You should meet some actual Ukrainians.
I met some at night school in the 90s and 2000s. There are lots of Ukrainian refugees in the hotels around where I work. I work with lots of them, have a few in my neighbourhood, and many have been back to Ukraine in the last few years.
Funny that not a single one of them has ever said they want to be closer to Russia.
NOT ONE!
Every one of them supports the fight against invading Russians.
I agree. But on the other hand the Russians that are not in Russia, still support Russia. This is a problem for the western world. Even with modern access to western media, they still persist on that Russia can't do no wrong.
Look its great that people look at all sides of the issue, but the big one is atomic weapons. And that should scare the shit out of all of you.... It doesn't matter who uses them first. In the end its all a wasteland of radioactive dust, and nuclear winter for decades to come. No sunlight, no crops, no food to eat. Guess you fuckers all don't have fallout bunkers.... (some bright thoughts for the day!!)

Atomic weapons have been around for more than 50 years, if someone uses them so be it not going to hide in the closet, life goes on.

Well Canada needs to spend more on defence. It needs to swing its own weight around. Canada needs newer equipment and getting younger people into the military.
No we don't.

We have a very strong friend to our south who has a vested interest in artic and they will make sure Canada doesn't fall. We also have rest of NATO. No need to spend more money on defense equipment than the bare minimum of 2% that's required as per NATO.

I was in Pattaya, Thailand last month. Talk about Russians, everywhere, literally hundreds of thousands in Thailand, they even have their own neighbourhoods now. And they were supporting the war. Funny, though, all those healthy young supporters didn't want to die for Putin. The Russian mind set is pretty fucked up. Even the Thais are beginning to dislike them and that takes some doing.

Do I know Russians? I lived in Russia for 2 years in a desolate part of Siberia. I always joke that my boss sent me to a gulag (actually it was a former gulag region!). Russian lives there are misery but somehow they want to believe that they are suffering for a better, greater Russia prevented by the West not by their own ghoulish oligarchs and toxic leadership. It is all pretty sad. Infuriates me!

Almost all the Russians conscripted are from non-Russian ethnic groups, many from the far eastern regions. Not many from Moscow area. It’s easy to support a war you aren’t going to fight in.

It reminds me of being in our army in the 70s when it seemed like everyone was from Newfoundland. Joining was a good way off the rock, they said. They weren’t conscripted though.

Most of the Russians in Pattaya are from east of the Urals as those to the West usually go to Cyprus and Turkey. The men I saw were predominantly ethnic Russian despite coming from the east side of the country.

The only reason is Canada is a buffer zone. A resource country. A place for the radioactive waste of ICBM from Russia to fall on... The one thing i like about america is that US policy of "talk softy and carry a big stick" .

The reality is the CAF is shorthanded. Canada does not spend 2% of its GNP, its more around 1.4%. The CAF has a serious lack of modern equipment (in any type of quality), with little of no depth of reserve equipment. What money they do spend also includes salary for the members of the CAF. The CAF uses CF18 bought 30 years ago (effectively at the end of their lives, replacing 138 with 88 new planes that aren't here yet.). The modern ships have big teething problems, due to bad management (overall because the government wanted cheaper, so you get less reliable shit).
Major purchases for equipment like tanks, ships, artillery, trucks, are usually budgeted by the Canadian Parliament, not the existing budget for the CAF. Canadian governments have basically killed the CAF with budget cuts and lack of response for demand for new equipment, which is very badly needed. All the material stuff the CAF is getting now, was proposed back in the 1990s, 25 years too fucken late. During the 90's the Government purchased vehicles from western star trucks (italian design), which were later found to be defective for off road work. Political decision to buy the worst vehicle, but it supplied/helped Cdn manufacturing. Effectively the Cdn Governments have severely curtailed the abilities of the CAF to respond to crisis situations. In international politics Canada does not have a big stick... just wimpy politicians.

As for depending on the US to fight for Canada, they have their own problems and Canada is at the bottom of the list. Canadians needs to have to stand on their own 2 feet and not be propped up by the US. I know most people are being Americanized by TV, and American football etc, but you still are Canadians. The idea that anybody should mention that we should just let the USA take care of our defenses, and northern sovereignty in the Arctic, shows how brainwashed some people are.

Does your neighbour ever cut your lawn? Why would you let him cut your lawn? Cause nothing comes for free. There is a price attached.

I can only think that members of the CAF are wishing the Canadian goverment would spend as much money for procurement for the CAF as we are spending/sending to the Ukraine.

The support for the Ukraine is just.

Putin and his buddies in the People's Republic of China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea are merciless animals.

If our economy was as big as USA then sure go for it - spend on whatever weapons you need. But our economy isn't that big and there are other bigger issues we have than worrying about defense. Our people are dying due to overdoses, homelessness is up, Healthcare system is shit, crime is up, housing prices are out of control, food prices and inflation is rampant.. we need money to fix those things. We aren't at war and don't have a direct threat to be in a conflict anytime soon so no point in spending that money for defense.

Even if we were to spend on weapons, we should be developing them in our country to make our manufacturing, R&D stronger and create jobs for our people.

Also a defense budget includes salaries you pay and not just equipment.

And it's nothing about being Americanized or not. It's just being wise and taking advanced of a superpower friendly nation to our south

Let me type this slower, so you can read it slower and not miss any points..... (Sorry I had to say it, because I have already said it above)

The defense budget includes salaries, and not major equipment purchases (tanks, ships, airplanes, helicopters), as these are big expenses. This has to go through Parliament.

Assuming regular typing speed...

The stuff/equipment Canada is giving Ukraine comes from Canadian stock (what is already brought). Know how cheap governments are, the CAF won't be reimbursed for the equipment given to Ukraine, leaving the CAF waiting for reimbursement sometime in some future budget.

Canada has yet to reach that 2% limit as its around 1.4%.

This idea of leaching shit/protection from the USA, really needs to stop. When you depend on a country to look out for your best interests and it dosen't. There is gonna be big fucken problems. Relying on the US for Canadian Sovereignty, will put Canadians into a long lasting sleep... Next thing you know you are drafted to go fight a war in Taiwan.... Canadians need to stand up and fight for themselves and pay their fair share.

Again its not wise to give away your sovereignty.

I would compare it to that guy that drinks the beer brought by others and when its his own turn to buy a "round" is nowhere to be found. It can happen once, or twice, but by the third time; that guy get the cold shoulder, and when he comes in again, every one just buys his own drinks untill he leaves....

I am in the international security contractor business and have deployed numerous times to Afghanistan, Iraq as well as Ukraine. I also have many business associates inside Russia and Ukraine. Do not believe fake news, Putin could quickly wipe Ukraine off the map, but he is attempting to minimize Russian and Ukrainian casualties. The US and NATO are causing more harm than good by supporting Ukraine. Based on my experience, I do not believe Putin is trying to reestablish the iron curtain. Although it is not widely reported in the media, the Ukrainian government has been persecuting thousands of Russian citizens living in Ukraine. Those Russian citizens are not allowed to speak Russian, celebrate Russian holidays or worship the way they choose. President Reagan promised Gorbachev that NATO would not expand after the iron curtain came down. That promise was broken many times, and if Russia established a colony in Mexico, or Canada, the United States would not stand for it. Remember, there are two sides to every story and do not believe everything your government tells you.

Ukrainian author and former Soviet soldger Alexandr Solzhenitsyn wrote in "The Gulag Archipelago" that Khazarian Bolsheviks gladly murdered 66 million white Christian Russians under Stalin in a hurry to institute agricultural reforms in Ukraine. Eight million hereditary petite small farmers starved in Ukraine and remainder in gulag prison work camps.

I hear the exact opposite of what you claim, and I hear it from:
1:Canadian civilians who have been there.
2:Canadian military who have been there.
3:Ukrainian refugees living here.

The argument you make for Putin invading to protect Russian citizens in a foreign country is the same argument Hitler made when he invaded the Sudetenland to protect ethnic Germans.
Why would I expect my government to invade a sovereign nation to protect my “right” to violate that nation’s laws? Those Russian citizens could leave anytime.

Im not engaging you further.

I have been there several times over the past 6 months…..hired by Ukraine. Think about how you, after living in a country for your entire life, could just move. Go smoke your dope and put your head in a hole…..I’m not engaging you further!

Again we have different thoughts about where taxpayer money should be used. We are on extreme ends of the spectrum here and thats alright. We get to have our own opinions in this free country. I do not and will never support defense spending. Canada does not have a direct threat and chances of a war breaking out in North American soil is pretty low. The next war frontier if it ever happens is going to be Asia/Indo-pacific region.

Lots of countries are surviving being dependent on other countries for defense support. Nothing wrong with that.

Let's take care of our people and spend money on Healthcare, education and infrastructure first as again chances of us getting involved in a conflict is pretty low.

My son’s best friend joined the army 2 1/2 years ago. He was in Greenwood Nova Scotia and he was here at Christmas and and he said they were out of live ammunition for practising shooting because they sent it all to Ukraine. They are waiting for their new supplies.
