Would you buy an electric car?

Not unless they can make an electric truck that can give me the same range, towing capacity and be cheaper to run.

That's exactly right. The day may come, but it isn't here yet and probably won't be for some years.

something to add which might effect the future of electric

china is embarking on zero emission vehicle initiative to combat their dependency on oil imports and of course pollution

this strategy is basically leapfrogging over catalytic converter requirements which are now law in china but not enforced at a provincial level adequately enough yet

if successful on the technology and manufacturing side, they will have unrestricted use for electric vehicles plus reserved parking whereas gas vehicles, odd number license plates will drive on certain days and even number license plates on the other days (already implemented in certain cities) of course the rich will just buy two cars, one with even, one with odd number license plates

this level of market adoption if successful with have lower cost electric vehicles coming into our markets due to the large scale adoption in china, assuming their manufacturing capacity can handle exports

also, the western car makers who have plants in china will be coming out with their models as well

lot of ifs in terms of future with this but possible game changer

With Electric Cars, one only has to look at the effect of the Prius on the Taxi Industry. Public Transportation, be it Taxis or Buses has the advantage of having a Terminal where the vehicles are fueled, maintained and, most important, start and end their working shifts. The Taxi Industry adopted the Toyota Prius in a big way.

I expect the same thing to happen when Tesla or another company gets it right with an Electric Car. It's a combination of Price, Range, Reliability and Comfort. If the vehicle is missing any of the metrics, it won't be adopted for wide spread use.

I believe in my opinion....the prohibitive cost of buying an electric vehicle.... and then the cost of maintenance on the battery packs.... once they are done ....doesn't make any financial sense.... may sound great for environmental issues... but with all the taxes that are used upon us to begin with ...eco fees ... environmental levies. ...and so on... it never stop. ...
When they can start designing roads that contain power which cars can simply go on and not have to worry about going somewhere and not have to worry if you can come back ..... electric cars will only be a novelty for those whom can afford it....
They had electric cars in the past.... and they ditched them.... they were efficient ... low maintenance ...but somebody somewhere decided they should disappear.....
When they install contact plates on the roads .... and cars are driving on continues power..... I'm going to start thinking about it.... until then I will continue enjoying my fossil fuel vehicles.....
And if that happens...and all vehicles become electric.... then we will have only 1 means of travelling and we will be at the mercy of electric power companies.. issues crossing provincial borders and country borders... we I'll need prepaid cards for power where ever we want to drive ......
Electric cars will only and always be a second alternative to fuel..... until someone can come up with a source of energy that will not have to rely on anyone to use it...

I'm in the energy business and electric won't become mainstream until fuel cell technology improves. Electricity is just too expensive to generate, short of a disruptive breakthrough like fusion.

The cheaper oil stays the less the incentive to substitute ( and where's your government gonna get all their gas tax money from ?)

Give it another few years my dear and it will become mainstream.
It's already here, for example with the Tesla that comes to you from its parking spot. Or with the Google cars in the San Francisco bay area, which will probably be available to the public in 2020... Fun!

Look left. Way left.
Friend just dropped $3k on battery for his Prius after 10 years and 280k. Didn't bother him as the car has so reliable and efficient that he considers it OK. He knew it would happen eventually

I'd buy a Tesla in a Manhattan-minute... if I could afford one. Beautiful inside & out, plenty of gadgetry to play with. For commuting where I live and short trips, it'd be perfect.

I would always miss manual transmissions, tho. Europe and Singapore does it right - learn to drive stick, then move on auto

If only they came up with a manual-transmission electric car.... haha

Ahh Soo, what Cami and Aellyn need are Yellow Cab Credit Cards and the Yellow Cab app. Downtown Vancouver is a mess, especially parking, I use Taxis.

waiting on the Tesla Model 3... the company's mass market electric. They're trying to price it at around 35k, which, imo, is almost affordable.... especially if one can take advantage of rebates and incentive programs.
hopefully by then, more super charging stations will be around and it won't take 2-3 hours to charge up a battery after driving it's range.

That rebate or grant is not around indefinitely, if you're gonna get a grant/rebate better apply now.
I've been looking at the Volt or Prius, might pull the trigger on a used on this year.

European cities are full of e-cars especially Renault Twizzy. ( lineup of ecars from Renault is here if you want to have a look https://group.renault.com/en/company-vehicles/discover/renault-electric-vehicles/ )
I know, distances in Europe are a bitt different then what we have here..... but I would love to have Twizzy as my second car.
There were plans to start selling Twizzy in Eastern Canada, but I'm not sure what is the current story on it.
