These companies are likely losing money. Many of the people I know under 35 don't even have cable anymore. They just use Netflix or Apple TV. I'm the same. I'd figure they must not have the viewers they had and they presumably make money selling commercials? Less eyeballs means less money. I'd imagine that viewership is down too because of people's busy lives. Kind of the same as newspapers. I was reading the Georgia Strait this weekend when I was eating in Chinatown. I haven't read it for years but holy shit it's TINY. New media must be killing that stuff.

most of that is bullshit being fed to you from the media themselves, they want subsidies

Postmedia, buying the local auto traders (sun) was bad business, as was borrowing from a hedge fund, not to mention, not adapting to reality, their virtual monopoly was gone
gov't never should have let it happen

watching Bill Maher last week, on the subject in the states, NBC, CBS, ABC, they have become a joke, according to him, the news down there never really made money, it was subsidized by the other parts of the schedule, even now he says the revenue from the news division is 1-4% of their business

Canada isn't much different, look at the pathetic CBC, the billion they get every yr is going to executive salaries, not actual programming, you think CTV ain't making money overall? Bell's broke? Global? sure the jews from winnipeg did their best to run it and the newspapers into the ground, the shaw's are raping it for their own benefit now, but losing money, fuck that, creative accounting, none of these are simple stand alone TV stations or news programs

loss leaders, part of a good business

media were allowed to merge, swallow each other, the public didn't benefit, you never do when competition is reduced

the same shit is on the 3 networks, the 2 papers in most towns

and like Maher pointed out, look at the superficial shit they are passing off as "NEWS" you wonder why they don't get ratings? They're pandering to the lowest of low

it's become like entertainment tonight shit, like the crap being peddled on Facebook/twitter, the mundane musing of the common idiot, it isn't news, it hasn't been for at least a decade now

it's pathetic

look at how they keep announcing that you might be offended by what they are about to show/say? Adults need to be warned about life? really?

new media isn't killing it

a lack of adults, without character, ethics, balls, spines, at the table in the "so called" newsrooms, is the problem

I didn't draw my conclusion from what the media told me, I drew it from what I see in the general public. A growing swath of people don't have cable & don't watch the news. And people want everything on demand, that's why Netflix is doing so well. This is both a technical & generational divide. The tech has enabled tech savvy folks (which is most people under 35) to get their news on demand and through different platforms. It's like classic cars. The baby boomer generation was interested in cars; millennial's less so. They're pretty content to have a smaller SUV or compact car. I don't imagine in 30 years they'll be rebuilding a Toyota Camry in their garage.

I am not a fan of pandering to the lowest of the low, but I don't think that's the problem McDonalds is the lowest of the low. Tim Hortons is the lowest of the low. Walmart is close to the bottom. They're all flourishing. The news at 6 is a think of the past because of generational changes. I'm smack dab in between the boomers and the Millennials. When I was 21 I'd spend a Saturday night sitting in the back yard listening to radio. I've got great memories of that time. Today I don't own a radio except in my car. And I don't listen to the radio in the car either (though I like Roundhouse Radio). I get my music elsewhere. I've got choices now.

yes, cause you heard it, Donald hears stuff too :blabla:

and how many people do you know? 1000? lol

I heard the average person meets, maybe 10,000 in their lifetime, haha, pretty small sample

facts, who needs em

and everyone has a shot at becoming a millionaire in the US too, again, don't line up with facts

people aren't watching tv anymore now than they were before, including the news, people didn't have cable when I was growing up in the 70's 80's, some didn't have a phone, some still don't
they got their news from the moron they talked to then as well, now the morons are just doing it with the gossip on Facebook, (look 3 lines down) lol

some now don't have the internet either, shocking, I know

maybe it's on different platforms, but, Netflix has barely 35M US subscribers, it's estimated there are over 100 million homes with at least one tv there

same bullshit, different pile

people didn't watch the news in droves before or read the paper on a daily basis, just like most don't watch TV religiously or ever have

that's the reason shows with plots/story-lines don't do well with the moronic masses, it takes a commitment, an IQ big enough to follow along those complicated twists and turns, just like the news/staying informed does

Oprah was a huge success, she had about 10million watching her, out of what 300? look at the ratings, they're a huge success if they get a fraction of the pop, still the same for shows today, music and movies as well, it's BS spin

barely 10% of the population watches/ed TV on a regular basis before, still

the cord cutting, again, look at the actual numbers, not anywhere as dramatic as they like to spin it, in Canada, it's minor, last stat I saw, don't think it was even 1% loss

most people just added streaming/internet, long way to go before it's done

the actual numbers don't support it's demise, just the lack of ability to rape the public like they used to, it's just switching over to data

they need to adapt, not subsidies, which is what all the bitching, specially in Canada is all aboot
