see the band w FM 1980–Pacific Coliseum.
definitely a unique voice in the history of rock. RIP Freddie!

I watched Newness on Netflix. It's about two people serial dating with Tinder, and then sticking it out by having a completely honest relationship. She says "If you're always honest with me, I'll never leave you." This gets tested. The Spanish actress lead is strong. I liked it.

I'm becoming a bit of a movie addict this year and I'm suddenly super into horror. Here are some of my favourites of recent of all genres.

HEREDITARY!!!!
Holy shit is this my favourite movie? I want to see a million more movies exactly like this.

THE VISIT
Yes, I loved it. The way grandma moves is the scariest thing ever. MORE!

MID90s
WEIRD but enjoyable. There is a character named Fuck Shit. I feel like I grew up with some of these boys.

FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY
I went to see this in the theatre for some reason (OK IT WAS A DATE) and it was actually really funny

WANDERLUST
I like Jen Aniston because other celebrities always talk about how she's the nicest person ever, lol. This movie was surprisingly hilarious.

SPLIT and GLASS
These are fucking good just watch them especially Split.

OKJA
OMG how did I miss this it's so cute its so heartwarming I'm in love with Okja!

THE BREAKER UPPERERS
It's fucking hilarious; it's about friendship; I fucking love it.

IMO, Hereditary is one of the finest horror films ever made. Recent horror movies rely on jump scares and gore to distract the audience from weak characters and sub standard plots. Toni Collette really carried the movie - easily one of the best performances of 2018.

If you want sublime horror in the vein of Hereditary, like a slow creeping dread than I recommend The Terror. Its on AMC, it takes place in 1845 during a naval trip to find the Northwest Passage. However the two boats and crew of 130 find a LOT of challenges. And I'm going to leave it at that.

Triple Frontier on Netflix

Another made for Netflix production.

Former Special Forces group go to South America to rob a cartel boss.

A bit formulatic using parts of Narcos vs DEA type of movie. Good action though and a decent script.

Still it's pretty good and worth a view.

Haven't watched the first season, but the second is currently filming in Surrey. Set in a South Pacific Japanese internment camp during WWll.

Visuals are nice, Nicole Kidman looks lovely, Jason looks hunky but that's all it has going for it. Plot, writing are just utter shite. If you watch it, do yourself a favor and watch it while you're mowing the lawn.

I saw it. I wasn't disappointed. In some ways the plot feels like an average Doctor Who episode, but it was entertainingly done. I probably felt roughly the same about it as Iron Man 2, and I'm happy I'm now up on the character so I can appreciate Endgame more.

I can't help but feel the same plot got recycled three different ways recently but to explain that comment would be a spoiler.

Solid movie, I like the different twists and challenges they threw in. Showed that soldiers do have conscious vs just blood thirsty killers. The camaraderie and brotherhood aspect was well drawn out. Ive heard others refer to it as a bromance movie . Worth watching.
