Sigh,my espresso machine just failed, rather explosively in fact. Now I need a new machine. Does anyone have suggestions? I am looking for more of an automatic machine where all I have to do is load the machine up, press a button and not spend a fortune on it.

Thanks I did think about getting a capsule system but I drink a lot of coffee. I mean a lot, it may end up being cheaper buying from starbucks :p. My budget is about $1200 at most, i would prefer around the $500-600 range.

I have owned a few in the $300 range and they go tits up in 2 or so years. Never enough pump pressure from them anyways.

After a lot of consideration, I recommend the Nuova Simonelli brand. It will set you back $1200 if you get one now. They are regularly $1500.

One closer to your price point ($715) that I looked at is the Rancilio Silva Pro. It is highly rated on some of the espresso blogs. Not sure how credible these blogs are and if there is some kickback etc.

I replaced my old machine with a Nespresso which uses capsules. I think it's $6 for 10 capsules. Not a lot compared to the $5 Starbucks latte.

I have a Saeco and i Love it. cost about 900 but worth it and no cartrige refills need. Put what ever coffee beans you want
+1 on the Saeco. I have one and love it, lasted 8 years so far. This is the brand that Starbucks used to sell (maybe they still do). In Vancouver ECM sell them but there's also a Saeco store on the same corner (1st and Boundary) - parts are a heck of a lot cheaper at the Saeco store vs ECM....

Another vote for the nespresso...it just works and tastes pretty great.

Other than that, at work we have a plumbed in Saeco machine that is great, but runs over $2k.

Where do you get the best price for the capsules. I didn't have to order it yet.
I have only order from William Sonoma.

Nespresso makes a decent cup of espresso (good crema) BUT

-capsules are wasteful & in some cases not recyclable

-must buy from nestle's limited options vs huge selection of local suppliers/roasters

-coffee isn't shade grown/fair trade/organic etc and certainly isn't fresh (roasted beans should be consumed within 1 week)

-and the kicker, nespresso coffee is 3x more expensive (nespresso 60 cents/capsule vs 20 cents for real coffee based on $13/454 grams, 7 grams shot) so, after 1 yr if you go through 1 lb of coffee/mth your mystery multinational brew will have cost you over $300 more, $600 + if you have a 2 lb/mth habit and so on

Do it italian style and get a moka! Cheap, reliable and despite my penchant for expensive toys, watching (and thinking about) a scantily clad breakfast date deftly display his or her skills with stovetop espresso is sexy foreplay.

Most of the machines mentioned except the Nespresso can handle 'pods' and fine ground coffee.

I get two five pound bags per month from an Italian roaster in town.

I love my coffee :thumb:

Thanks for the info I ended up picking up a cuisinart k-cup system from Sears and it is nice. Multiple brewing sizes, an iced tea/coffee function, comes with a k-cup to use your own coffee and $60 off the regular price.

I took a pass on the nespresso, as I wanted to use my own coffee occasionally.I would have gone for a sedeco if sears hadn't had the sale on the cuisinart k-cup.

Thanks all for the info and the help.
