I am thinking of getting one. Anybody have it? If so how do you like it? Is it worth it to go for the extra memory?
Just wondering why you would choose one from Blackberry and not iPad? What do they have that the more established tablet doesn't have on it?

With any new technology, I like to wait for the second rev to come out so most of the bugs are worked out first.

Here is a comparison between the two - Ipad vs Playbook

Operating System -
Apple iPad runs on the Apple iOS. iOS is user-friendly and that is the reason behind its popularity.

BlackBerry Playbook runs on BB Tablet OS. BlackBerry Tablet OS is a new QNX-based OS which was announced by BlackBerry on 27th September 2010. QNX Software Systems developed this OS specially for the Playbook.

You can also read the comparison between Apple iOS and Google Android here -

Apple iOS vs. Google Android – Which one is better?

Display -
Apple iPad has a 9.7-inch screen. Resolution – 1024 x 768.

BlackBerry has a 7-inch screen. Resolution – 1024 x 600.

Processor/RAM/Graphics -
Apple iPad sports Apple A4 (ARMv7) – 1GHz Processor, 256 MB RAM and PowerVR SGX 535 Graphics.

BlackBerry boasts dual-core Corex A9 – 1GHz Processor and 1 GB RAM. There is no information about the graphics yet.

Camera -
Apple iPad doesn’t come with any built-in camera.

BlackBerry comes with a 5 MP rear camera and a 3 MP front-facing camera.

Others -
Apple iPad offers bluetooth as the connectivity option, BlackBerry Playbook offers the same. For detailed features of these tablets, you can read the following posts -

Apple iPad – Best Features and Missing Features
PlayBook – BlackBerry Tablet Introduced

Conclusion -
Do I need to say it? Of course you can see that BlackBerry Playbook is the tablet of today and it has got far better features than the Apple iPad.

Playbook is better than iPad in almost all the aspects. The only reason why people choose iPad could be the iOS user interface, but BlackBerry’s new Tablet OS will soon be attracting many more geeks. BlackBerry Playbook has got better hardware and Apple iPad has got a better OS and interface, so if you’re the one who wants a better hardware then Playbook is for you else you can choose the iPad itself.

iPad 2 has two cameras built in to it now. Your eval is based upon the original iPad.

You also fail to note that the iPad has thousands of apps already and BB is starting from a few select ones now.

BTW I have a Mac and an iPad (original) but use a Motorola Atrix 4G Android phone. :D Not totally sold on Apple but close to it.

However, the PlayBook will run Android Apps - which is good and bad: good since there are/will be a ton to choose from, bad since some can be pretty poor in quality. If you have a Blackberry as a phone, then I think it's a natural to get the PlayBook. Coupled together, there are a lot more functions on the PlayBook. Note the PlayBook is WiFi enabled but there is no 3G/4G. The PlayBook will partner with your phone to access that data portion (3G/4G) of the cell network if WiFi is not available.

Now that is a nice feature!

I have tethered my Atrix with my MacBook and the need for a tablet has gone away completely.

Tablets are the next toy everyone is going to get. I would wait till the Samsung Galaxy 8.9, 10.1 arrives next month before getting anything. I like the 8.9 that 10.1 is a bear to hold its bigger than Ipad2.

I just got the playbook, partially cause I can get it cheaper from work, just RIM products.
It works well with the torch. I have a 6gb data plan for the phone, so this just uses that.
I have never come close to 1gb a month.

Dont think I'd both paying more for the more memory, unless you know you will use it.
Its a nice size too, fits in a jacket pocket

How about the Motorola Xoom, from the articles I have read, they say it's the best tablet on the market, Ipad 2 was developed to compete with it, android based. Anyone have any opinions on it

The ability to run Flash quickly comes to mind!

I'm still debating myself which way to go.

I'd wait for the new Samsung tablets, but if you gotta have one now get an iPad 2. Blackberry doesn't have anywhere near the dev support and the apps available are pretty limited. Long term you'll probably end up wishing you got an iPad 2 or Samsung tablet.

Lack of flash is a pain in the ass. Why the hell won't Apple and Adobe kiss and make up :D ?

I find the Playbook commercial amusing, but I wonder does anyone know what the battery life is when flash is in use on these things? It's already pretty processor intensive on Windows and Mac, I can't imagine it being that much nicer on any tablet?

I agree it's nice to have, but for me, not really a deciding factor. I don't really visit any sites that use flash apart from Youtube, and the odd game here and there.

It's too bad HTML5 is taking so long to get anywhere because that'll definitely help rid the majority of Flash use... I'm hoping a year or 2.... Fingers crossed. hah.

My understanding is you have to tether a Blackberry to your Playbook in order to get email. What kind of Blackberry doesn't come with BB email inherently available? Sounds cumbersome and silly. If you don't want an iPad 2, I would wait for an updated version of the Playbook, one that is "complete", ie. has email access built-in so you don't have to hook it up to your Blackberry just to send an email. Ridiculous. RIM is the company that DEFINES mobile email, and the BB is a much better email tool than the iPhone (I have both - iPhone for myself and a Curve for work). They failed by not having inherent email in the Playbook. Wait for the updated version, which is surely inevitable.

To the OP....which ever lil electronic doodad you opt for I suggest you buy it from DHGate.com.....ALL of the tablets mentioned in this thread are made in China and if you think otherwise go to any establishment and take a look at one....as in take it apart as much as you can...eventually you will find the words "Made in China"

Why pay $400+ for something when you can pay less than $100 for the exact same thing made by the same supplier.

I am not into tech gadgets and have no opinion of the superiority of one over the other....I am merely advocating for people to cut out the profiteering that companies like Apple & Rim force upon us as consumers.

these tablets are just another look at me device. like look at me i have a fancy phone. now look at me i have an ipad or playbook. for $700 you can a get a top tier laptop that crushes these things.

even telus latest iphone commercials are clearly based on this look at me philosophy. the "if you don't have have, an iphone, well you don't have an iphone" schtick, basically insinuating if you don't have an iphone your not as good as someone who does.
