There was an article this morning in the Vancouver Sun entitled "Increase in HPV-tied cancers 'disturbing': researchers."
http://www.vancouversun.com/health/...ign=Feed:+canwest/F229+(Vancouver+Sun+-+News)
The author quotes the team of researchers as saying "the increasing incidence of these HPV-related cancers has been attributed to changes in lifestyle-related risk factors, most notably sexual behaviour."
Michael Douglas famously suggested he developed throat cancer from the HPV virus by performing oral sex on women. Douglas later admitted that he in fact had tongue cancer but lied about it in order to protect his career. (Treatment for tongue cancer may require disfiguring surgery which he apparently did not need.) Douglas also admitted that the cause of his cancer could also have been his heavy drinking and smoking. (He is now clear of the cancer.)
I enjoy DATY but this article has given me second thoughts about going down on a woman. The CDC website notes that cancer often takes years, even decades, to develop after a person gets HPV, and there is no way to know which people who have HPV will develop cancer or other health problems. Most people's immune systems, however, can fight off HPV.
While there is always some sort of risk associated with any sexual activity, would it be an overreaction to curtail may love of DATY altogether? (Or maybe I should use a dental dam.)
Will the risk of HPV-related cancers stop you from doing DATY?
