Can never figure it out but i see people clicking away on their blackberry all the time. I heard it's good for emails but i dont have many emails to write. Wondering why it's so popular?

Some people (like myself) don't like touchscreens. Plus Blackberry still is the go-to smartphone for the corporate world, which is pretty big.

Never owned one even though I like to strongly support Canadian made products.

The Corporate types in my biz all use them for their emails. Weird thing is their IT people lock out a number of functions like the web browser etc. WTF? Its like having a car with only 2 tires on it.

Friends that own them use the BBM service "a LOT". Seems they are constantly typing silly shit to each other. I take it BBM is a free service through RIM's servers and does not count as a Text message??

Personally I use an Android Motorola Atrix 4G. It does everything I need for my biz and personal life. ;)

I've bought a few BBs for the folks here at work and I despise setting them up. They seem very non-intuitive to me. Then again, now that I have a Windows phone, an iPhone and Android seem very awkward to me.

So...as each new BB comes out, the reviews usually say "If you have a BB, you'll love this phone", but they are never enough to draw a non BB user to use them.

I've had Berries for as long as I can remember. They are superior in emailing capabilities and as someone who does a lot of web surfing I can appreciate the fact that RIM makes a huge effort to compress data to keep my data useage low. I rarely go over 750MB and I'm on my berry 24/7. When I demoed a iPhone 4 earlier this year, doing less than I do on my berry I racked up 1.8GB of data!! Talk about a lot.

In the end it comes down to what do you as the end purchaser want in a device? Personally I could NOT live without BBM! :p

Also, corporately, the Berry isn't going to die any time soon. My work berry is a 9900 and my personal one is a 9810, so I'm happy...:)

I am also surprised how many Blackberry's I see out there, especially in the hands of kids. I used a Curve for several years for work switching to a Torch (9800) earlier this year and can honestly say the Torch is the worst phone I've ever owned.

I've recently switched to Android and find it to be far more work and life friendly then my Blackberry ever was.

We use them because when we got them 30 months ago they were state of the art. Now Rogers keeps fucking us out of our agreed upgrades. First the promise was in two years then 27 months now it's 30 months.

I read an article a few months back talking about that. Blackberries are huge with teenage girls, so much so that it is considered one of their strongest markets. BBM is the key. Girls love to text and they love the delivery/read notifications.

With Apple introducing iText or whatever it is called, you may see a shift, but another reason these girls love the BB is due to its physical keyboard. Many are pros are texting from within their pocket through touch alone.

I started out with an iPhone 3G from my friend that gave it to me, and I loved it. Everything was so simple you had to be brain dead to not know how to use it. Then when I traded NYE Deadmau5 tickets for a BB Torch 9800, I regret not just taking the money instead. The BB, although a very nice phone and far superior in terms of specs compared to my Iphone at the time, lacked personal fuctions IMO. the Apps just weren't there, the half decent ones that were free were just that, decent. Anything out of the ordinary that you would normally get out of Apply for free or next to nothing, cost an arm and a leg. It is an excellent phone when it comes to emailing compared to the iPhone, but that is all I can say. Now that I have an iPhone4, I dont ever plan on going back to BB. My next phone to try out would be an android phone, but not sure which one to try out since its so close to the iPhone(to some degree).

I think it just has to do with personal preference. I visited a cousin in London and her 2 older sons had phones and one preferred the blackberry and the other the IPhone. I have an Android 3G and I like it ok but I must admit the touchscreen can be a little frustrating at times.

Tried the new blackberry bold 9900 today at futureshop. The touchscreen & keyboard made the phone very appealing. Thought this phone was easier to use than iphone 4. But just the hefty price tag of 550.00 or contract isnt that appealing

One girl told me the touchpad doesn't work well if you have long nails.

In the corporate world it is so easy for IT to administer user rights and security using Blackberry Enterprise Server, I don't see that changing anytime in the near future for large corporations.

Really improves their txt while driving too. WAY less spelling errors.

PS: I'm writing this on a BB... Some web browsing is less than ideal, and the screen is a little small for porn, but I couldn't live without mine...
And, like Microsoft and PC, it is a true work/corporate device, rather than an ultra cool, chic, personal device. People who plead my work to buy them i-phones and i-pads remind me of Linux fans. The fact that your cool gadget is "easier" and "more intuitive" doesn't matter. More corporate IT professionals can work with the corporate standard, and Apple doesn't cater to the "corporate" world. RIM does. Or did, and they're coasting on the legacy... And by "corporate", I mean companies of 100's of users. So don't bother with the "I run a graphics Design shop with 12 employees and we are all on i-phones and i-Macs" replies. Of course you are. And you drink Venti Hazelnut Lattes from Starbucks. When you can stomach black, day old coffee, you will graduate to BlackBerry, PC, Windows, and the cursing will begin.

Whew. Got on a bit of a roll there. Can you imagine typing that little rant on a touch screen?

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the ONE true thing that separates Crackberries from all others!

SECURITY!
And we have a winner! Most people have no idea how easy it is to hack an iPhone, or Android phone, but a BlackBerry is about as secure as you can hope for. I have the maximum level of encryption on my BB, as well as an auto-lock that requires the password after being idle for just five minutes. It's amazing how much info people have on their phones, and don't realize how vulnerable they could be if the wrong people got ahold of it (and that includes cops as well).

Personally, I love my Torch 9800, I do most of my browsing on my laptop anyways, and I use my BB for communication more than I use it for entertainment. Someone once told me that a BlackBerry is a tool, while an iPhone is a toy. I think that's a pretty accurate comparison. ;)
