How can you tell when you are in a room, restroom, motel etc. with a mirror or a 2-way glass?

Here’s how: I thought it was quite interesting! And I know in about 30 seconds you’re going to do what I did and find the nearest mirror.

Do you know how to determine if a mirror is 2-way or not? A policewoman who travels all over the US and gives seminars and techniques for businesswomen passed this on…
.

When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms, etc., how many of you know for sure that the seemingly ordinary mirror hanging on the wall is a real mirror, or actually a 2-way mirror (i.e., they can see you, but you can’t see them)? There have been many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in female changing rooms . It is very difficult to positively identify the surface by looking at it.

So, how do we determine with any amount of certainty what type of mirror we are looking at?

TWO WAY GLASS IMAGE MIRROR IMAGE

Just conduct this simple test: Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface and if there is a GAP between your fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is GENUINE mirror. However, if your fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image of your nail, then BEWARE! IT IS A 2-WAY MIRROR!

“No Space, Leave the Place” So remember, every time you see a mirror, do the “fingernail test.” It doesn’t cost you anything.

REMEMBER. No Space, Leave the Place:

No. Just like the "poisonous onions" thread you made, this is an internet urban legend a.k.a Forward From Grandma. It's not true.

Triangulate your sources, girl! :p

It's not entirely false, if your fingernail does touch it cannot be a standard mirror as no standard mirrors are produced in a way that would create that effect. The silvering on two way glass however could be on the front or back of the glass depending on which side you are on. If it happens to be on the side you were on when you did the "fingernail test" and the silvered side never had a second sheet of clear glass overtop to protect it, the test would be valid.

So yeah, "no space leave the place" I guess... but dont believe it's a standard mirror just because of the space, the costs of defeating your test are minimal (or zero if you just mounted the glass to have the silvering facing the observation room), and actually increase the lifespan of the glass, especially in a dressing room situation where metal bits might hit the silvering and scratch it, wrecking the mirror.

I think it's "There's no place like home" three times while clicking your heels together.

Although maybe I should have used an Alice in Wonderland joke with the through the looking glass motif and all.

Just FYI

http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/mirror.asp

Wasn't totally false but some better ways to detect two-way mirrors.
According to the folks in Mirropane's technical support group, you can use these factors to your advantage by pressing your eyes up against the mirror and cupping your hands around them (to block out the light from the room you're in): if you're truly dealing with a transparent mirror, you should be able to see at least a little something of the open area behind it. Also, rapping on the mirror should provide an aural clue: ordinary mirrors have backings and are usually placed against walls, so rapping on them will generally produce dull thuds; transparent mirrors are set into walls with open areas behind them, so rapping on them should produce much more open, hollow sounds. These methods of detection are more reliable than the fingernail test and should be preferred to taking a chance on getting arrested for property damage after tossing a chair through a perfectly normal mirror misjudged via less accurate means.

Having a gap does not prove that it is a standard mirror.

Here's an experiment for you: Take another first surface reflective object, say a clean butter knife. Do the fingernail test, your fingernail will touch. Now, hold that against a peice of glass, (an empty glass or something) and do the test again... your fingernail will not touch.

However, if that were the first surface side of a two way mirror you'd still see through it if there was a proper light differential.

Knocking on the glass would work, if there was a room behind. It doesnt work if its a large mirror mounted against the wall with only a small hole, unless you lucked out and knocked on the hole. Also wouldent work if a camera was mounted in the hole.

If you held a super bright flashlight up to the glass so that the light dident reflect back into the room you were in, it would likely light up the other room and the glass would look like normal tinted glass.

The question is who would go to all the trouble of installing all this then sitting in a dark room waiting to see girls undress... 13 year old boys I guess, or is there some sort of alternate reality out there where a naked girl is hard to come by? Scratch that, I'm sure theres enough creepy people out there that it's worth being worried.

If you've ever seen a 2 way mirror you'd know it they only really work well if the lights are really bright on the mirror side and really dim on the obsevation side otherwise you can see thru

Installing two way mirrors into hotel rooms would be expensive and hard to do on the sly. What has happened in the past, especially with those motels which had a service corridor running behind the rooms was the staff would cut a small hole in the wall behind the mirror and then scrape the reflective coating off of the back of the mirror for a peep hole. So if your checking the mirror, you should be looking for a dark non-reflective spot, usually toward the side or corner where it would be less obvious. On occasion this has been done between rooms by guests trying to check into the next room.
